Why is a carbon filter? Since ancient times, people have tried to purify water from small impurities, debris and mud in many ways. The most effective was the method of water purification by means of charcoal. Modern installations operate on the same principle, only inside the bulb are not pieces of charcoal, but crushed activated carbon.

How the water is purified

The pressed coal is in the filter, together with ground coal and other materials. Due to the fact that there is enough pore in the coal filter, the device gently and effectively cleans incoming water from contamination. If you study the principle of water purification with a carbon filter, it becomes clear that the cleaning device is equipped with large and small pores. The former are able to retain large particles, and the latter - do not allow the smallest molecules to pass through the filter.

To verify the efficiency of the filter, we pay attention to the iodine index and the hardness of the substance. If the hardness is not enough, then the smallest coal particles will seep into the water and get with clean water into our body.

The main task of filters is to clean water from impurities, remove dirt, fight rust( along with water gets into tanks), and purify water from foreign smells, remove unpleasant aftertaste. And this is not all, because the carbon filter is capable of detaining living microorganisms.

Unfortunately, filters can not completely clear water from pathogenic bacteria, remove radioactivity, salts and reduce the concentration of metal ions. For these purposes, it is necessary to use additional stations and devices.

Scope of cleaning filters

Coal filter for water is used in everyday life, less often in industry due to large volumes of consumed water.

A common form of release is in cartridges. It is a small multi-layered block, in which there are several layers of mesh material( different density) and activated carbon. The grid detains large debris and rust. Such filters are suitable for home use. In industry it is not advisable to install filters because of low efficiency. For large enterprises, magnetic or electromagnetic filters with a reliable metal housing are used. Such devices are installed in drainage systems.

Timely replacement of the

filter Not all consumers understand why it is necessary to change the cleaning filters. If we consider separately a flow-through charcoal filter for water, we can conclude that after a few months( this depends on the amount of water consumed), the cartridge will need to be replaced with a new one. Once the water passes through the carbon filter, it is cleaned. On the grid inside the cleaning device small particles and other contaminants accumulate. As a result, if the filter is not changed for a long time, then these deposits will gradually seep into the water. And, finally, most importantly, when there is a lot of sediment and no space for them, they break through the filter and enter a tank for purified water. The quality of such a liquid remains in doubt, the water will be even more polluted than the tap water. Therefore, it is so important to change the cartridge in a timely manner.

On average, the life of the coal filter is 2-3 months, but each cleaning device can have its own service life. Therefore, if you buy a filter in the store, get a consultation from the seller. The quality of water and the amount of consumption affect the life of coal filters. The only thing you can advise is to change the filter in time or with a little delay in a few days.

To make it clear, here is an example: you bought a coal filter in the store with resin and silver. It is designed for 450 liters of water( at the maximum), and this is about 1.5-2 months of use. After 2 months, the filter cartridge needs to be replaced.

Installing the coal filter

You can install the carbon filter yourself if you read these recommendations:

  1. You have bought a compact filter in the form of a jug in the store. How to insert a filter correctly, you can learn from the instructions. Look at this image. You see how the filter works. First you need to empty the cartridge from the packaging. Then lift the receiving compartment or funnel and screw the cleaning device into it. Then it is necessary to insert the receiving funnel together with the cartridge into the second compartment. All, you can check how the filter works. In order to receive purified water, it is necessary to pass water through the filter several times. During this time the filter will pass the degree of purification. Pour tap water into the tank and close the lid. Wait for the water to filter. You can pour clean water through the hole( in the figure it is indicated by the number 5).Repeat the procedure several times, after which you can drink water. Make sure that the cassette is constantly in the water.

  1. If with the installation of a simple cleaning filter everything is clear, then putting the charcoal filter on the tap will be a little more complicated. You bought a filter that you need to put on a water tap. It is necessary to immediately determine which thread is at the tap: internal or external. If it is ordinary, then this makes the task easier. A spare cartridge is included with the filter. You need to assemble the filter and screw it to the tap.
  2. Insertion of the filter into the sink. This is a single-stage carbon filter, which is necessary not only to properly assemble, but also to connect. To get clean water, you need to install the filter itself next to the sink and connect it to the mixer using an adapter( this is a divertor).It will be permanently connected to the filter and ready for operation at any time of the day. The adapter switches the water in 2 directions: water is drained into the sink or passes through the filter( passing through a separate hose) and enters the receiving tank. If you purchased a model without a divertor, then you have to constantly connect the nozzle to the nozzle, when you need to filter the water. If you have an old mixer, then simply put the tube on the tap and fix it with a rubberized washer. If you have a modern filter, then you may need an additional adapter.

