As you know, the main thing in the bathroom - to prevent congestionhumidity in the room. To do this, the bathroom is put an additional ventilation system, use materials with a water-repellent coating, and carefully cover and seal all the seams. In the Soviet Union the issue was solved radically, covering all the seams and cavities with concrete mortar. In particular, the bath and the seams between the bathroom and the walls, to which it adjoined, were concreted. Dismantling the bathroom after this became an almost impossible task, requiring incredible efforts.

Ceramic tiles in the role of curbs

Now the choice is made in favor of more modern, but no less durable materials. In this article we will tell you how to close the seams between the bathroom and the wall so that the water does not get under the bath and excessive humidity and dirt accumulate with the help of curbs.

Features and requirements

In general, the curbs for the bathroom are subject to the same requirements as for any other finishing materials for bathrooms. Curbs should:

  • ensure tightness
  • have water-repellent properties
  • be resistant to deformation
  • be environmentally friendly and do not create an environment for the development of germs and mold
  • be resistant to detergents and brushes
  • to blend well with other materials in the bathroom.

Materials

The main criterion by which curbs for baths and sinks are chosen is the material of manufacture.

Border polyethylene strip for washbasins and bathtubs

Securely seal the holes against moisture ingress. They are easy to operate and cheap compared to other materials. There are a wide range of curbstones of different width, length and color. The tape has a self-adhesive base, so even a child can cope with this curb.

The essential disadvantage of this curb is its fragility. Such curbs, as a rule, are used as a temporary solution to the problem. If you want to extend the life of the curb tape and provide more reliable protection against moisture, you can additionally use a sealant under the tape. However, with this method of using the tape will serve you for several months, no more.

Plastic

The next in terms of the life of the curb is a plastic curb. Made of a very practical and yet inexpensive plastic, this curb is securely attached to the bath and the wall with a special glue. In this case, the plastic borders are very light and do not burden the structure, they are easy to assemble and simply wash. They work well with any materials. However, such curbs have their drawbacks - plastic can become tarnished and darken with time, scratches easily on it, and you will soon have to replace it.

Plastic curb

Ceramic

It should be selected for the tile used in finishing the bathroom. Such curbs are much more durable than those described above, and can serve you more than a dozen years. Ceramics provides good tightness and is durable in itself. However, you need to be careful - with improper installation, the ceramic border may crack.

The installation of ceramic curbs involves the use of special equipment and certain skills.

Ceramic curbs

Natural stone

Such curbs, of course, require an appropriate interior. Curbs of marble and granite are almost eternal, but in a small bathroom, laid out with ordinary ceramic tiles, they will look ridiculous. They are quite cumbersome and require certain skills during installation.

Calculate the number of

To calculate the number of curbs, you need to take the total length of the sides of the bath that come in contact with the wall( preferably with a margin) and divide this length by the length of the curb.

Some prefer to save and buy the necessary length of the curbs, and then, when something goes wrong, throughout the city they search for the remnants of the curb of the necessary texture and color.

We recommend that you buy a pair of curbs in reserve for in case some of them crack or somebody cuts it wrong.

In addition to the length, it is also necessary to take into account the width of the gaps between the bathroom and the walls. The fact is that when you buy, you will need to determine not only the length, but also the width of the material used. If the crevices between the bathroom and the wall are too wide, compared to the purchased curb, water will still flow into them and the use of the curb will be lost.

If you are going to purchase a curb of ceramics or natural stones, it is necessary to measure the length of each curb line as precisely as possible, since it will be very difficult to correct it at home in the place.

Curb installation yourself

Plastic

It's quite easy to mount a plastic curb. In addition to the curb itself, we also advise you to purchase a plastic corner. This will not only save you from having to adjust the edge of the curb, but it also helps to hide the traces of sealant and glue.

Procedure:

  1. Clean the surface of the walls and baths on which you will attach the curbs, from dirt and water. Wipe dry with a rag.
  2. Take the sealant, fill it with a slot, level with a spatula on the top and allow it to dry completely.
  3. From one end of the curb, set a value equal to the length of one side of the bath that adjoins the wall, and carefully cut the desired piece.
  4. Cover the border with adhesive tape, so as not to spoil its appearance with glue.
  5. The tile around the place where you will glue the curb is also better to protect something. For example, molar tape.
  6. Tightly press the curb to the surface and fill the space behind the curb sealant.
  7. Repeat the above steps for each side.
  8. Wait until the sealant has dried and remove the protective layer of adhesive tape.

It's better to fix a plastic curb on top of the tile, not under it, because the plastic is short-lived. Then later to replace the plastic border you do not need to dismantle and tile.

Editing curbs over tiles
