We make a manual winch: instruction and video

Winch is one of the most ancient devices that facilitate the movement of weights, invented by man much earlier than he knew the laws of physics. The principle of operation of the winch is based on the rule of the lever: applying a small amount of effort to the handle can move and lift quite heavy objects. Winches and hoists are widely used in the farm for raising construction materials, dragging cargo and even for plowing the land. Winches, powered by a manual or electric drive, are also indispensable for off-road enthusiasts.

Buy winch or make it yourself? Which winch design is better? The answers to these questions depend on how often you are going to use it, what loads to move. Winches with a manual drive require the application of force, but do not depend on the availability of electricity. The electric winch can move loads with a lot of weight without any effort on your part, but it needs to be connected to the network or the battery. Below are the designs of several winches, which you can do yourself, which winch to choose - it's up to you.

Winch from cable and piece of pipe

The variant of the simplest winch, which can be made literally from improvised materials and in a few minutes, is popular with motorists. This design is a cable rigidly fixed on a piece of pipe, put on the axle. The axis is driven into the ground or fixed in a different way. Under the lower turn of the cable, any lever is shoved: a shovel from a shovel, a pipe, a sturdy pole. Rotating the lever so that the cable is wound on the pipe, you can move a fairly heavy object, for example, a stuck car. This device can not be called a full-fledged winch, but it performs its functions.

Hand winch

Hand winchs include any devices that allow you to move loads and have a manual drive. The most common winches are a drum type: a coil is wound around the coil, and the coil is rotated by means of a handle through a gear drive: a worm or a system of sprockets of different sizes. The higher the gear ratio, the less force is required to be applied to the handle.

For effective operation, the hand winch must be rigidly fixed to a fixed object, for this purpose, fixing holes are made on the winch frame. The handle connects to the shaft on which the small sprocket is rigidly fixed. The coil is rigidly connected to a large sprocket, which has a clutch with a small one. The cable is attached at one end to the coil, a carbine or hook is attached to the second end.

Winch with manual or electric drive with your own hands

If you have the skills to work with a welding machine, you can make the winch yourself from improvised materials.

You will need:

  • Pipe of rectangular cross-section for making the frame;
  • Pipe or finished shaft for the drum;
  • Sheet metal for drum discs, thickness 3 mm;
  • Studs with thread M10-M12 length 24 cm - 6 pieces, nuts;
  • Tube with Ø14 diameter - 6 identical lengths of 20 cm;
  • Large and small sprockets and chain;
  • Hubs for fastening the drum to the shaft and for attaching the shaft to the frame;
  • Lever for manual drive, petrol or electric motor, operating from the mains ~ 220 V or car battery;
  • Cable of the required length with a carabiner at the end;
  • Welding machine and electrodes;
  • Bulgarian with cutting and grinding disc;
  • Paint and primer for metal;

Set of wrenches.

Winch technology:

  1. According to the drawing, a pipe with a rectangular section of 20x20 mm is cut into a frame for a bulgarian. All connections made perpendicularly are obtained by trimming the blanks at an angle of 45 degrees.

  2. Lay the workpieces on a flat surface. Weld the winch frame with a welding machine pointwise at the junction of the workpieces. Verify the perpendicularity of the corners and the correspondence of dimensions, after which the welds are completely welded. A sheet metal platform with longitudinal grooves is welded to fix the drive motor. Remove the scale and burrs with the grinding wheel of the grinder.

  4. Begin to make the drum. From the sheet metal, cut two circles of the same diameter - about 30 cm. In the center of each circle, drill a hole along the diameter of the shaft, and also make six holes at a distance of 7-8 cm from the center. Drill holes for fixing the hubs - 4 on each disk. Attach the hubs to the bolted joint. Fasten the discs of the drum with the help of studs: fix each pin in one disc, put on it a Ø14 tube, then put on the studs the second disk and tighten on the nuts and locknuts.

  5. The drum is attached to the shaft. The shaft can be made from a metal pipe of a suitable diameter or a ready-made shaft of high-strength steel can be used from any mechanism. On the shaft on the outside of the drum, a large star is fixed - you can use an asterisk from the motorcycle gearbox, for example. On the projecting parts of the shaft, the hubs are mounted to fix the drum on the frame.

  6. Install the drum with the shaft on the frame, fixing them with the help of external hubs and bolts. An electric or gasoline engine is installed on the platform with a small asterisk fixed to the output shaft. Wear the chain and adjust its tension by moving the motor across the site in rectangular mounting grooves to the optimum position. The chain should not sag, but too much tension is undesirable - the wear of the sprockets will increase, and the chain may also break. Check the tension of the chain by turning the drum by hand - it should not restrain the rotation of the drum when unwinding the cable.

  8. The shank on the opposite side is used to secure the winch to the vehicle. In this case, it is recommended to close the drum with a protective cover, which prevents dirt and precipitation from getting onto the cable.

  9. If the drive is to be made universal, an anchor can be provided from the outside of the shaft. In this case, in the absence of fuel or electricity, you can use the winch manually.

The presented winch design is simple and reliable, and although it is not possible to switch the gear ratio, reverse and other auxiliary functions, it performs perfectly the task of moving heavy loads in the horizontal plane. If you need to lift the load to a higher altitude, such a winch can be used in combination with a manual hoist or simply throwing the cable through a solid support.