  1. Installation of the main charcoal filter for water under the sink. Install a stationary filter under the sink and put a separate faucet on the sink to exit the purified water. Carbon filters can be 2, 3 and 4-step. Pay attention to this scheme to understand the principle of the devices and the operation of the coal filter.

And now we will stop in detail and together we will perform the filter setting:

  1. First you need to prepare everything you need, discuss with all members of the family in which place it is better to put the filter and try it in a niche under the sink: is it well fit there and will it be convenient to replace the cartridges. If everything is in order, you can start training.
  2. You will need a tape to seal joints and tools.
  3. Let's mark a place for a new crane and calculate the length of the hose for drinking water.
  4. Warning! It is important to close the water before starting work.
  5. Do not confuse: the tap, which blocks the water, must be put in front of the filter!
  6. Install a fresh water tap and pass the hoses to the filter.
  7. Now you can close the water and drain the leftovers. Hoses to detach and attach the adapter to the water pipe.
  8. The hose( reinforced) can be put in its place.
  9. Install the overflow valve.
  10. After that you can do the assembly of the filter, if you bought it in disassembled form. In the complete set of delivery there is all necessary. Check for stubs and stoppers, they can be removed.
  11. Inside the main body there are filters, you need to connect with a hose a faucet and a filter with an adapter. At the output, connect the tap for clean water.
  12. On this one, you can check the operation of the filter. To do this, open the water and immediately look carefully if there are leaks in the place of connection of the hoses with the adapter, as well as at the outlet and the entrance, you need to re-tighten all( you can tighten with tape) and check the seals.
  13. We open the tap for purified water and wait. The system will fill approximately 5 minutes. Do not get scared if the water is cloudy. The system is washed and a few minutes later, when the air leaves it, pure water will flow.

Competent operation of coal filters

In order to extend the service life of the filter, it is necessary to adhere to such rules:

  • the water pressure in the system should not exceed 8 atmospheres;
  • if you connect the filter through a hot water supply system, then such water can not be drunk. The filter will quickly fail;
  • it is forbidden to install cleaning devices near heating devices;
  • the distance between the filter and the water heater is from 2 m;
  • regularly check the drainage hole so that the contaminated liquid comes out and does not flow back into clean water;
  • if tap water is often exposed to chlorine treatment, then the carbon filter can neutralize it;
  • if water comes from deep sources( wells), then the carbon filter is not able to cope with the purification of such water.

How to make a charcoal filter for water with your own hands

For a family of several people, you can make a filter yourself, and without significant costs. For the construction of a water purifying vessel, it is possible to use improvised means, for example, a bottle.

So, for work we need:

  • plastic bottle for 5 l;
  • a bucket( made of plastic with a lid) or a glass jar;
  • wipes;
  • fabric "Lutrasil";
  • cotton wool;
  • charcoal;
  • file or nazhdachka;
  • electric drill with thin drills;
  • sharp knife.

Construct the filter yourself:

  1. We unscrew the lid from the bottle and in the center we mark the circle with a marker, it should be of the same diameter along the inside with the neck and coincide with the thread.
  2. Drill holes( use a thin drill), and then you can cut the hole further with a sharp knife by hand.
  3. Sharp edges smooth out nazhdachkoy or file.
  4. Turn the bottle over and cut the bottom with a sharp knife.
  5. Turn the bottle and insert it into the hole. Should be a funnel.
  6. In it we put a folded in several layers of fabric, paper napkins and cotton wool, and then pour in charcoal and re-lay the layer of the filter material.
  7. We put the bottle in a bucket or a glass bottle and fill it with water. Water can be taken either from the tap, well or from a well.
  8. After a few minutes, when the water passes through the homemade filter, the bucket will fill. The first strait must be drained, so we clean the charcoal filter. You yourself want to do this, because you will see that the water from the filter goes out muddy. Fill again with fresh water and wait, it will already be clean and usable.

Charcoal can be bought from the store or made by yourself. For this you will need birch logs. You can not use pine, because it contains tar. Put firewood in a metal container and light it. Wait, when the wood is burned, there will be black coals - this is charcoal. It is necessary to wait, when it will cool down, grind and use to the destination.
