At all times people have magnified the lily, considering it a symbol of hope, holiness, freedom. This noble flower was chosen as a symbol of its power by the French monarchs. Such a luxurious plant is definitely worth planting in the country house, a site near the house.

Lily( from Latin lilium) is a perennial bulbous culture belonging to an extensive family of lily. Its bulbs are quite large, often flattened from above. Shoots-peduncles of culture - erect 30-140 cm in height. As a rule, the flowers of the lily are enclosed in the inflorescence in the form of a brush, a broom, a flap or an umbrella. Single flowers are very rare. Coloring the flowers, as seen in the photo, can be very different( pink, orange, white, red, etc.) monochrome, in specks or with strokes. The shape of the flowers is cup-shaped, chalmoid, tubular, funnel-shaped. Arrangements for planting and caring for lilies - fairly simple, but they require a preliminary mastery of theoretical knowledge and the desire to apply them in practice.

Site selection

Gardeners, who decided to grow this culture, should initially be determined with the optimal site for it. The right choice will ensure a beautiful and long flowering of the plant. The best solution is to plant the lily in a sunny or slightly shaded place, protected from changeable winds. Avoid planting plants in the lowlands, as this can provoke decay of bulbs, roots due to overabundance of moisture. Also, for a lily planted in a low-lying area, the likelihood of being infected with a very unpleasant disease - gray rot.

Lily is like a loose, nutritious, well-permeable air and moisture soil. Heavy, clay soil can turn out to be fatal for delicate flowers because of the possibility of accumulating in it an overabundance of water, not desirable for the plant.

Planting lilies

When buying planting bulbs in a store, you should give preference to healthy, undamaged specimens - large, strong, "meaty".If there are growing lilies on the garden, which need to be multiplied, bulbs should be taken only from plants aged 3 to 4 years. Since long-term storage of planting bulbs is not welcomed, their landing for a long time should not be postponed. If necessary, perform a plant transplant on the site, you should dig it, gently cut the stem, manually divide the bulbs, and then plant one at a time.

Inexperienced gardeners, who had not previously encountered the cultivation of this crop, often ask the question: when to plant lilies? It should be noted that the best time for planting a crop is spring, autumn. In particular, for spring planting, April is optimal, and for autumn September is suitable.

When deciding how to plant lilies, you should take into account the fact that it is necessary to pre-prepare the soil for planting the plant. For this purpose, it is necessary to dig up the earth and fertilize it with humus or with a dumped manure. It is not superfluous to add wood ashes to the ground. Also, the introduction of mineral fertilizers( urea and superphosphate) is welcome.

The earth should be dug to a depth of about 40 cm, after which, level with rake and water. Preparation of the soil should be carried out at least two weeks before planting. In the formed holes( 20 cm deep), it is necessary to place the bulbs and fill them with earth. Fertilizer in the wells is not required. To avoid damaging the planting material in mice, the bulbs can be placed in special plastic cups( without the bottom), which can be made easily from plastic bottles.

Caring for Lilies

Lily care activities include keeping the ground beneath them in a loose and wet condition. Also, it is necessary to make timely application of fertilizing, to fight with weeds, pests and diseases.

As the leaves of the plant are highly susceptible to moisture ingress, it is recommended to water it "under the root".Lilies need a moderately moist soil throughout the season. The first half of summer is the time of the plant's greatest demand for moisture. Also, the culture needs water during the formation of bulbs after flowering and during the accumulation of nutrient stocks for winter. It is advisable to feed the crop before or along with its watering.

The grower should consider that after planting, in the first year, the development of the lily may be slowed down: the plant will not achieve the required growth, and its flowering will be more than modest. To ensure the best development of planted specimens, it is necessary to completely or partially remove the buds. A garter is suitable for the supports of weak or not very strong plants, so that they do not break down under their own weight.

In the second, third year after planting, the lily will please the grower with abundant flowering, which can then be weakened for the fourth or fifth year, and the growth will decrease. This is a signal that it is necessary to perform division, as well as replanting the copies in the new place assigned to them.
