Processing round logs - extend the life of the building

When is rounded log processing done?

This environmentally friendly and absolutely natural material - wood - for its durability, availability and ability to store heat has become quite common. Wood maintains optimum humidity, and also has natural ventilation properties. Even after processing the logs, these properties are preserved.

Before processing the round log, it must be allowed to dry. Natural moisture must escape from the wood, otherwise it will prevent the penetration of protective compounds into the wood fibers, and the treatment will not have any effect.

At first it is better to process only the ends with a special steam generating antiseptic. To prevent cracking of logs during drying, the ends are treated with lime or oil paint.

Types of log handling

Before processing the ends of logs, it should be noted that whatever composition is selected for processing, it must cover the end with a porous film, otherwise the log will rot.

There are three categories of compositions for processing logs of a bath, a house or other wooden structures: biosecurity, fire-retardant, moisture-proof. Today the market presents a wide variety of integrated protection products, that is, compositions that have both biosecurity and fire retardant properties.

Practice shows that comprehensive protection is in many respects inferior to the technology of stage-by-stage processing.

Antiseptic treatment with chemicals is performed to prevent contamination of wood or any biological effects. Mold, bugs or a fungus on logs at first glance are invisible, but they slowly and irreversibly ruin the wood.

The mold on the log is characterized by blue streaks. To remove it, it is necessary to process the problem area with a grinder or a plane, and then cover the log with an antiseptic. In the case of a fungus should be treated exactly the same.

All antiseptic liquids can be conditionally divided into two types: transport, they are short-term, and long-term. Before coating the rounded log with a flame retardant, it is recommended to perform a treatment with a bioprotective antiseptic.

Antiseptics for logs

Transport antiseptics protect the wood from the appearance of fungi and insects up to six months. These substances have a relatively low concentration of chemical protective substances, which means that they are cheaper. This composition is used immediately after wood processing with a cylinder machine.

This processing will allow the log to be transported to the construction site without the risk of picking up the fungus, and also installing it without the risk of infection. After installation, it is necessary to carry out long-term processing. Manufacturers of antiseptics claim that such treatment is able to protect wood for several decades.

For the protection of wood from fire, special fire retardant varnishes and impregnation-fire retardants are used, which practically reduce to zero the risk of ignition of a wooden structure. The most popular ways to protect wood with refractory compounds are spraying and dipping. For spraying, you can use a car mini-wash, a pump or a summer sprayer. The disadvantage of this type of treatment is the low penetration depth of the composition into the wood.
