Non-woven wallpaper is becoming increasingly popular and is gradually replacing its paper counterparts. This is due to the presence of a number of positive properties: resistance to deformation, durability, the ability to hide minor defects of the base, the possibility of subsequent painting. Both the home master and the professional finisher need to know how to glue the non-woven wallpaper correctly.

Features gluing non-woven wallpaper

This finishing material is based on non-woven fabric - a non-woven fabric made from cellulose fibers.

Before starting work, you need to get acquainted with several important features of these wallpapers:

  • the canvas does not stretch and retain its original size;
  • the width of the rolls is often 700–1400 mm, so a smaller number of strips will be required to decorate a room than when using standard half-meter-wide wallpaper;
  • glued non-woven fabrics from the butt, without overlapping. An exception is gluing corners (but more often masters make a joint with a double cut);
  • glue is spread only on the walls or ceiling, the sheets themselves are applied in a dry form.

Gluing non-woven wallpaper with your own hands is easier than canvas on a paper basis.

Tools and materials for work

The necessary devices and materials include:

  • glue application roller (preferably with a long pile);
  • brush or brush for processing corners and hard to reach places;
  • a bucket for glue;
  • roulette 5-8 meters;
  • laser level or construction plummet (the simplest device can be made independently);
  • plastic spatula for smoothing strips;
  • knife;
  • sponge to remove excess glue;
  • dry rag;
  • pencil.

Particular attention should be paid to the preparation of glue: it should be designed specifically for non-woven wallpaper. The universal composition recommended by some consultants in stores has, as a rule, much less adhesion to non-woven fabric. When used in the future, the canvas may begin to depart.

Wall preparation

For quality wallpapering, walls should be prepared. Main steps:

  • Removing old paintings or paint. How to remove the old finish with minimal effort is written here. All methods for removing paint are described in this article. If the coating layer is very durable, then the surface should be treated with sandpaper of medium grain size.
  • Plastering - is carried out with significant irregularities.
  • Priming with deep penetration.
  • Leveling surfaces with putty.
  • Re-priming. Masters recommend instead of the usual primer to apply a thin layer of wallpaper glue to the walls.

Preparing the walls for gluing

In more detail, all stages of preparing the walls for wallpapering are described in this article. The rules for the preparation of drywall will be different, step-by-step instructions for GCR can be found here.

Before gluing the cloths on the non-woven surface, the surfaces should be completely dry.

Markup

Work begins from any corner of the room. It is allowed to glue the first sheet with indentation, for example, if the calculation of the number of blanks with a drawing according to the entire perimeter of the room showed that the final joint is better not to do in the corner, but the corners themselves are enough smooth. In any case, you need to glue the first workpiece as evenly as possible: all subsequent work depends on it.

  • A distance equal to the width of the wallpaper minus 2 cm recedes from the corner.
  • Using a laser level or a plumb line, a vertical line is applied to the wall with a pencil.
  • If the wallpaper is light, then do not draw a solid line, but make notes at the top, bottom and in the middle.
Wall marking with a plumb line

Similarly, they go through the whole room. Even if overlaps are made somewhere in the corners, these lines will help to orient in the correctness of the gluing, especially if the canvas with the pattern is selected.

Material cutting

This process looks like this:

  • A roll of non-woven wallpaper is rolled out and the height of one sheet is measured.

It is recommended to make an additional allowance of 3–7 cm, the residues will be cut after drying.

  • Using a ruler with a pencil, a cut line is drawn. On it, the canvas is bent, laying a roll on top, and smooth it thoroughly.
  • Next, with a knife or scissors cut the first workpiece.

  • Measure the height of the room at different points and, taking into account a small margin, cut the required number of sheets.

If the non-woven wallpaper has a pattern that requires docking, you need to find out the size of the rapport - the height of the repeating image. The length of the cut strip should be a multiple of this number, but be sure to exceed the height of the room.

  • The necessary margin in height will allow you to shift each sheet for accurate selection of the picture. To simplify the work, two sheets can be periodically applied together in order to check the consistency of the image.
  • Wallpaper cutting is always performed sequentially on one side of the roll.

At this stage, the main thing is not to make a mistake in size so that you do not have to glue the missing pieces.

