The main techniques of decoupage technology

The main direction of renovation of interior and furniture is the attachment of a selected picture or image to the surface in different ways.

Decoupling techniques:

  1. Simple decoration. It is necessary to cut out the desired element from paper or napkins, apply it to the surface and apply a thin layer of glue from above. When it dries, you can open this place with a varnish. In this technique there is a mass of deviations. Sometimes the master wants to add something, he takes a brush, chooses the right paint color and manually draws some details to give the picture volume. Or artificially grows old, if necessary.
  2. The technique of "reverse decoupage" is slightly different from the traditional drawing of the figure on the surface. It is used for the design of transparent and glass interior objects, less often for furniture. What is special: the selected picture is cut out, glued on the back side of the object, and after drying, acrylic paints and a brush draw the picture elements manually to "manifest" the picture, make it alive and voluminous.
  3. Decoupage art - the technique of applying the elements of the drawing is the same( cut, glued), only if you want to achieve a single image over a large area, you need to draw individual elements manually, shade and draw shadows. The technique is very beautiful, but complex. Run colorful feathering is possible only by hand. Such work is considered expensive and exclusive.
  4. Technique "deco-patch" - belongs to the category "decoupage", it is executed similarly, only instead of a napkin or paper elements different materials are used. It can be like a special paper cloth, and paper for silk, plastic and glass. The surface of the object is completely filled with individual elements, creating a general background. Paper for decoration must be torn by hand, so that there is no clear boundary. What is the difference between simple decoupage and decoPatch: in the first case, cut out finished pictures are used, and in the second case - a certain section or the entire area is pasted entirely with pieces of decorative paper.
  5. Decoupage volumetric is an imitation of artistic painting, executed on a three-dimensional surface. First, the elements of the drawing( cut from special paper or napkins) are applied, and after drying, the drawing of each part is performed.

We continue our acquaintance with the basics of decoupage techniques, now consider the common effects:

  • "gilding" or gilding. As is done: a picture is cut from a napkin or special paper, glued to the surface, and then processed by a thin layer of metallic paint: for gold, silver or bronze. To obtain externally costly inlay for gold, use sheets of special material - gold leaf;
  • applying shadows with a brush and pastel paint. The paint is drawn with a dry brush, the boundaries between the lines of the pattern are masked to smooth out the sharp outlines;
  • coloring the pattern with colored paints, in order to give expressiveness and volume;
  • artificial aging of objects, decoration of antique furniture;
  • Craquelure technique - a special lacquer( one- and two-component) is used, which when cured creates cracks on the surface;
  • patination is the deliberate shading of certain areas on furniture or objects( places of frequent contact - edges and corners).

decoction

Each surface must undergo certain preparation before proceeding to work. For example, the glass needs to be thoroughly degreased. To do this, it must be washed, dried, wiped with a lint-free cloth and treated with a degreaser( to save material, workers often use a dilute, colorless dishwashing detergent).

Preliminary preparation is also very important for working with tin products. A special solution( water and vinegar in proportions of 1: 1) and a hard metal brush surface is cleaned of dirt, thus removing the top layer.

Wooden surfaces and chipboard furniture are processed with a fine-grained emery cloth to smooth out any irregularities.

Step-by-step master class:

