Modern materials for the interior decoration of houses and apartments include vinyl wallpapers with a non-woven backing. This is not an ordinary material, and the technology for working with it is different from gluing traditional paper canvases. Let's look at the important features of this coating and find out how to properly glue non-woven wallpaper.

Glue vinyl on a non-woven basis

Attractive sides of vinyl

Non-woven vinyl is a high-quality synthetic material. It is a two-layer coating:

  1. The base is a non-woven fabric consisting of cellulose fibers. Possessing high plasticity, it in many respects surpasses paper analogues. The material lays well on the surface, smoothes out and adheres to it. In this case, the adhesive is applied only to the wall.
  2. The front part of the vinyl wallpaper is polyvinyl chloride. This layer can be structural (made of foamed vinyl), smooth, large relief, hot stamping, with weaving of silk threads.
Canvas structure

Some of these wallpapers, specially designed for painting, can be repeatedly painted, changing the interior of the room. They perfectly hide wall defects and mask layout flaws. Vinyl canvases are used in interiors decorated in different styles. This is a functional material with high performance characteristics: it does not have to be changed for a long time.

Vinyl products are heavier in weight and larger in format. Rolls have different widths: from traditional 53 cm to 70, 100 cm. The length varies and is 10, 15 and 20 meters. The wide canvases after gluing give the impression of a seamless coating. Such wallpapers are more expensive than paper-based material, but attract consumers with their quality and excellent decorativeness.

Materials and tools for working with vinyl wallpaper

When purchasing vinyl wallpaper based on non-woven fabric as a wall covering, you need to take care of the selection of special glue. Conventional paste or composition for paper sheets is not suitable. Do not take universal dry mixes: they may contain components that are harmful to this coating. The accompanying instructions for using vinyl wallpaper indicate the type of glue that is most suitable for attaching the paintings to the surface.

For preparatory work before wallpapering and the main process you need to buy:

  • putty or other material leveling the walls;
  • primer composition;
  • soft and hard (rubber) rollers;
  • brush;
  • sharp clerical knife, scissors;
  • plumb.

If you do not have the skill to work with vinyl products, it is worth starting with canvases of the usual size: 53 cm in width and 10 m in length. Beginners are advised to use a monophonic coating without large patterns requiring adjustment. Only having mastered the technique of handling such wallpaper, you can try to work with large-format products.

Preparatory stage

Before gluing the wallpaper on the wall, the surface must be prepared.

  1. Remove old coating: Wallpaper, paint, or more.
  2. They clean the base of glue and widen the cracks.
  3. Apply a layer primers.
  4. Wall defects are eliminated using putty diluted to the optimum density.
  5. Again apply liquid primer.
Wall preparation

It is not necessary to smooth the surface thoroughly and make it absolutely flat. The selected wallpaper will do the job perfectly.

Cut the canvases

To properly prepare the material itself, you need to do the following:

  • Even at the stage of acquiring wallpaper, you need to verify the batch numbers. Otherwise, the tubes may vary in shade. If you overlooked and one roll does not match the others in tone, it can be used for pasting inaccessible places, above window or doorways, in corners. Where the color difference will not be striking.
  • With a measuring tape, measure the height of the wall, add 5 to it7 cm for allowances from below and above. This value is transferred to the wallpaper canvas and cut off the desired length. The following strips are verified with the first. If the products have an abstract pattern, they do not need to be customized. With large and small ornaments, a combination of lines will be required. Make it better on the floor, using 2 rolls at the same time.

Tip. It will be easier to align the strips glued to the wall if markings are preliminarily applied to the surface: vertical lines with a distance between them equal to the width of the roll.

Wall measurement

Preparation and use of adhesive

Nuances of working with glue for canvas based on non-woven fabric:

  • Adhesive for vinyl wallpaper is sold dry. Before application, it is diluted with water in the ratio indicated on the packaging bag. Its consistency may be slightly thicker than manufacturers require.
  • The main feature of non-woven wallpaper is that the adhesive mass is not applied to the canvas itself, as for other materials, only to the wall. For coating stability, the edges of the strips can be additionally smeared.
  • The composition deposited on the wall dries quickly enough, so you do not need to cover them immediately with a large area of the surface. For one, we need to apply glue to a fragment of the wall, slightly exceeding the width of the wallpaper roll. Guidelines will be the previously drawn marking lines.

Work with wallpaper

The process of gluing vinyl paintings on the non-woven will look like this:

  • They begin pasting the walls most often from the window, continuing to move clockwise. Other options for the "starting point" can be read here.

  • The segments prepared for gluing are rolled up or in several rows, so that it is convenient to take and transfer them to the surface.
  • The upper edge of the strip is applied to the wall greased with glue, leaving an allowance for the ceiling of 1.5–2 cm.
  • On a plumb line they compare how exactly the strip lies. If the wall was marked, this does not have to be done.
  • Rubber roller or a clean rag is carried out along the canvas, trying to fix it first in the middle, and then along the edges.
  • Making smooth, with little effort, movements, the tool is carried out throughout the cut of wallpaper from top to bottom from the middle to the edges. For smooth canvases, it is convenient to use a plastic spatula, for textural canvases - a roller.

Smooth Wallpaper
  • Carefully smooth the edges.
  • The next strip is glued “butt” to the previous one, trying to make sure that the paintings do not disperse.

Work in difficult places

Difficult to glue wallpaper are considered wall sections behind the radiators, in the corners, above the window and doorways.

  • Behind radiators to use integral cloths will not work. A strip of a certain length is cut into 2-3 parts in a wavy motion. Each piece is glued individually, trying as tightly as possible to press against the wall. Use a little more glue here. The surface will heat up, so a thin layer of the composition will dry too quickly, and the wallpaper will lag behind.
  • For corner coverings It is recommended to make gluing of two segments. The first canvas comes a few centimeters on the next wall. The other edge is glued over it. Both canvases are cut with a sharp knife, excess thin strips are removed.
  • The sections above the windows and doors are usually glued scraps remaining when cutting rolls.