Technology for gluing non-woven wallpaper on the walls

Step-by-step gluing instructions:

  • Diluted glue is applied by roller to the surface between the two lines. You need to capture a width slightly larger than the size of the wallpaper. This will help to stick to the joints well.
  • Brush the upper, lower edge and corner, as here there is always less glue.
  • The finished sheet of non-woven wallpaper is held at the upper corners, carefully applied to the wall and, starting from the top, is smoothed with a plastic spatula, but there is no need for strong pressure. Particular attention is paid to the exact correspondence to previously made vertical marks on the wall.
First strip mount

If the wallpaper has a deep texture, then it is better to use a wallpaper roll to avoid damage.

  • The remaining air and excess glue are removed with a spatula from the middle to the sides.
  • Protruding glue should be immediately removed with a damp sponge or rag, and then wipe these areas with a dry cloth.
  • The second sheet is glued butt to first.

Do not be afraid that gaps will appear at the joints: non-woven wallpaper does not change its size after drying.

Similarly, the remaining sheets are glued.

It is necessary to ensure that the glue on the wall does not dry out, especially in the places where the edges of the workpieces are glued, otherwise the sheets can come off.

For this reason, it is advisable to work with non-woven wallpaper quickly. When it is visible that little glue is applied, it is better to immediately smear this place by folding the sheet.

Trimming Tails

Cropping wallpapers is more convenient when they are already dry. The technique of smooth trimming is as follows:

  • a wide metal spatula is held almost vertically and pressed to the top or bottom of the wall;
  • the knife is carried out strictly parallel to the spatula, without tearing it, only the spatula moves.

Nuances of pasting corners

With perfectly even wall joints in the room, non-woven wallpaper can be glued with access to an adjacent surface. But this happens rarely. More often in the corners, the double cut technique is used:

  • The sheet is glued with an overlap (2–5 cm is enough).
  • A metal spatula is applied to the junction of the workpieces.
  • Both sheets are cut with a clerical knife.
  • After that, the cut off upper strip is removed. The joint will be smooth and almost invisible.

Features of corner processing

It is important to crush with a knife not too hard so as not to cut the putty on the wall, which may crumble, but not too weakly, otherwise only the top sheet will cut through.

  • When the procedure is completed, both blanks are pressed tightly against the wall, if necessary, additionally apply glue and smooth the joint.

When a drawing is joined, especially a large one, sometimes you have to glue the wallpaper from the corner in the opposite direction. In this case, overlaps are possible depending on the width of the workpiece.

Glue wallpaper around outlets

Do not make holes in advance for sockets and switches in the canvases, since it is difficult to calculate their location, and it will be more difficult to glue the sheet. It would be more correct to do this:

  • Pre-remove the plastic cases and turn off the electricity.
  • Glue the wallpaper blank and gently pierce the canvas in the center of the outlet hole.
  • Make small cuts crosswise and bend the pieces.
  • After finishing finishing work, fix the case in place.

How to paste non-woven wallpaper on the ceiling?

The technology for gluing non-woven wallpaper on the ceiling has no fundamental differences from the work on the wall.

  • When pasting the ceiling, it is advisable to get an assistant who will support the sheets.
Pasting the ceiling

On a note. Fishelin wallpaper is the best option if you have to work alone. Dry strips can be twisted into small rolls and just rolled them on the surface.

  • To mark the ceiling, a cord or rope is used, which is stretched between the indents along the width of the wallpaper from wall to wall.
  • The hole for the chandelier is cut in the same way as for the outlet: they pierce in the middle and make a cross-shaped cut. The ends of the canvas are bent into the hole, and the wires are let out.

If it so happened that the non-woven wallpaper does not want to adhere well and falls behind the ceiling, you need to additionally lubricate the canvases themselves with glue.

When can I paint wallpaper for painting?

The painting of non-woven fabrics is carried out after they have completely dried, after 48 hours from the moment of completion of gluing.

Different paints are used: water-based, latex, water-dispersed. For each of them, the corresponding roller is selected.

After applying the first coat, wait a few hours and paint the surface again, and if necessary, a third time.

The whole process of gluing non-woven wallpaper is presented in the next video.
