Extensions to the house can be of a wide variety. But, if you want to learn how to design and build your own house, it's best to begin with light buildings. In addition, the veranda will allow you to spend many fine minutes outdoors, both alone and in the company of friends. So, let's consider the construction of a light veranda.
Video - extension to the house with their own hands
The foundation of the veranda-extension.
The basis of a light verandah - attachments to your structure may be supporting beams fixed on the walls of your house or foundation pillars installed along the perimeter of the future annexed veranda. Both types of supports can be combined.
Before the beginning of construction, inspect the site of the area under the veranda. In some cases, a light columnar foundation can not be dispensed with and you will have to build a solid concrete foundation. However, in our story, we will confine ourselves to the veranda, which, on the one hand, rests on the support beam, and on its center and the outer edge of the base will serve as support posts.
Necessary tool
To start the construction of our light veranda, we need to stock up with the following tools and building materials:
- -the metal pipes from which the supports will be made,
- -Ingredients for the concrete mix: gravel, sand and cement,
- - fastener: metal corner, self-tapping screws and nails,
- -removable anchor bolts,
- -boards 15 and 5 centimeters thick, we will put them on the logs,
- -well-finished board for the veranda floor finish,
- -50 mm barfor veranda fencing,
Tools: goggles and protective gloves, circular saw, screwdriver, hammer, construction level, agitator for concrete mix.
Step-by-step instruction for construction of the veranda-extension
At the initial stage, check the site on which you are going to erect an extension. Given that our veranda will be open - be sure to provide under it a drainage system, that is, you should compact the ground under the veranda and make it a slope for the water current.
Installing supports
If there is a strong wall, which is adjacent to our building, it can be used as a support, nailing a wooden board to it.
First fix the board with a width of at least 5 centimeters to the support wall.
After the reinforcement of the support board, we place wooden "reams" on the edges of the marked verandas, designed to help us with the construction. These structures must be installed outside the boundaries of the marked boundary of the terrace.
We stretch a solid thin rope along the marked boundaries of the veranda. We control the correctness of the size of the markup, for this we stretch two more ropes along the diagonals and calculate by the Pythagorean theorem the presence of right angles. If the right angles are not fixed, then we transfer pegs with a string until we achieve the ideal geometry.
The markings created with a twine are transferred directly to the ground. In addition to the diagonals, we determine the middle line of our terrace, along which we will install one of the lines of the supporting columns.
Basement
We are now setting up the support posts. We prepare pits for them. The distance between supports should not exceed one and a half meters. Dig or drill holes depending on the number of supports required, their depth should be about a meter. At the bottom of the pits we place a gravel cushion about 10 centimeters thick. We place the pre-formed pipes in the pits, fixing their vertical position with the help of boards.
Fill the gaps between the pipes and the walls of the pit with a concrete mix of 1 part of cement, 3 parts of sand, 5 parts of gravel and the required amount of water. We expect the hardening of the concrete solution within three days. To ensure that the vertical position of the pipe is not disturbed during hardening, we fix them by spacers as shown in the figure.
If you are interested in more information about building a foundation on clay or on other surfaces, read it on our website in the foundation section!
After forming the necessary number of support columns, proceed to the next stage of construction of a light veranda.
Now back to our backplane. We fix the bar below 75 on it.
Then we derive the level of the future floor of the veranda - we saw off excess parts of the vertical pillars, checking our actions on the building level.
The next step is fixing the pillars on the vertical pillars. We use board 5 on 15.
We check the top surface of the supporting bars using the building level.
We place the logs
Across the established support bars we need to install logs. They are fixed to the supports by means of metal fixing angles. Just like in the case of supports, you can use boards 5 to 15. Fix the corners of the lag with a distance of 40 centimeters. The procedure for installing log boards is from the center of the structure towards the edges.
When installing the log, we check their horizontal position using the building level. Also we are trying to ensure that they are strictly perpendicular to the support beams.
We trim the sides of the veranda
Using boards, we sew the sides of the created verandah base, this will create additional protection for the foundation of our extension.
We install the floor of the veranda
Many types of material can be used as a floor covering on our veranda. The most popular for such purposes in the modern market is a terrace board, it is also called "decking".It has a special impregnation and is resistant to the effects of atmospheric precipitation. However, you can do with ordinary, well-treated boards and self-soak them with aseptic solution. When fixing the floorboards of the veranda-extension, leave between them a small gap. This will prevent water from accumulating on the floor and damaging the flooring. You can maintain the necessary clearances simply by inserting nails between the boards when they are locked. Speakers beyond the veranda edge of the boards must be sawed.
We create the fence
So far we have made only the floor of our veranda. In order for it to be safe, it is necessary to construct a fence on it. In principle, ready-made sets of fences can be purchased in building materials stores, but you can save money and make it yourself. To make the fence you will need a bar of 50 millimeters( from which we will make balusters) and a thinner one - by 25 millimeters - on the grate.
The optimum height of the balusters is about 0.9 meters. Crop their ends at 45 degrees and attach them to the floor of the veranda with metal corners. We dispose of them with a distance of 0.9 meters. We leave on one side a gap in which a ladder will adjoin the veranda.
Using boards, we attach to the balusters two rows of limiters - on the top and at the bottom. We recommend to install the bottom board in 0.3 meters from the floor of our veranda-extension.
Create a fence grid. Using a thin bar cut it on the height of the fence. The upper edge can be cut at an angle of 45 degrees. The distance between the bars of the grid can be 10 centimeters.
So, it's quite easy to build a veranda-extension. Now you can construct a ladder. To do this, you can also use the ready-made sets from the stores of building materials. When building your own veranda, you can adjust its dimensions, guided by your own considerations.
