Every person has long tried to protect their territory from unauthorized penetration by unauthorized persons. Raising the perimeter of the site of stone walls or a wooden palisade, the owner appeared confidence in the security of his home. And what about the decorative component? Is it beautiful? Probably not. It is much more interesting to weave decorative elements from the same tree and install them as a fence. And one of these beautiful components of landscape design can be considered a wicker fence, which is used to protect the dacha or as an element of the exterior of the countryside. Today on the "House of Dreams" we will talk about the types of wicker fences, their place in the design of the site and how to make a wattle fence by oneself.
Advantages and disadvantages of wicker fence
Decorative wicker fence is one of the most ancient inventions of mankind. Probably, now is not found in the history of the exact date of its appearance, and it seems that this fence has always existed. So what are the advantages of having a wattle fence? Let's enumerate them:
- Environmentally friendly - there is hardly any more environmentally friendly material than wood. We can say that decorating the site with a wicker fence, we breathe a second life into the wooden elements, and they pay us with their naturalness and purity. The most interesting thing is that when constructing a wattle fence, only natural ingredients are used, without using artificially created and dangerous substances for humans.
- Beautiful appearance - natural wood has always been appreciated for its aesthetic qualities, and the stakes and branches used in the fence are no exception. With the help of fences of different heights and different ways of weaving, you can create a unique design of the site.
- Ease of erection - if desired, such a fence for a summer residence or a suburban area can be done independently, without outside assistance. How to make a wicker fence with our own hands, we'll tell you later.
- Relative cheapness - this fence can be made even for free, using the branches and stakes from your tree. However, if you buy ready-made wicker sections and install them yourself, then the wattle will not be cheap.
But there are also disadvantages to such a fence:
- This is not a capital construction, it can be attributed to decorative elements rather than to protection from unauthorized penetration of third parties into foreign territory.
- Serves such a fence, too, not very long, so you can talk about a short period of operation.
- Add to this the complexity of the repair - like all wicker items, the fence is difficult to restore: if one element has become unusable, you have to disassemble the entire fence or the entire section.
So, despite the beautiful appearance of the wicker fence, it is necessary to reconcile with some disadvantages of this type of fencing.
Types of wicker fence
Such fences are high and low, in principle, they can "grow" to any height.
- Low knee-height fences are used as an element of landscape design, for example, as a garden fence.
- Meters of a meter high can zonirovat territory, for example, to separate the recreation area with the swings and pool from the rest of the site.
- A high fence up to two meters high is used as a full fence and fence throughout the site. An interesting variant of this type of fencing can be considered a more capital construction, consisting of columns made of natural stone, and sections of the wicker fence between them. This fence looks more monumental and, nevertheless, does not lose its beauty, especially since two natural materials - stone and wood - perfectly coexist with each other.
You can also classify wattles by the way weaving - it can be vertical and horizontal. In principle, the most common are horizontal fences, but vertical ones do not lose their charm. Real craftsmen weave beautiful patterns from the vine, carefully and meticulously weaving various azhur and pigtails.
Among the most short-lived fences, we can mention fences made of reeds and cattails. They are done simply, but they serve a maximum of three or four years, then dry out and crumble literally before our very eyes.
The most common wicker fences are made of flexible materials such as vines, willow, hazel, etc. But apart from them, wooden boards are used for the manufacture of fences. Interweaving between the hammered columns vertically or horizontally, they form an almost continuous fence without lumens. Such a woven fence of boards is more suitable as an external fence protecting the site. But the most important advantage of this fence is that it is two-sided, i.e.on both sides( both inside and outside) it looks the same, and the crossbeams and frames do not spoil the beauty of the wooden wicker fence.
It should also be noted that not only natural materials can be used to create wicker fences. Recently, PVC fences have been popular enough, which, unlike wooden ones, are more durable - they do not burn out in the sun, they do not fear moisture, they do not inhabit various pests. In addition, such a fence is easy to install, and the possibility of reusable assembly and disassembly increases its service life for an indefinite period.
How to make a braided fence with our own hands
To create a fence we need stakes with a diameter of about 5cm. For these purposes, you can take, for example, pine or oak( the first option is cheap, but not very durable, and the second one is durable but expensive), tree branches or twigs of vines, hazel, willow. Prepare rods better late in the autumn, when growth stops, but the juice is still moving. For these purposes, a vine with a diameter of 2-3 cm is suitable. To keep the fence longer, it is best to treat all its elements with antiseptic impregnation( in this case, it will not be attacked by various pests and bugs).
So, the preparations are made and we start to build a wicker fence with our own hands. Consider a variant with horizontal weaving:
- First you need to mark the plot. The stakes are clogged to the ground at a distance of 0.5 m from each other, however, to prevent decay, it is better to pre-make drainage under the fence. For this, a trench is dug up to 0.5 m deep and covered with sand.
- Next, the vine is horizontally intertwined between the pegs. To give it the necessary flexibility, you can drop the ends of the rods into the water for a while.
Depending on the density of the vine planting, the fence will transmit light or be virtually deaf. For dense weaving each rod will have to be pressed tightly to the rest. In order to be able to trim the bars beautifully, at the edge of the edge, release the branches for a distance of 15-20 cm.
How to decorate a fence
The wattle itself looks very beautiful, but to add originality to this fence, it can be decorated with interesting elements. Let's find out how to decorate a wicker fence? Excellent clay pots and jugs, put on stakes, are combined with the back. This distinctive element of the exterior is well complemented by other components of the peasant way of life - a decorative cart or wheel from it, a wooden table and chairs from roughly processed boards.
Do not forget to plant flowers next. If the fence is installed on the lawn, then the flowers can be planted in pots, and they already put on the hemp, set along the fence. Organic wicker sculptures, for example, willow balls or a woven bird in a nest, will also fit organically. A woven gazebo and low fences of vines around the trees will complement the exterior and make it complete.
You can also decorate such a fence with climbing and climbing plants used for hedges. More about the types of such plants "House of Dreams" already told, you can see the review on this link.
As you can see, a woven fence can become an important decorative element in the design of a garden or the decoration of a country plot. Therefore, the shortcomings of it are not so noticeable, after all, in a couple of years the fence can be renewed, so that he rejoices the eye again.
