Learning to distinguish types of roofing material
There are different types of roofing felt, and the character of the sprinkling plays a big role in their classification. Consider the classification of the material:
- Material with coarse-grained powder. It is used as the upper and lower layer of the roofing carpet and for the roof waterproofing. Fits both hot and cold mastic;
- Ruberoid with coarse-grained dusting from the pulverized and front side. Used for laying in the top layer of the roof;
- Material with scaly powder. It is produced in one-sided and two-sided variants. The first option is put only on hot mastic, and the second - on cold and hot;
- With fine-grained sprinkling - also available as one-sided and double-sided. It is used for waterproofing and as a lower roofing carpet;
- The spacer felt with dusting is used for the same purposes as the previous material.
All kinds of roofing felt have their designation, which you need to know when choosing a material. For example, the designation
PM 400 .The letters mean the following: P - ruberoid, M - fine grain. Other letters that occur in the notation have the following interpretation: K - large grain, H - scaly, PP - with a pulverized powder. The numbers indicate the weight of the material in grams per square meter.Note! Choosing ruberoid as a roofing material, it is necessary to take into account its features.
Which roofing felt is better: a variety of
material In addition to species, there are also varieties of ruberoid, which are based on the composition of the material itself.
Rubemast is a roll material that is produced on the basis of roofing cardboard. It differs from a common ruberoid in that it has an increased bitumen content on the underside, which improves plasticity and resistance to cracking. Its laying is done by melting the bottom layer or by plasticizing with solvents. Another variety - glass fiber, is the same material as the rubemast, except that the base is made of fiberglass.
Another kind of material is the Euroruberoid. It is made of fiberglass or synthetic base with the application of a cover layer of 2-5 kilograms per square meter. The cover layer is made by mixing bitumen and polymer additives. This material has excellent characteristics and a long service life. It is applied by a method of melting the bottom layer.
The last version of roofing felt is bare. This material is a cardboard that is impregnated with shale or coal product, with a two-sided mineral powder. For today it is a rather rare kind of roofing felt, since the traditional material is considered the best for the roofing.
Note! The above species have a service life of up to 30 years, which makes them an excellent and durable material for roofing roofs.
Pros and cons or what to look for?
In order to choose the best roofing material, it is not enough to know about the varieties and types of this material. Also it is necessary to pay attention to its advantages and disadvantages. So, bitumen, which forms the basis of ruberoid, softens at a temperature of 50 degrees, which, naturally, is unacceptable for the material used for roofing.
To improve this situation, there is material that undergoes oxidation, due to which softening occurs at a temperature of 90 degrees. However, along with this, its frost-resistance also decreases, and already at zero degrees it begins to crack. Note! Oxidation occurs with the participation of air, so after laying the material, this process continues and further, because of which its properties deteriorate.
The ruberoid is made on an organic basis, which, on the one hand, makes it environmentally friendly, and on the other hand, weakens it. So, over time, from the temperature drop and the effects of atmospheric precipitation, the cardboard base is destroyed, which degrades the waterproofing qualities. To remedy this situation, there are types of ruberoid with polymer additives, which extend its service life.
