Argon welding by yourself - equipment and work order

In life, there are different situations when you have to build something or repair. This is especially true for owners of private households, who always have something to do on the "farmstead".Often it is necessary to do bonding( joining) of metal products, therefore, without a welding machine, few people do.

argon But welding welding is different. Moreover, it should not be confused with soldering, tinning, and the like. The peculiarity of working with non-ferrous metals and alloys( for example, copper, aluminum, bronze), as well as alloy steel, "stainless steel" is that a conventional welding machine( whether gas or electric) is not suitable here.

Before considering the issue of argon welding, it is worthwhile to understand what it is. In general, this is something between the above types. Equal signs are the use of gas and the presence of the resulting arc. But the principle of action is somewhat different. The need for the use of inert gas( argon) is due to the fact that at high temperatures, alloyed steels and color metals interact with "O2" and other gases, forming oxides, and some are generally ignited( burn). For example, aluminum.

The presence of various impurities in the "welded" zone makes the weld unreliable. Argon, which is much heavier than air, simply pushes it out of the area in which the electric arc is located, thereby excluding the possibility of a poor-quality connection. In addition, a plasma is formed, which melts the metals to be joined.

Applied electrodes are divided into melting and non-melting( from tungsten).Argon-arc welding can be either automatic( any electrode), or manual( electrode non-melting).However, "folk craftsmen" do semi-automatons, although their capabilities are clearly limited. To produce "models" are used a variety of "details".The only thing that needs to be considered is the simpler, the safer and cheaper. Consider one of the options.

What is needed for welding

Transformer .Its power is selected depending on what you need to "cook".One of the secondary windings should be rated for voltage ~( 65-70) V without load. Recommendations for the independent selection of "iron" and the winding of windings are not clear to everyone, especially since the manufacture itself requires certain experience. It is better to use a ready-made transformer, designed for greater current( for example, from an electric "welder").

It is necessary to assemble a rectifier as well, since a constant voltage is used. By the way, its polarity plays a role and can change.

Burner. First it is necessary to choose a collet( clamping device) for Ǿ approximately 2 mm. To the other side of the clamp, to the holder, a copper tube is soldered, through which gas( argon) and voltage are applied to the electrode. Its diameter is about 6 mm. The solder is used high-temperature.

A working tube( ceramic, quartz glass) is attached to the other side of the collet. It should be easily removed to reinstall the wire. Its diameter is selected in the range of 8 - 10 mm, and length - 50. Inside there is an arc bent electrode, which is held by the clamping mechanism. On the tube, argon will enter the work area.

Assembling the "apparatus"

The holder tube is wrapped with an insulating material( fiberglass cloth), on top is a second insulating layer. Between them - sealant( silicone). It turns out the likeness of the handle of the revolver. It is attached to the micro switch, which will control the operation of the gas valve.

The burner is connected by a tube( diameter 6 - 8 mm) with a gas cylinder + 2 wires: from the button to the valve and voltage from the transformer( 8 "squares" are enough).

It should be noted that the flame in the working area should not disappear immediately, but after a while. For this purpose, in industrial models for argon welding a delay is provided for switching off. But in practice this electronic device only complicates the circuit, so this nuance must be taken into account and the shutdown done manually, with a delay.

This is one of the most budgetary options. Especially when you consider how much you will have to pay for an industrial device that is not used daily in everyday life. For your information: the gas cylinder itself will cost about 1,000 rubles, and one refueling - about 300. It's enough for a large amount of work.

Some sources indicate that you can use not only argon. This is not true. Practice shows that its content of less than 99% makes welding poor-quality.

According to those who already used argon arc welding, after it there is no desire to work with a conventional welding machine, as the seam turns out to be surprisingly thin and qualitative. You just need to practice.
