What is GVL?

Gypsum fiber sheet at first glance very similar to ordinary GCR. But if the last layer of gypsum is enclosed between two layers of cardboard by the principle of a sandwich, then GVL is reinforced over its entire thickness. To do this, manufacturers add digested cellulose to the gypsum mortar. GVL is significantly superior to conventional drywall in strength, but also weigh much more.

With the help of special additives, moisture-resistant gypsum fiber sheets are obtained, which is quite possible not only use for wall decoration in damp rooms, but also lay on the floor in ordinary rooms.

Gypsum fiber is similar to gypsum fiber in composition, but not in properties

Benefits of GVL flooring

Traditionally, a concrete screed or a wooden coating laid on a lag structure was used to equip the floors. Both methods have significant disadvantages:

  • Cement screed has considerable weight, and to fully dry it takes several weeks. Ceramic tiles laid on such a basis are not suitable in all rooms.
  • Wooden floors may dry out over time, leading to the formation of crevices or the appearance of an unpleasant creak. In addition, they are susceptible to rot and various microorganisms.

Installation of floors using GVL has many advantages over traditional methods:

  • Thorough preparation of the base of the floor, associated with kneading or applying various solutions, is not required.
  • The assembly of the coating from the HVL can be carried out even in a cold unheated room. The only condition for the microclimate is the absence of high humidity.
  • Installation of this floor does not require special building skills and does not take much time.

  • On the GVL, you can lay any floor material to create a finish: linoleum, laminate, parquet or carpet.
  • Floor operation can be started immediately after laying gypsum boards.

The base obtained with the help of GVL complies with all building codes, is fire resistant and environmentally safe. It is not as massive as a cement screed, which is important for the installation of floors in old houses or balconies. And less prone to defects after a certain period of time, when compared with lag wooden floors.

GVL also has certain disadvantages:

  • In the process of unloading, carrying and installing the GVL, you need to be careful, as the material is quite brittle.
  • GVL used for the floor, for example, moisture-proof Knauf Superpol 1200 x 600 x 20 mm, have considerable weight, about 20 kg.
  • Fairly high price moisture resistant GVL It is noted by many inhabitants as a serious drawback of this material. But if you calculate all the costs of arranging a cement screed or wooden floor, consider the work professionals, without which it is often impossible to do, and loss of time, this shortcoming will not be so significant.
The main disadvantage of GVL is the price

GVL from Knauf

In any finishing or repair work, it is important to use quality materials. For the arrangement of floors, many experts recommend the use of water-resistant flooring with moisture resistant 1200 x 600 x 20 mm produced by the German company Knauf. Over the years of work in the Russian market, she has confirmed the high quality of her products.

USEFUL INFORMATION:Repairing cracks and potholes in concrete floors

The manufacturer receives individual floor elements by gluing two moisture-resistant sheets. At the same time, they are slightly shifted relative to each other in two directions, which leads to the formation of folds with a width of 50 mm around the entire perimeter of the sheet. This design greatly simplifies the assembly of flooring, reduces the consumption of fasteners, and makes it easier to fit structures with complex surface shapes.

Each floor element has a size of 1200 x 600 x 20, a mass of about 18 kg and a useful area of 0.75 m2.

In addition to GVL, for installing flooring using Knauf technology, you will need:

  • Vapor barrier. This is usually a plastic film.
  • Knauf special edging tape for soundproofing floors.
  • Dry backfill. This can be fine expanded clay, sand or other material that does not shrink.

Before installation, all materials must be allowed to acclimatize to the room for several days. At the same time, they must be stored flat on a flat surface in order to avoid breakage of the material under its own weight.

Installation of floors from GVL

The installation process of the floor from the GVL is quite simple.

  • The base is thoroughly cleaned of debris (you can use a construction vacuum cleaner for this purpose), small cracks are closed, and then the base floor is covered with a deep penetration primer.
  • The floor level is marked. It must be strictly horizontal. Along the entire perimeter, lines are drawn that limit the backfill layer.
  • A waterproofing layer is laid. You can use plastic wrap or other materials. All joints must be glued with adhesive tape, vapor barrier is installed on the walls to the marked level.
  • Knauf edging tape is laid around the entire perimeter. It will not only provide sound insulation, but also prevent the destruction of hot water from temperature expansion. The tape is attached with a stapler or with tape.

  • Expanded clay, sand or other dry screed material is backfilled. It is easier to backfill on previously exposed special beacons mounted on plaster towers. Moving the metal rule along two neighboring lighthouses, level the backfill, after which the lighthouses are removed. Material is carefully added to the recesses remaining after them and finally leveled.
  • Cut sheets. Cut gvl it is possible with various tools, from a usual hacksaw on a tree to a jigsaw.
  • Stack GVL. Usually they start from the door and cut off at the first sheets the folds adjacent to the wall. Sheets are laid in a checkerboard pattern, gluing joints. After laying, the HLV is additionally connected through the folds using self-tapping screws, placing them in increments of 10-15 cm.
