For the correct selection of radiators you need to know about their basic technical parameters. Otherwise, the result may not justify the expectations. Indeed, there are not so many important parameters for radiators, so even a layman can easily understand them.

Now people no longer need to hide or decorate the radiators, so to modern devices can become a worthy ornament of any interior...Radiators that are sold today may differ in color, size, material of manufacture and general style of execution, so it will not be difficult to choose the most suitable option.
Attention! Despite the fact that we are accustomed to batteries of light colors, the heat transfer of black devices is approximately ¼ higher solely due to coloring. Although the choice of color is better to focus yet on the design of the home and personal preferences.
In terms of shape, it must be streamlined. For security reasons, it is advisable to refuse sharp angles at all, especially if the children live in the house. Before buying, check out the strengths and weaknesses of each of the existing types of radiators to determine which is more suitable for a particular room. The first thing you should pay attention to is the working pressure of the instruments.
? Depending on the material, the radiators are divided into:
- cast iron;
- steel;
- aluminum;
- bimetallic( of alloys of two metals).
It is from the material that the above mentioned pressure, heat output, heat capacity, resistance to mechanical and chemical damage, as well as the operational period depend.
Also pay attention to the way of connection to the heating main. The connection can be lateral, lower and universal. It is characteristic that modern radiators provide all these methods of connection.
Attention! Very important and environmental friendliness of the material used in the manufacture of heating appliances. In the internal elements there should be no formaldehyde, also quality polymer spraying on the surface is also welcome.
Now more in detail about each material.
Characteristics of cast iron radiators
Such batteries are the most common and known to every option, since they are installed in most of the standard apartments. Agree, the old appliances made of cast iron can hardly be considered stylish and attractive. The new models look better, but in terms of aesthetic performance still significantly inferior to devices from other materials.
It is known that cast iron is very heavy. The batteries made of it weigh a lot, which can not but affect the complexity of transportation and installation.
Consider their basic advantages.
- Cast iron radiators are reliable and durable. They can last up to 40 years without repair, which can not be said for batteries made from other materials.
- Cast iron slowly cools down, although it also slowly heats up, and is also resistant to corrosion.
- This metal has a high heat capacity. Heating occurs by convection.
- Similar batteries can be operated even with a low-quality coolant containing impurities and suspensions.
- Cast-iron batteries are relatively cheap( except for design models from foreign manufacturers).
But there are cast iron and lacks of , among which:
- significant weight;
- slow heating;
- is unaesthetic.
Warning! Despite the abundance of more modern analogs, many prefer to install just cast-iron batteries, trusting what has been tested for decades.

Characteristics of steel radiators
These devices use low-carbon steel for the manufacture of these radiators. In order to protect the surface is covered with a special enamel. If the steel radiators are of good quality, then they have excellent performance parameters, among which:
- strength;
- reliability;
- resistance to corrosion;
- durability;
- resistance to various aggressive substances.
Such batteries can be tubular and panel.
Tubular devices
For their assembly, steel pipes with high-quality polymer coating are used. The maximum load the equipment can handle depends solely on the thickness of the pipe walls. It is desirable that the pipes are made of stainless steel.
The operating life of the tubular devices is much higher than that of the panel ones and is on the order of 30 years. It is possible to connect all the methods described above. Working pressure is 10-16 atmospheres, more detailed data should be specified in the product data sheet.
Panel devices
As you can judge from the name, such radiators are made in the form of panels. For this purpose a certain number of steel plates are connected to each other. Thanks to this assembly, a high heat capacity is achieved, with the thickness of each individual plate being negligible. In addition, panel radiators weigh a little and provide for the possibility of connection by all available means.
Attention! Before buying new heaters, look at how you connected the old ones. It is advisable that new batteries be connected the same way.
The cost of panel radiators is slightly higher than average, the working pressure is 10 atmospheres. According to experts, such units are better to use in autonomous heating systems. As for urban apartments, the use of such batteries is unacceptable because of the high pressure in the central system.

Characteristic of aluminum radiators
Heating devices made of aluminum are considered one of the most popular types of radiators. Aluminum is a light and ductile metal, therefore, the batteries made of it, weigh a little and are distinguished by increased heat output.
Devices consist of sections, each of which is a set of interconnected plates. Thanks to this, heat savings are also at a fairly high level.
extrusion radiator The advantages of like units are:
- fast heating;
- high heat capacity;
- light weight;
- affordable cost( especially when compared with bimetallic aggregates);
- wide model range.
However, after switching off the heating, these radiators cool down rather quickly. Among other deficiencies it is worth highlighting:
- instability to chemical influences( the problem can be solved by polymer coating on the inner surface);
- low strength;
- poor quality of the threaded connection in the upper valve for releasing air from the system.
Therefore, before buying, you must always inquire about the operating pressure of the heating system. The limiting pressure of a particular product should be looked at in the technical passport, because for different models it is different.
But nevertheless, aluminum is very suitable for manufacturing radiators, and its fusibility makes it possible to significantly expand the range. Today you can choose the battery that fits perfectly into the interior of the housing.

Characteristics of bimetallic batteries
The main difference between bimetallic radiators is the use of two different metals in the manufacturing process - steel to create a core and aluminum to assemble the case. Thanks to this rod is very durable. Another advantage of such products is a high working pressure, which can reach 50( !) Atmospheres. Moreover, the steel perfectly "cooperates" even with the water in which there are different admixtures, while aluminum quickly heats up and gives out a maximum of heat.
In short, the use of just two metals made it possible to obtain radiators that have the merits of each of them. Therefore, it is quite obvious that the cost of these devices is the highest among all possible options.
Attention! Bimetal batteries are mainly used for heating industrial and public facilities. In residential buildings they are rare because of the high cost.
The operating period is 20-25 years, which is quite normal.

As a conclusion
It is worth noting that any of the described types of batteries can be used for residential heating systems. Although the purchase of bimetallic instruments is often inexpedient, because the advantages they have almost the same as that of aluminum, and the cost while this is many times more. Therefore, let them better remain in industrial and public facilities.
In apartments, it is undesirable to install aluminum appliances due to pressure drops in the system, which adversely affect the metal. Optimum and tried for years option for apartments - cast-iron batteries. Anyway, you need to focus on financial opportunities and personal wishes.
For those who do not want to dive into independent calculations, we recommend using a special calculator for calculations that takes into account practically all the nuances affecting the efficiency of room heating:
Calculator for calculating the required heating power of the heating radiators
If the purpose of the calculation is to determine the total heating power needed to heat the room( for example, to select non-separable radiators) then leave the field blank
