What is a primer?
First let's figure out what the primer is for, and what this mixture represents. The primer consists of film-forming materials( glue, resin, oil), drying accelerators, pigments and other substances. A building compounds are produced on acrylic, mineral, alkyd bases.
A primer is used to strengthen the surface( especially for loose and weak substrates), as well as for better adhesion with subsequent finishing material( plastering, painting or wallpapering).And it does not matter if your walls are made of metal, concrete or wood, they somehow must be primed for high quality of further painting.
To determine which primer is best, and which one is right for you, you need to know the type of substrate. For example, if you have a loose base, it is better to buy a deep penetration primer( for strengthening), if the metal surfaces are anticorrosive, and if the risk of penetration of moisture is insulating compounds. Primer types: for various surfaces
- Primer for concrete is divided according to the purpose of the concrete substrate( written on the package), often epoxy or polyurethane compounds.
- Alkyd compositions are used for wooden( especially well suited for untreated wood) and metal surfaces. The only nuance - this mixture should not be applied to the plaster and plaster base.
- Acrylic is made on a water basis, it is used for almost all types of walls( chipboard, fiberboard, wood, brick, concrete, asbestos cement, plaster, foam concrete).Not recommended for metal substrates( to avoid rust).
- Shellac mixture is made on the basis of milky juice of insects. It is mainly used for wood( knot insulation).
In addition, there is also the universal primer , which can be used for completely different surfaces. This is a good primer, and it is used in cases where the mixture you need is not at hand, or the base consists of several materials( brick and metal).
Kinds of primers: according to the desired effect
Depending on what requirements are imposed on the future surface, you can choose different formulations for processing. For example, in order to strengthen weak and loose walls( with crumbling plaster), it is sufficient to apply deep penetration primer .It nourishes the base, makes it more durable and reliable.
When antiseptic mixtures are desired to prevent the development of mold or fungus( in humid premises), is used. Their main effect is that they promote better adhesion( strong bonding of the subsequent material and surface).The binding is so strong that the "infection" simply can not seep through the joint.
anticorrosive compounds are used to protect the metal from rust. They are used not only for pre-treatment of walls during construction work, but also at home( when rust appears on the pipes in the bathroom).Plus, for many drivers, it is simply irreplaceable in the garage.
