We estimate the condition of the walls with whitewashing
The first thing to do is to carefully inspect the walls and their covering.
First, how thick a layer of lime is deposited on the original substrate. If the layer is uniform, not too thick, firmly holds on the walls, there is a chance not to resort to washing the whitewash.
Secondly, we assess the condition of the walls themselves. Are they even? Is the putty and plaster firmly held together? Is it sand or clay? Is not the decoration blown up in places? If problems are present, then trying to keep the lime layer at least short-sighted, because, whatever one may say, more serious problems will have to be solved. In this case, the plaster is completely or partially cut off and re-made. If some parts of the walls remained untouched, they will have to clean the whitewash clean before further finishing.
We evaluate the selected wallpaper
The whitewash structure is a set of tiny particles of lime that are not actually bonded to each other. That is why they easily pass to objects that come into contact with the walls. This explains the fact that you need to carefully select the wallpaper that is supposed to be glued to the whitewash.
If you bought thin lightweight paper wallpaper, then under the other favorable conditions there is a chance of successfully pasting walls with lime. If you choose vinyl, cork, bamboo, fabric and other heavy varieties of wallpaper, do not even try to glue them over the whitewash. Whatever you do, you can not get a new cover on the walls.
Alternative version - liquid wallpaper. With a certain treatment of the surface of whitewashed walls, this option will remain the simplest and acceptable, except for their high cost.
How to glue the wallpaper on the lime?
If the whitewash layer is thin and uniform, the walls are even and strong, and the wallpaper is light thin paper or liquid, that is, all conditions favor sticking, it is necessary to make preparatory procedures. Loose structure of the lime needs to be fastened so that it can serve as a reliable support for the finish.
There are two ways to implement such preparatory work: modern and antiquated, and which one to choose for you.
A modern way to glue wallpaper directly onto the whitewash
Today in the construction shops you can buy a special primer for whitewashing and loose surfaces. Stock up with a large soft brush and apply three coats of this primer to the entire surface of the walls, making sure that the whitewash is soaked completely to the base. In this case, each subsequent layer is applied only after the drying of the previous one( from 3 hours in the dry summer to 24 hours in the wet season).
Wallpaper can be glued only after the final drying of the walls, that is, after a day or three.
The grandfather's method of gluing wallpaper on the lime
By the same principle, it is possible to fasten the whitewash without going to the store. With the same task will cope and the usual, familiar to everyone, a paste. The main thing is to weld it not too thick, so that it quickly permeates all the layers of whitewash, and necessarily strain from the lumps.
The paste dries longer than the primer, so the waiting time for drying the walls can take up to a week. Glue the wallpaper is also possible only after the substrate dries completely.
If the wallpaper you choose does not have a light weight, the walls do not meet the requirements, whitewash is too large a layer or it peels off, or you just do not want to risk repair - it's best to remove the whitewash with one of the methods tested in years.
