A hedge of tuja and other conifers on a country plot

A hedge of tuja or juniper - a choice not from simple

It so happened that there are much more useful plants in nature than dangerous for living creatures. And thujas with junipers are no exception. If we talk about tuya, its main property is the improvement of air, it's a phytoncid tree. Perhaps it's all about essential oils that are contained in the needles and have antiseptic properties( along with many others). Although, essential oils of tuya, medicinal in small amounts, become overdosed with the poison. Juniper also has bactericidal quality, while juniper berries produce a slightly tart, but tasty and healing preserves. It is clear that both trees can equally well claim a place in your garden. However, why not choose these evergreens for hedges.

Both juniper and thuja in natural conditions can grow tall like columns of trees, on the same plot, on the contrary, cultural varieties are a dense spreading shrub. So, for example, a pencil tree( Virgin Juniper) grows up to 20 meters in height with a half meter thickness of the trunk, but the varieties of this same plant Hornibrookii and Repanda have a trunk up to 50 centimeters high with branches up to two meters in length. It is clear which variety is suitable for shading the site and which one - to make a dense and tall enough evergreen hedge of juniper. As for tuya, the most successful type of planting and landscaping is the Thuja occidentalis L., or the western thuja. It is this plant that feels great, growing into impenetrable thickets, from which a hedge of tuja can be created.

A hedge of spruce and pine, we study monumental horticulture.

Spruce has about 50 species, pines two times more - more than 100 varieties. What sort to choose, so that the hedge from the needles does not turn into your patch of land into a dense forest, which supports the sky with tree trunks? As for the pine, you can not break your head for a long time, there are not only gigantic varieties, but also dwarf ones, there are intermediate variants that can fully meet your wishes. For example, if you need a hedge of pine mountain, choose Pumilio, stretching for 3 meters in height, Mungo up to two meters and Kobold - only one meter.

Spruce, being an equally noble tree, also reaches huge sizes, in particular, the common European spruce has a height of 50 meters, growing in a year by 50 centimeters. However, almost all species of this tree species grow in natural conditions for tens of meters. For the garden, there are specially designed decorative forms: a Balkan spruce of the Gnom variety( Gnom) up to one and a half meters. Excellent in the garden will look like a hedge of fir Ayan, more precisely, its garden form Aurera( Aurera), which has a stunningly beautiful golden needles. Very convenient for the formation of a low green fence is the dwarf Microphilla( Microphilla), the garden variety of the Engelman spruce, which resembles a sphere in the form of a crown. Another globular tree is the garden form of the Tien Shan, not otherwise than from a globe named Globosa. The ball reaches a diameter of 1.8 meters.

To make the spruce more magnificent, the buds should be removed from the tips of its branches in early spring. A hedge of conifers of any kind will grow well in breadth with an accurate lateral pruning, the main thing is not to touch the main branches.

Coniferous hedge, their planting and care for their care

Growing a cultivated form of pine or spruce from a seed on your site is impossible, because with this method of planting trees lose all their decorative properties .Therefore, it is best to purchase ready-made seedlings for gardening, under which dig holes depth of about 80 centimeters, for a pine can be up to a meter. The distance between the trees when planting, with the account of the growth of the crown, up to one and a half meters. For both breeds, drainage is needed at the bottom of the wells, which can be brick or gravel, which is broken to the size of a five-kopeck coin. The thickness of the drainage layer is 20 centimeters, the substrate is filled from above: turf ground, leaf mixture and sand. For spruce add from 100 to 150 grams of nitroammophoski, for pine enough 30-40 grams. In both cases, it is necessary to make sure that the root neck is at the level of the earth's surface, and then it only remains to observe that it does not fall off, or vice versa, if the soil has settled. In the first two years, the fir needs to be watered daily, especially in hot weather. Pines do not need watering, but in the same period it is necessary to bring to the roots daily up to 40 grams of complex mineral fertilizer, preferably with a liter of water.

Tuya on your site can be grown from seeds. It is enough to gather cones in any month of autumn and dry them, spreading them in a thin layer at a temperature of no higher than 7 degrees. Then the seeds are extracted, from which the largest ones are selected using a 6x6 centimeter screen. Those that have been selected, poured into gauze bags and on the first snow put on the ground so that the top of the snow mass was not less than 30 centimeters. With the onset of spring, seeds are sown on beds, up to 5 grams per running meter. Depth of landing is literally half a centimeter, it's not worth more. As a result of regular watering, up to 90% of seeds should ascend. If you do not forget to close the shoots from the sun's rays with special shields, you can transplant grown trees already in the fifth year. Juniper can also be grown from seeds, as well as from cuttings, in this it is similar to thuja. In general, to make a beautiful hedge of conifers, it should be formed at the beginning of planting. Seeds of juniper, for example, are planted at a distance of half a meter from each other, so account is taken of the splendor of their crown.

Having planted coniferous trees on your site, and providing them with proper care, you will give yourself and many future generations fresh air and a healthy microclimate.
