Gabions with their own hands

What is a gabion? Roughly speaking, it's a wire net filled with large cobblestones. Gabion walls look pretty attractive: a small height, they can serve as bumps and low fences in the area, from the tall will turn out beautiful fences. The installation of gabions at the dacha is possible as a base for benches, parking fencing and even simply a decorative wall for climbing plants.

In a garden or suburban area gabions can be done with their own hands and this work will not take much time. Mesh boxes for creating gabions can be bought in specialized stores: there are sold a sufficient number of modifications to satisfy any requests. But if you want to make a gabion, as in the photo, as much as possible budget, without spending a lot of money, you can make the box yourself, for example, from galvanized wire mesh and steel wire.

Step-by-step instruction for installing gabions with your own hands

Initially, the site on which the gabion will be located, is carefully leveled by a hoe. If the soil is loose, you can remove the top 15 cm and make a gravel layer.

If there is a danger that a weed can grow under the gabion so that it does not ruin the decorative design of the structure, you can spend a bit of time and dig a 10 cm deep groove along the border of the site.

The site for future construction is closed with a black weed film that is fixed by a boardin the guard groove. Now you can build gabions.

The welded masonry net in sheets with the largest cells is laid on the ground on the marked area. By the principle of "assemble the box" side sheets are laid on all sides, previously trimmed to the required dimensions and woven into a single structure with steel wire. Each end of the wire should be tightened with a pair of pliers so that it does not wriggle out.

Then the walls of the box rise and intertwine vertically.

Approximately every meter, transverse panels are installed and interwoven into the interior of the structure, which are necessary to ensure that under the weight of filling the grid do not bulge outward.

If it is planned to erect a high gabion, the corners of the structure and the joints with the transverse sheets can be reinforced with reinforcing bars with a diameter of 6-8 mm.

You can fill the gabion depending on your personal aesthetic preferences. For these purposes, pebbles, cobblestone, quarry stone, butes, coarse-gravel, etc.

The aggregate should not fall out through the cells. You can use a filler of different colors and even different qualities to create spectacular compositions. Stones need to be folded, picking up the shape, tightly to each other, and it is better to fill the corners with stones having a right angle.

The most ugly stones can be laid inside. The voids between large cobblestones can be filled with smaller stones.

If you plan to create a high fence of gabions, the first box is also mounted the second masonry grid, which forms the second layer. This box is also connected by wire, and cross walls are also mounted. Filling is carried out as well as at the bottom layer.
