How to tin wires - an easy way to tin

We have already told you about how to solder wires at home, where they stopped a little at such a stage of soldering as tinning of bare copper veins. Now we will tell you in more detail why you need to tin the wires and how to do it correctly without experience in working with a soldering iron. The instructions will be provided as follows - first, let's talk about what tinning is for, and then we'll talk about all the nuances of this process.

Why is this so important?

The fact is that in air, copper can oxidize, which often leads to a deterioration in the contact between the wires. In the future, poor contact begins to heat up and, as a result, the electrical wiring may catch fire. To prevent this from happening and soldering electrical wires was durable, reliable and safe, it is necessary to tin the stripped ends of the conductors using lead-tin solder.Photo soldering

In addition, tinning is used during soldering, for example, when connecting LED strip

to the power supply. If the conductors of the LED strip are not irradiated, the soldering site will be unreliable and it is possible that the wiring will fall off over time.

Step-by-step instruction

So, so that you understand how to properly tin the wires, we provide step-by-step instructions in pictures:

  1. Prepare the necessary tool: a sharp knife, tweezers or pliers, a soldering iron, solder and flux (in our case, rosin).
  2. Strip the PVC insulation from the conductor. For this it is best to use stripping tool, but if there is no such thing - a knife to help. It is necessary to strip the insulating layer by 10-20 mm.
  3. Carefully, using the same knife, strip the core to a metallic sheen. If the wire that you need to tin is stranded, fluff up all the wires and very carefully strip them with a knife.
  4. Plug in the soldering iron and wait for it to heat up. By the way, before tinning, you need to clean the soldering iron tip of debris and old solder. We recommend using a file for this.
  5. Run the heated tip along the tip of the wire that you are going to tin.
  6. Touch the tip of the soldering iron to the rosin, and then immediately to the solder. The working surface of the soldering iron should be evenly tinned.Simple tinning method
  7. Touch the sting to the copper wire. The solder should be evenly distributed over the copper strand. For better tinning, we recommend taking the conductor with pliers or tweezers, and then tinting the tip from all sides, scrolling the wire yourself.
  8. Visually see how well you did the tinning of the cable. The photo below is an example of a job well done. If the entire work surface is not covered with solder, repeat steps 6 and 7.Tinned conductor tips

In this way, you can quickly and efficiently tin wires at home. We draw your attention to the fact that tinning of thin wires from headphones (or a microphone) should be done a little differently. Since the wires are enameled (opened with varnish), you must first carefully clean the enamel with a sharp knife. After that, it is already necessary to perform tinning with a soldering iron.

You can tin the wires without rosin - using a special soldering acid. In this case, you first need to treat the working surfaces (the tip and the tip of the wiring) with a brush dipped in acid, and then apply the solder. Both methods can be used without fear for the quality of the future connection. As for a thick wire, it is easier to irradiate it than a very thin one. A little skill and even less time is required for this, the main thing - do not forget to clean the surface of the vein with a knife.

Using such a simple technology, you can perform tinning yourself with a soldering iron. We hope that now you know how to tin wires and what it is for. If at some point you did not understand, we recommend watching a visual video instruction or ask a question in the comments!
