About the effectiveness of the

tool The chisel is a cutting-and-strike tool for rough material processing. It is a metal bar with a sharpened at a certain angle cutting part. Most young locksmiths begin to get acquainted with the tools with the chisel. No serious skills for working with this tool are needed, as this is a crude, primitive, but effective adaptation.

Note! You can use the tool to cut almost any material, and limited its ability to only the skills of the master.

Chisel must be in all home workshops, in which the owner is engaged in the repair or manufacture of any tools. With its help, it is possible to cut a nail or a thick wire, cut down some detail from a sheet of metal, unscrew the nut, which is jammed, to knock down the influx from welding and so on. Since not always at hand is a Bulgarian, which can be used for cutting metal, and work is necessary, then in such cases, a "chopper" is used. Sometimes it is even more effective than a Bulgarian, for example, if there is a need to make a preparation for a homemade spoon-bait.

Technical characteristics

The chisel is available in several versions, which differ in the shape of the holder:

  • Oval;
  • I-ends;
  • Flat-oval.

Tool made of high-quality carbon or alloy steel is manufactured. Dimensions vary in length: 100, 125, 160, 200 millimeters. They also have different widths: 5, 10, 16, 20 millimeters. The degree of its hardening can be determined using an old file, which should be carried out on the hardened part. If the file has left a minimum of tracks, then the metal is sufficiently hardened. Also, the tool must be firm so that it does not break when it strikes.

Important! According to GOST there are metal grades that can be used for making a chisel. Therefore, check the certificates, and if there are inconsistencies, then refrain from buying. The angles of chiselling can be different. For soft metals, sharper corners are used, at 30 degrees, for solid angles is 45, 60 and even 70 degrees.

How to use a metal chisel?

For the proper cutting of metal, it is first marked. It is done by any sharp object that will leave a clear trace. A thin sheet of material can be cut on the anvil by guiding the chisel into the drawn markings. If the sheet is small, but the thickness is such that it does not cut through in one stroke, it is better to pin it into the metal vise. Vise lips are aligned with the markings. If the sheet is thick, the marking is placed several millimeters above the jaws.

Chisel must be supported on the vise sponge with a slope of 30-35 degrees. The point is directed to one of the edges of the processed material with a slope of 45 degrees. With the help of a hammer it is necessary to make short and strong blows on the back of the instrument. In this case, the tool itself does not need to be tightly clamped by hand, it is only necessary to hold it slightly. If the material is not cut in one stroke, then another approach is taken. Sometimes it makes sense to do a re-felling on the opposite side of the markup in order to speed up the work.

Important! When working, it is necessary to follow not behind the butt plate, which hits, but behind the edge of the instrument.
