Tips The bathroom is rightfully considered to be the wettroom in the apartment, which is why it should be treated with great responsibility andmake the waterproofing of the bathroom. In addition to the long process of dismantling old materials, it is necessary to put in order the walls and the floor, which in most cases are far from equal.

Water is able to destroy a sufficiently strong material over time. A moist environment is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria and microorganisms, and as a result - the appearance of mold and unpleasant odor. Sometimes our indulgence can cost a colossal amount of money spent on repairing an apartment neighbors due to water leakage. Even a small amount of water can seep through the cracks and pores in the floor, and thus damage the neighbors from the bottom. Therefore, it is so important to waterproof the bathroom before proceeding with the tiling.

Waterproofing is a kind of process of preserving the floor and resembles a unique pallet with bumps. Such a coating will collect the moisture that accumulates in the bathroom and will not allow it to penetrate deep into the interior.

Variants of

There are many options for waterproofing, and the choice of this or that option depends on many factors.

Two of the most popular methods of waterproofing:

  1. Oaklaying
  2. Oiling.

The first method involves the use of roll or film materials, which in turn are divided according to the type of stacking into self-adhesive and fused.

Self-adhesive materials are easy to use and do not require the use of special tools.

The welded materials are mounted using a gas burner. It is necessary to thoroughly clean and level the surface, otherwise any unevenness can negate your efforts.

When using the burner, certain skills are required. Therefore, we recommend that this part of the work be entrusted to professionals.

In case of overheating of the material, in addition to a persistent unpleasant odor, toxic substances are released that are extremely harmful to humans, which continue to be released indoors even after a short time after repair, so think twice before deciding to apply this method.

Argument in favor of oklechnyh materials is cheap.

As for the coating materials, they are made on the basis of bitumen with the addition of solvent and latex or rubber. Such mixtures allow the surface to remain flexible, and as a result help to avoid the negative impact of the wet environment. As a rule, coating materials are used in conjunction with a reinforcing fiber net. Fiber protects the surface from small cracks and makes the base more durable. Lubricants have a lot of advantages, including ease of application and resistance to high temperatures. In addition, they have excellent adhesion or, in other words, adhesiveness.

Types of lubricants

Among the most common coating materials are the following types:

  • Bituminous mixture. It is made on the basis of petroleum bitumen with the addition of various fillers. Bitumen type insulation is a fairly economical solution.
  • Bitumen-polymer mixture( mastic).Such a mixture is popular among builders. It is based on latex and solvent, which allows the surface to remain strong.
  • Cement-polymer mixture. A universal mixture that is used for waterproofing both walls and floors.
  • Acrylic mixture. The latest development, which has remarkable adhesion, and in addition has a neutral smell.

There are cold and hot bituminous insulation types. The first is not recommended for use when interacting with an acid-base medium, which is concrete. A hot type of insulation involves laying a bitumen heated to 160 degrees on the surface of the bathroom. Hot bitumen perfectly fills the space, providing reliable protection against moisture penetration. However, it is very difficult to heat the mixture in a domestic environment, so it is advised to refuse use of this type or to turn to professionals.

Because bituminous materials are easily damaged by mechanical damage, they should be protected with a concrete screed.

Technology Atlas Woder E

In the bathroom in the waterproofing the wall of 10 cm is most needed from the place of connection with the floor and the place around the bath, washbasin, shower hose. The minimum height of the waterproofing is 10 cm, but very often it is carried to the ceiling. Therefore, Atlas Woder E technology is often used.

Preparatory work for

Waterproofing in the bathroom involves preparatory work that must be performed before proceeding to the actual waterproofing:

  • Thorough cleaning of the premises from dust and debris.
  • Test the strength of a concrete floor screed. It should be thoroughly approached to this process, since if cracks and voids are found, such a floor will uniquely break down during the waterproofing process. Therefore, if the old screed is not suitable for use, you should get rid of it. Plaster and concrete should be pre-moistened with a sponge or sprayer so that the waterproofing solution does not dry out prematurely. Then cover the surface with a primer and let it dry. After that we make a new coupler. We mix the solution and distribute it on the surface, preset on the surface of the beacon at a height of 3-4 cm. Leave the floor to dry for 1-2 weeks.
  • Application of a primer. Primer or primer is applied in two layers. Thus, adhesion with an insulated surface is improved.
  • Application of waterproofing materials to joints. First, the joints of the walls and the floor are coated with a waterproofing compound, and then we apply a water-repellent self-adhesive tape. In order for the tape to adhere well to the corners, we recommend using a small roller, passing it from above.

Use of roll materials

Rolled materials are self-adhesive waterproofing.

  • First we measure a piece of the necessary length and cut it off.
  • Then remove the protective film and lay this piece on the floor. For the reliable adhesion of the material to the surface, it is recommended to press it additionally with a roller.
  • The remaining sheets are overlapped with an allowance of 4-5 cm.
Waterproofing using roll materials

What is convenient for this technique is that you can start laying the tiles immediately after laying the roll materials. When using surfacing materials, the roll unwinds under the influence of a gas burner and melts, adheres to the surface. Roll "protection" will last long enough, but sometimes steals extra centimeters due to the thickness of the material.

Use of lubricants

  • If the material is in front of us in the form of a dry mixture, dilute it with water according to the instructions and we will interfere with a drill with a special nozzle until a uniform consistency is formed.
  • First, brush the primer in 2 layers on the surface of the walls and floor. Then leave it for a couple of hours.
  • Then, on the floor and the bottom of the walls( the edge), we apply the coating mixture in 2-3 layers. For liquid mixtures use a brush or roller, for thicker - a notched trowel.

You can start the installation of tiles no earlier than 24 hours. This method is suitable even for beginners, but characterized by a short period of operation( up to 5 years).

It is very important that the layers of waterproofing are a single unit, so all the material must be applied in one approach, without large time intervals.

Wooden floor waterproofing

It should be taken into account the fact that wood, unlike concrete, is good for moisture, which is a problem. Despite this, the process of waterproofing a wooden floor differs little from the process of waterproofing with the use of coating materials.

First apply the substrate, then apply the mastic in 2-3 layers, and then you can go to the decorative part.

Builders recommend using polyurethane paste as the main material. Also on sale is a special wood, treated with water repellent.

Tips Finally, I would like to give you some simple tips:

  • Make floor measurements before purchasing the necessary materials. The label of the material usually indicates the area to which the capacity is calculated.
  • Special attention should be given to the waterproofing of the bath. Additional protection can be achieved by coating the joints of the tile and bath with silicone sealant.
  • The installed "smart" system with alarm system that reacts to the slightest leakage and automatically closes the water in the apartment will help to avoid water leakage.
  • Pipes should also be processed with mastic.
  • The floor level in the bathroom should be below the floor level in the adjacent rooms.

Waterproofing in the bathroom - the process is long and time consuming, but the result and peace of mind is worth the effort.