  1. We offer to update the old kitchen furniture. We begin with the preparation of the surface. Do not skip this paragraph in any case - the qualitative preparation of the surface depends on the final result and the life of the furniture. Carefully inspect the surface to be treated. Let's say that you decided to update the kitchen corner - paste the selected picture on the stools and table top. Look closely at the surface, if there are cracks, they must be filled with a special grout, called the tool "Pore filler".It is very important - if the defects are large, then it is necessary to use the putty on the wood, fill the grooves, and after drying the funds, clean it with sandpaper. Wait until the grout or putty dries( preferably left overnight).After 8-10 hours, it is necessary to clean the surface of the kitchen furniture again with a fine grain grinder and apply a primer coat( on wood).We are waiting for the primer to dry, do not rush, as the pattern can lie not exactly.
  2. Prepare the selected image. So, while the layer of putty or primer dries, you can prepare fragments. To do this, cut out a napkin or paper picture, and then carefully remove the top layer( to work with napkins).If you have chosen a large drawing, then it is better to order a printout on a special printer( wide format) to paste a picture without joints. Try to cut out the drawing not by straight lines, but with a bend, rounding the edges. Then the image will look harmonious, especially if you chose a picture in dark colors.
  3. Application of glue: first you need to spread the glue with a glue so that the napkin or paper base is well impregnated. To work with napkins, try not to pour a lot of glue, as the paper becomes too thin and can burst. Now you need to impregnate the substrate with a glue and gently put the picture on the surface. Roller or brush( this depends on the size of the picture), you need to try carefully, without stretching the edges of the paper, align the picture, remove folds and swollen areas( air bubbles).Very important information: if you work with napkins, then PVA glue is suitable for this material, it does not need to be diluted with water. Well, if you chose a pattern on heavy paper or printed an image on the printer, then buy a special glue.
  4. Surface treatment with varnish. Do not rush, you first need to wait for the application to dry and only after that you can proceed to the final stage of decorating the furniture - applying varnish. It is necessary to open up the furniture completely( not only the area where there is an image).Wait, when the first layer dries, apply another layer of varnish, all layers must be 3, maximum 4. The interval between applying each layer at a minimum - 1 hour. Such painstaking work will help to secure the picture and extend the life of the renovated furniture.

Decoupage of polished furniture

We examined the option of decoupage of wooden furniture, and what if you do not want to part with the old polished chest of drawers? On smooth glossy surfaces it is difficult to glue a paper pattern, but this is quite realistic.

How to apply a paper fragment to polished furniture:

  1. First you need to use a coarse-grained emery cloth to remove gloss. Remove completely polishing is very difficult, this work is lengthy and laborious. It is important to try at least to properly clean the top to get rid of the gloss. Well, if you try and carefully follow all the recommendations so that there are no glimpses at all. Then you can count on a long "toe" pattern.
  2. If the furniture has defects: cracks, bumps and irregularities - all carefully fill with special grout or putty. We wait, when these sites dry up, we put a layer of a first coat, again we wait full drying.
  3. The polished furniture will not have such a beautiful pattern, like the furniture made of wood. Therefore, it is necessary to work with a primer so that the surface "starts to play".We use acrylic paint as a primer( we select the shade under the tone of the furniture).
  4. Cut out the desired fragment from the decoupage card or napkin and paste it with a special glue on the surface.
  5. Thoroughly brush or foam roller smooths the print to remove air bubbles and creases.
  6. Now I have to correct the background. We do this with acrylic paint and a thin brush. Draw the outline, if necessary - enliven the drawing with paint, drawing out the individual details.
  7. Finish the finished surface carefully - apply a layer of varnish as a fixer. We wait, when it dries, again we cover with a layer of varnish, we wait for drying and we repeat once again our actions.
  8. If you update furniture in the kitchen or in the bathroom, then it is necessary to apply the last layer of clear varnish, and then, when it dries, apply a thin layer of wax. This surface looks more impressive.

Here is the result of the efforts:

How to make decoupage furniture with a cloth

To work with fabric, you will need the same set of materials and tools, but instead of napkins or paper drawings you need to prepare tissue shreds.

tk

Let's make decoupage together with a cloth on a small bedside table:

  1. Prepare the solvent, as it will have to remove the top layer of paint from the bedside table, and then thoroughly scrape the entire surface.
  2. Then you need to cover the bedside table completely with acrylic paint( in this case it's a primer).
  3. Apply a layer of PVA glue to the surface and immediately prepare the adhesive for the fabric. It is best to pour a little glue into the container with a spray, add a little water( or purchase a special adhesive for the fabric).
  4. Cut out cloth or glue pieces of cloth with PVA glue. In this case it does not matter whether you use the same color material or have prepared several different colored scraps. Fantasy has no boundaries, so you can safely embark on the implementation of your plans.
  5. We are waiting for the fabric to adhere, we select this process for at least 40 minutes, after which it is necessary to sprinkle the fabric with glue using the spray gun, so that it finally sticks to the surface.
  6. Again postpone the work. We are waiting for when the cloth completely dries up and only after that we cover the furniture with transparent varnish in several layers( break - 1 hour).
