As if the road to you was not furniture, but over the years it wears out and the time comes when it is no longer possible to use it. First upholstery comes upholstery on sofas, armchairs and chairs, it not only becomes obsolete, dirty, but also dilapidated. Because of the unsightly appearance with your favorite soft chairs you have to part. If your family has old furniture that you inherited, then there is a chance to restore it.
To carry out the constriction of the chairs, it is necessary to observe the basic requirement - to preserve the wooden frame, but the final result will depend ondiligence and your desires.
If the chair is not very worn and the scuffs formed in some places, then you can disassemble it - take off the backrest and replace the old fabric with a new, suitable shade. If the frame is badly damaged by bark beetles, then it is possible to restore such a product, but the chair is unlikely to be as strong as before and eventually it will start to deteriorate and crumble. Carpenters are not advised to proceed with the restoration of furniture damaged by bugs-grinders. Individual elements can be replaced, but if the chair is badly damaged - it does not make sense to restore it.
In the 60-90s of last century as a filler for upholstered furniture used burlap, felt, cotton and hay. Even now, some furniture factories continue to be used in the production of technology in the 90s, and vegetable fiber is used as a filler for chairs. For several years of operation, such a natural filler quickly cracks, in some places lumps may form, as a result of which the upholstery fabric quickly deteriorates.
How to choose the upholstery for
When choosing a fabric for a waist of the chair, consider the following:
- the density of the material - it should keep the shape well and be strong;
- fabric should be easy to wear off;
- the possibility to treat the surface with a soap solution or brush it.
Popular fabrics:
- jacquard - thick fabric, has good wear resistance, it does not form puffs;
- Chenille is a popular upholstery for upholstered furniture. Cloth very dense and strong;
- tapestry - made of cotton, the material can be washed by hand or in a washing machine;
- nubuck or artificial leather - abrasion resistant material;
- velvet, flock - strong fabric, does not burn out;
- skin - "breathes", but is not resistant to mechanical damage( scratches).
How to pull the chair with your own hands
To work on stiffening the chair were carried out in a short time, think in advance what materials you need and prepare the appropriate tool.
Tools
List of materials and tools:
- cloth. It is best to use furniture fabrics for taping chairs - tapestry, flock or jacquard. They are resistant to abrasion and durable. Before you go to the store for a cloth, you need to equip yourself with a centimeter and determine the amount of material. Perform measurements of chair seating and add to the resulting figure another 10 cm on each side. This stock will go to the hem, as well as the height of the upholstery;
- filler. Good recommendations received such a filler as a sheet foam( thickness is not more than 40 mm), you can also use as a filler sintepon, batting or latex. Do not take bulk material( buckwheat husk, polyurethane or silicone beads) as a filler for seating the chair, since the load on this part of the chair will be much higher than the load on the pillow. If you use a small filler, after a few weeks of operation, it will start to pour. If the filler is chosen foam rubber, then its density should be from 30 to 50 kg / m3.If you use a different density material, the foam will be pierced and sitting on such a chair will be uncomfortable;
- tight cardboard to make a pattern;
- glue and brush. It is best to take PVA in the building store;
- stapler and staples for furniture or a cheaper option - small carnations and a hammer;
- screwdriver;
- pliers;
- tape measure and sharp scissors;
- ruler, pencil, chalk or a piece of soap for marking.
How to remove old fabric
Work should begin with the removal of the old upholstery.
How to remove the worn cloth:
- First, remove the seat. To do this, you need to turn the chair upside down and in a strictly prescribed sequence( it is desirable to remember the order of actions, since then it will be necessary to collect the chair back) to disassemble the fasteners. First, we screw the fasteners with a screwdriver, then remove the nails, unscrew the screws and remove the metal covers. Staples can easily be pinched by a screwdriver and pulled out with pliers. If they are worn out, the staples can be thrown away, and the rest of the fasteners can be folded into a separate bag, so as not to lose.
- Now it is necessary to check the condition of the wooden frame of the chair. If it is shattered, then the overstretching of furniture will not solve the main problem, the appearance will be beautiful, but sitting on a shattered chair will be unsafe. Therefore, first, it is necessary to remove all cracks in the wood( fill with a colorless sealant or glue with PVA glue), put the clamps, and weakened joints should be sealed.
- It's time to remove the old upholstery fabric. On the floor, put a plastic wrap or lay old newspapers. Remove the old cloth and gently remove all foam. At this stage, the necking of the chairs with their own hands is necessary to determine the measurements, so do not rush to throw out the worn cloth - just right from the cardboard you can make a pattern or carve the seat immediately following the old pattern. Put the old cloth on the wrong side of the new furniture fabric and circle the contour with chalk.
- Now it is necessary to lay aside the fabric for a while and start the seating base. Remove the remains of adherent crumbled foam, remove the old glue.
Prepare fabric and foam
Since it will be difficult for a beginner to perform a neck-tightening without a template, we will just make it up. You can make a template in different ways. The first option: put a sheet of cardboard plywood seat, circle it with a pencil. Now the plywood can be removed, and in our drawing, add 10 cm on each side to the allowances. We cut out the template with scissors or a sharp clerical knife. The second option: use the ready-made template and apply the old cloth to the cardboard sheet, circle the contour with a pencil. This will be our template. Choose the right option for yourself and make a seating pattern.
We have a ready-made stencil - you can cut the right part with a sharp knife from a foam rubber sheet. By the same principle, we make a pattern from the fabric: we draw around the contour and add another 10 cm on each side( let it be better that there is a small stock of fabric than it will not be enough).We cut out the part.
If you have chosen a fabric with a pattern, then it is necessary at the initial stage - the acquisition of fabric, take this moment into account and take the material with a margin. Place the cloth with the pattern so that it is in the middle and there are no displacements. If this rule is not followed, the chair will not look presentable. Now you need to fix the fabric and make the markings.
In some chairs, instead of the usual seat of plywood, you can see a frame of mesh or rubber. When the wicker base is normal, then you do not need anything, if the material has become unusable, then it must be replaced by a thick wide rubberized tape.
How to pull the chair
First glue the foam rubber to the plywood. Foam is adhered to PVA glue. On the front( upper) part of the seat of plywood, apply a brush layer of glue and attach foam rubber. Wait for the glue to seize. Work on fabric upholstery can be started after the glue has dried completely.
When the glue dries - check again if the foam is well adhered - if there are not glued areas, they should be filled with glue and wait until it dries completely. Then you can fix the upholstery fabric. Lay it with the wrong side up, from above place the seat so that the foam rubber is placed "face" to the fabric. On each side, tuck the fabric( this stock) on the plywood. Pull the fabric tightly so that the fabric does not gather in the folds. Now take the furniture stapler and shoot the edges of the fabric to the plywood. Work consistently, with a step of no more than 2 cm. Between the staples there should be no large folds. If you see that there are large folds in the rounding areas, and the furniture brackets do not hold them, then you can strengthen these places with furniture studs. Knock the carnations with a hammer. Surplus tissue after the end of the waist of the chair can be cut.
If you pull the square seat of the chair, then at the corners it is necessary to lay the folds and direct them to the center, bend the fabric, and then attach it to the plywood.
The overstretched seat of the chair is placed back on the frame, we fix the plates first, and then screw the screws. Pulling the chair with your own hands is complete. Here is what a restored chair looks like:
