Puttying drywall joints (video): how to putty seams

The final step in the preparatory work before finishing the walls with drywall with your own hands is their final alignment. Even those who figured out the installation, still have questions about further actions, the main of which is the plastering of the drywall joints. Non-observance of the standards during these works can lead to cracks at the joints of the sheets.

The need for seams

Puttying the joints of drywall is necessary to give strength to the weak points of the drywall construction, to obtain a uniform surface and to maintain its attractive appearance. Without such processing, the following problems may arise over time:

• A mesh of small cracks will appear on the finishing material, which will gradually expand.
• The service life of the finishing material will be significantly reduced.
• In connection with the loss of the finish of its original appearance, additional repairs will have to be made.

Materials, tools

First of all, for the correct conduct of work, it is necessary to select all the necessary materials and tools:

• Medium width trowel with a flexible blade for applying putty.
• Putty mixture, the choice of grade of which depends on further finishing work.
• Special putty for drywall joints.
• Perforated paper tape or serpyanka for reinforcing places where sheet joining takes place.
• Construction knife.
• Sandpaper to sand the layer after drying.

Proven specialized putties that can be selected for the initial processing (sealing) of joints: "Knauf Fugen”,“ Knauf Uniflott ”,“ Volma SOV ”.

If the scope of work is large, then a mortar with a nozzle and a construction bucket are required to prepare the mortar.

Preparatory work

First you need to prepare drywall for putty and choose the type of building material you need.

• GKL joints to clear of dust, check that there is no debris left in the gaps between the sheets.
• On the edges that have been trimmed, and on the direct factory edges, make bevels with a construction knife with a recess of 0.5 cm at an angle of 45 degrees. This procedure is required and it is necessary for the greatest adhesion of putty with drywall.
• Before you putty the seams, you must definitely check how the self-tapping screws with which the drywall is attached to the structure are recessed into the sheets. They should be screwed in no more than 0.5 cm, and at the same time, the hats should not protrude above the surface of the sheets.
• Primer the surface of the sheets. It is especially necessary to do this carefully in places where the putty will be applied. After such processing, it will be much more convenient to putty the joints of drywall. Dry seams and corners are especially carefully primed.

For drywall, the Knauf Tiefengrunt primer is suitable for highly absorbent surfaces.

• After applying the primer, it is necessary to wait until it has completely dried and primed the joints for a second time. The primer can be applied in any convenient way from painting with a regular brush to spraying. The main thing is that the layer thickness is uniform and not less than 0.05 mm.

Carefully applied Knauf primer or other suitable composition can reduce the amount of putty.

Deciding what putty to useare guided by two main questions:

• What humidity will be in the room. Putty for gypsum-based gypsum board seams, intended for dry rooms, in wet ones it will peel off.
• What will be the finish coating applied on drywall. Different types of mixture can be applied under wallpaper and under painting. In the second case, it is better to prefer polymer putty.

Surface treatment

After the primer, the first stage of putty begins - seam filling. This is a very important stage, and therefore neglect of the work can lead to further loss of time. The following actions must be performed:

• Knead the grout mix using the manufacturer's instructions.
• Putty putty hats of screws and recesses from them.
• It is good to putty the joints, applying the solution so that it penetrates deep into the seam. To do this, put an excess amount of putty on the seam with a spatula.
• Fill the entire length of the seam with mortar. With a large length, they must be divided into 3-meter sections.
• Gently pushing with a spatula, as best as possible to fill the mixture with the inner empty space of the seam.
• Remove protruding excess solution from the wall and allow the junction to dry.

The use of construction tapes for puttying joints

The joints of the Knauf drywall or any other are processed in several ways. The best option is a method using special tapes.

• Serpyanka for putty, or fiberglass mesh, easy to use, often self-adhesive, suitable for longitudinal joints, but experts do not recommend reinforcing with transverse joints, which are especially susceptible cracking. It has standard sizes and therefore is suitable for joints of any width and length.
• The paper tape is used especially strong, with fiberglass reinforcement and a special fold in the middle, which facilitates the filling of corners. With good moisture absorption after mixing with putty, the outlet gives a very strong reinforced joint.

Depending on the choice of material - tape or sickle - the technology of filling the seam will be slightly different.

Putty with Serpyanka

The work will take place in the following sequence:

• Putty putty on the joints to level the surface. When applying the composition, it must be pressed to fill it with voids inside.
• Sickle plate. The material must be measured and cut to the required length. After applying the putty layer, apply it to the solution in the place of joining the sheets of drywall, press down along the entire length of the seam. Then hold on the surface of the tape with a wider spatula, removing excess solution.
• After at least 12 hours, apply a second coat of putty. This time, you can use either a special filler for joints, or a regular finish.

The second layer is absolutely necessary, as the first one shrinks.

• After the solution has completely dried, it is necessary to grind the compound. This can be done with simple sandpaper or with a special nozzle for grinding onto a drill.
• At the end of the weld treatment, the entire surface is primed and putty.

Serpyanka can be glued even before puttying. In this case, the surface is thoroughly cleaned of dust, and a mesh is glued to the joints. When gluing, press it tightly so that there are no wrinkles. Putty for the joints should be applied over the sickle, pressing the material with a flexible spatula into the mesh cells and spreading along the entire length of the joint with a thin even layer.

Puttying a seam using paper perforated tape

The work is as follows:

• Stitches are being prepared.
• Ground connections are primed.
• The seams are filled.
• Next, it is necessary to putty the drywall joints, applying a thin layer of the mixture on which the tape will be held.
• A perforated tape is applied. When gluing it, it is necessary to pull it slightly, holding it exactly in the center of the joint, and then smooth it on the solution so that there are no bends and air bubbles. Press with a spatula, gently drawing it from the middle to the ends. Excess putty along the tape is removed.
• After 12 hours, a second coat of putty is applied.
• After complete drying, the surface is polished, after which you can proceed to puttying the entire wall.

If the joint is correctly filled and putty, the joint will be flush with the surface of the drywall sheets and will not stand out.
