A wood grinder is an indispensable tool for finishing work in a country house. The use of a grinding machine makes it possible to speed up the process of polishing and polishing wooden surfaces - wall, floor, furniture, decorative elements. Grinding machines for wood are convenient and compact, they allow performing quality alignment of any wooden surfaces.

There are several basic types of household grinders, their different design and operating principle determine their purpose. The following types of grinding machines are used for construction and repair, carpentry and carpentry:

  1. Belt sanding machines( LSM) - tools for aggressive and rough processing of wooden, plastic, metal surfaces.
  2. Vibrating sanders( GSM) allow for a softer treatment due to circular motions with a small amplitude. The grinding surface of the vibrator grinder has a rectangular shape, which facilitates the processing of corners.
  3. A variety of flat vibro-grinding machine is a delta-grinder, it differs in a triangular shape of the sole. The delta sanding machine is suitable for processing small and hard-to-reach areas, corners, recesses and depressions.
  4. Eccentric grinder refers to a tool that allows the surface to be polished to the polishing state due to the combination of rotational and vibrational movements of the grinding disc. But for the machining of small surfaces and internal angles, the eccentric grinder is not suitable.

Application of belt sanders

Belt sanders are used where it is necessary to quickly remove a fairly thick layer of material, for example, for grinding a non-planed board or removing old paint from surfaces. Also, the LSM is used to fine-tune the parts and process the cut line.

The material is processed using an abrasive tape, closed in a ring and stretched over rotating rollers. When moving, the tape removes a fairly thick layer of material, comparable to the work of an electric gun. The thickness of the layer to be removed depends on the grain of the abrasive tape.

When choosing a LSM, you need to pay attention to two parameters: the width and length of the abrasive tape used and the speed of its rotation. The width of the surface depends on the surface of the treated surface, the speed - aggressiveness and degree of processing. The standard dimensions of tape for LSM are as follows: 76x457 mm, 76x533 mm, 76x610 mm. The width of the tape for semi-professional grinders can be larger - 100 mm, but for household needs they are rarely used. The speed of the tape usually ranges from 150 to 500 meters per minute, power - from 400 to 1200 watts. Useful functions are a smooth adjustment of the speed of rotation of the tape and an automatic centering of the tape, which does not allow it to slide off the rollers even with rotational movements.

Abrasive tape for LSM can be of two types, with an abrasive layer of alumina or zirconium. Zirconia tape provides a deeper, but aggressive treatment, contributes to the appearance of scratches, which need to be processed using a less granular tape. For processing metal surfaces it is better to choose a zirconium tape, with its help it is possible to grind the cutting surfaces.

Surface treatment with belt sanders is carried out as follows: install the machine on the surface to be treated without distortion, and, without applying pressure to the machine, perform smooth longitudinal or circular movements on the surface of the material. If it is necessary to fine-tune the parts, grinding is carried out by short-time forward movements or by using a bounding box.

Application of vibro sanders

The principle of operation of these tools is similar: grinding is carried out due to light circular and vibrational movements of the grinding surface with an amplitude of up to 5 mm. As an abrasive material sheets of sandpaper with various granularity are used, fixed on the sole with the help of clamps or velcro.

Vibrating sanders provide high quality processing and are used for grinding almost any material: wood, plastic, metal, plaster and putty, as well as to remove corrosion products and old paint and varnish coatings.

The degree of processing depends on the amplitude of the oscillations: for rough processing, select the amplitude of 4-5 mm, for fine grinding - 1,5-3 mm. In domestic models, the speed of rotation is usually regulated in the range 2000-5000 rpm, and the speed of oscillation can be within 25000 per minute. The ability to adjust the eccentric amplitude, rotation speed and oscillations is a very useful option for GSOM.

An important parameter is the power of the GSOM, it is usually in the range of 150-600 watts. The higher the power, the greater the productivity and the time of the tool's continuous operation. Another important factor that determines the use of GSOM is the shape and area of the grinding sole. It can be square, rectangular or deltoid.

Application of eccentric( orbital) grinders

Orbital grinders are similar in principle to rectangular vibro-grinding machines, but they are characterized by higher productivity and a finer degree of grinding and polishing due to a complex oscillation trajectory. Surface treatment is carried out with a grinding disc with a diameter of up to 150 mm, special abrasive wheels with different grain sizes or grinding felt attachments are used as an abrasive nozzle.

The power of the orbital grinders is usually 200-650 W, the speed is up to 13,000 per minute, the speed of the eccentric oscillations is up to 24,000 per minute. Adjusting the number of revolutions and oscillations, as well as adjusting the amplitude of the eccentric, like those of GSOM, are very useful functions.

Use of orbital grinders

Using the orbital grinders

All grinding machines are characterized by the formation of a large amount of dust during operation. Some models are equipped with holes in the sole for collecting dust and a dust collector. This option is very useful when working indoors, so if possible, pay attention to models with dust collection. Also an important point is the length of the cord - with a short cord you will have to constantly use an extension cord. You can choose a battery grinder. When buying it is worth paying attention to the shape of the handle and the weight of the instrument, holding it in your hands for some time, testing the inclusion and adjustment modes.
