What is the corner for the archway
The arches that connect the space of adjacent rooms, replacing rectangular doorways, rounded niches in walls and partitions give a unique design to the interior. Standard rigid corner elements in this case can not do to protect the protruding edge, so you have to look for a material suitable for finishing complex structures. Decoration in this place will wear out more quickly, the paint will wear off, the wallpaper will come off, and peel off at the joints. This problem can be solved by setting the corner for the arch. It will protect against this wear and mechanical damage this part of the opening, emphasize the smoothness of the lines, the shape of the structure, it will give the construction a more elegant appearance.
Material can be:
- wooden;
- with metal;
- plastic( made of PVC profile);
- cork.
According to construction forums, in practice the plastic version is more often used. In addition to decorative, the finish performs a protective function: like the casing, it prevents the abrasion of paint, wallpaper, etc.
One of the shelves is one-piece, perforated( the perforation is made for ease of attachment), the other - from individual trapezoidal segments, also with perforations. This special design allows you to bend the material to the desired radius and form any bends. Thus, it is possible to process both a round element of a false ceiling, and an opening of a complex shape.
Tip: When choosing the color of the material, take into account the color of the decoration of the room, the color of the curtains on the window and other decor items. Harmoniously selected color accents will add comfort to your home.
Flexible arch corner in the finish of the opening
Elastic material is an ideal component for finishing the apertures, niches and windows of any size, as well as other curvilinear structures. Trapezoidal segments of one of the sides( shelves) of the corner allow to move from the inner radius to the outer one. Used to create a shape and protect the edge of curved surfaces of architectural elements, creates a soft smooth silhouette. The length of up to three meters allows for seamless fastening, which also positively affects the aesthetics. Mounting is quick and easy: it is fixed to the gypsum plasterboard elements of the segmented sections of the cut-off shelf with steel staples using a special construction stapler. After installation, the structure must be covered with a putty. After the surface is ground.
You can buy an arched corner in a specialized construction shop or in the construction market.
Decorating arches with a corner
To date, there are a great many options for finishing rounded openings. This method is really simple and practical. The diverse color of the material allows you to combine it with the elements of interior decoration.
What may be needed:
- arched corner;
- mounting adhesive for plastic or cork( depending on the material);
- decoration;
- metal studs without hats;
- hermetic treatment;
- glue( liquid nails);
- hammer of rubber.
Preparing the surface for installing the corner
First of all, you need to clean the arch of dust and dirt, and immediately before installing the finish degrease the place of its attachment. Carrying out these works is necessary for more reliable installation.
If the opening is simply plastered, make sure that the plaster does not fall off as a result of the work. It should not have cracks, it should be monotonous and smooth. If the plaster has any irregularities( chips, cracks, unevenness), gently remove the broken layer and put a new layer of plaster. After the plaster dries, the surface must be sanded and then cleaned of dust. The installation of the corner itself can only be carried out in a warm room without drafts.
Fastening of a finishing corner on gypsum cardboard and other surfaces
Finishing is fastened on special glue or liquid nails. Glue or liquid nails should be applied to the inside of the corner. Since, in addition to the protective function, it will also perform decorative, it should be selected according to the tone lighter or darker than the basic finish, thereby creating a contrast. The opening, designed in this way, will look more original.

Now separately about the installation of plastic and cork protective finishing materials for indoor decorative bulk structures.
Cork Corner
Cork is one of the most environmentally friendly and resilient materials. You can install it yourself. Most importantly, carefully make measurements of the opening, errors in the size of the finished parts will not be corrected. This may entail bending the details. Before installing the finish, you need to thoroughly clean the surface of the wall, clean it of dust and always degrease. The glue should be applied to the inside of the cork, after which it is necessary to wait 15-20 minutes for the material to absorb the glue. During installation, the plug is pressed against the surface over the entire surface of the structure. Try to squeeze the material evenly, gently laying it on the surface of the opening. The cork should at the maximum give the wall that has absorbed the glue, but you should try to avoid the formation of air bubbles or the glue itself. After the corner on all sides, you have to knock with an elastic rubber hammer for a more firm fit, while the edges of the glue can come off excess glue( remove them immediately with a soft rag).After installing the material in place, wait 2 hours for the adhesive to adhere as closely as possible to the wall surface.
Plastic corner
Plastic corners more often than other materials are used because of cheapness, practicality and variety. They are available in different colors, which allows you to emphasize the rounded opening in the interior of the apartment. Plastic finish can also be installed independently: as in the previous case, you need to accurately measure all the parameters. The surface on which the finish will be fastened should be thoroughly cleaned. Before installation, the material must be degreased from the inside. Sealant, special glue or liquid nails should be applied a thin layer on the inner surface and then tightly pressed to the installation site. Excess glue immediately remove the cloth. Fix the material in the mounting position and leave it for 2 hours until the glue seizes.
Tip: If you have chosen liquid nails as fasteners, then it is better to buy them with a small or medium strength, since nails of strong strength can spoil the appearance of the plastic, leave it stains, spots of unevenness, destroy its structure.
If you took a very heavy material for finishing, instead of a special glue it is better to use metallic thin studs without hats. To drive them is very carefully. At first it can be done with an ordinary hammer, hammering the nail not to the end, and then using a rubber mallet to not damage the plastic. Take this step of the work very responsibly, as when nailing the plastic on the plastic may appear cracks. To avoid this, pre-mark the places where you will hammer nails, distributing them along the entire length of the structure. Try to drive the nails exactly, at 90 degrees. Remember that it is extremely difficult to remove the nailed corner, besides, the finish on the wall will be damaged.
How and what is attached to the arch
Rounded openings are quite a popular element in architecture. In smaller apartments, the spaces of two adjacent rooms are increasingly joined by the arrangement of rounded openings. Different in form, made of different materials, in the corridor, in the kitchen, in the interior partitions and deaf niches, they create unique shapes and fill a cozy home.
Drywall is the most common material for the arrangement of three-dimensional rounded structures. It is relatively light, freely bends and can take a variety of geometric shapes.
Such an opening can be assembled from gypsum board elements on a metal or wooden frame, which in turn is attached to the wall. To do this, in the chosen opening it is necessary to install a metal or wooden frame from vertical and horizontal profiles, to which the plasterboard will be attached in the future, to remove the dimensions for making the details of the decorative element. And then, having cut out the elements of the opening from the sheets of plasterboard, assemble the structure. It will be rough, requiring finishing in the form of plaster, putty and finishing coat. For the latter, the most diverse materials from water-based paint and wallpaper to stucco and stone. It is important to take care of strength and practicality in advance, reinforcing the corners with special construction materials. There are several ways of mounting, each of which has its pros and cons.
It is important to know that each fixing method has its drawbacks:
- liquid nails can cause stains;
- when fastened to metal brackets or thin carnations, the fasteners will be visible, which will affect the appearance;
- when twisting self-tapping screws, chips or cracks on the plastic surface may appear;
- when swiveling fasteners can be overdone, which will lead to excessive bending of the material.
Tip: Do not fasten the plastic corners for the arch to the wallpaper, no matter how good those are on the wall.
