We construct a hand winch with our own hands

Hand winch with its own hands is designed easily.

It may seem that making it with your own hands is very difficult, but in fact construction is based on simple laws of physics and mechanics.

Hand winches are now found everywhere: in construction, in personal farming, motorists willingly take winches with them to get out of impassability on the road.

Manual winch has its advantages:

  • compact, small size - fit in the trunk;
  • ease of use - no need to prepare for use;
  • mobility - can be rotated depending on the current task, creates effort in the horizontal and vertical projections;
  • versatility - its only task is to pull and lift the load. And where and what - is the difference great? It is only necessary to make sure that it creates the necessary tractive effort;
  • is easy to maintain: does not require complex and regular repairs.

Read our material, see the manual for practical assembly( including video) and you will understand that it is easy to make a winch yourself.

But for a start - a detailed excursion: varieties, the principle of operation, the device and actually the instruction for the steps.

Types of hand winches

The winch is used for moving the load by hand horizontally and vertically, with or without emphasis. There are 3 types of hand winches.

Lever

The rope winch with rope has a ratchet or ratchet mechanism, a lever and an important feature - it can work in a suspended state, does not need to be fixed to a solid base.

The rocking movements of the lever drive the ratchet mechanism. Such a mechanical winch has a built-in drum that does not unwind because of the clamps - cams.

The only drawback is a short cable( barely more than 6 meters).More importantly, its effort in traction: this figure ranges from 750 kg to 4 tons of effort. The permissible height for lifting is 4 meters.

Hand winch

Drum

The device of this version includes a support, a handle, a reducer, a drum. The drum may be serrated or worm-shaped. Toothed use is preferable, since such a drum wears out extremely slowly.

Sometimes such a winch is called a cable winch for the reason that it has a drum with a long cable. It works like this: rotate the handle, the rotation is communicated to the drum by a reducer, the drum in turn creates a pulling force.

This winch must always be securely fixed. Also, the drum winch has an important locking mechanism - a brake that works automatically in the event of a sudden drop in the load.

The drum winch reports tractive effort from 250 kg to 5 tons, while the length of the cable easily reaches 30-40 meters, with a thickness of up to 15 mm.

The thickness of the cable immediately extends the possibilities - the withdrawal of the car from the cuvette, lift the heavy reinforced concrete block to a height and so on.

Hand winch

Assembly-traction

This is a lever type winch, only without a drum. The body has jaw clamps, which create the required force.

Cams are located in parallel, therefore the force of pressure on the cable is distributed on all vectors equally, which means that the cable will eventually last longer.

Use the lever to lock the cams. The winch has a traction lever, which by means of a shear pin protects the entire mechanism from overload.

Such a winch is used most often, since it is technically more sophisticated and thought out for use decisively in all spheres of economic and construction activity.

You only need to periodically lubricate the mechanism, so that all its nodes work perfectly.

Hand winch: instruction

Before we start assembling a manual winch made of metal with our own hands by welding, pay attention to the old "grandfather" way that can help out when there is no mechanism, and to pull out, for example, a car from the dirt you need:

  • You will need a scrap,a piece of pipe, a cable;
  • We dig a scrap deep into the ground - it will be the axis of rotation;
  • Put a piece of pipe on the axle, which will be the lever. Of course, a pipe with a crowbar should form an angle of 90 degrees so that the impromptu axis can be rotated;
  • We fix the cable with a carbine to the scrap, and the other end of it - to the car fixing;
  • With the help of the lever( pipe), we begin to wind the cable on the scrap. At the same time, there is an important point that will facilitate work: the longer the lever, the less power you will spend on twisting the cable. Let the pipe - our lever, be a length of 1 meter, can be slightly shorter.

Such a winch, albeit improvised, exactly repeats the principle of operation of any other.

And now let's proceed to assembly of metal, using welding and additional spare parts. Our future winch will consist of: gear, shaft for winding the cable, bushing, handle and body.

Note the drawings - they show the recommended dimensions of all parts.

Now let's take a closer look at the accessories:

  1. gear-worm tells the torque to the shaft on which the cable is wound. It is necessary to pick up a thick enough detail with strong teeth - the safety margin will be much larger;
  2. the winding shaft of the cable - you can do it yourself with simple parts: take a cast cylinder from the metal( a piece of an old cardan shaft, a bushing from a dumper) and weld it on one side with an "ear" - a round sheet of metal that will fit the inner ring in diametergears. In the future shaft, it is desirable to drill a through hole - it can be passed through the cable and then fixed on the outside;
  3. bushing - needed to slide the shaft when rotating. If you constantly use the winch, it is better to put a rolling bearing, which, like the bushing, can easily be changed;
  4. body - it should take into account a very important nuance: all holes for fastening should be done taking into account the complete absence of gaps and the distance between the gear, shaft, handle and bearing / bushing.

The mechanism should work smoothly - not be shaky, but also hard-set so that the parts do not rub each other.

And now to the assembly of the winch itself.

Drawing winch

We prepare the case

We take a steel channel or sheet metal 4 mm thick. The body will consist of a short and long channels, bolted to both body plates.

Step by step:

  • We take two pieces of the channel - one 40 cm long, the other 30 cm. The one that is longer will be the right part of our winch, where there will be a pinion and a rotary knob;
  • We mark in the crawlers at one level the marks for through drilling - we will put the shaft in the resulting holes;
  • We drill in each channel also on an equal level 4 holes for bolt fastening with parallel plates of the case;
  • Take a sheet of metal, 4 mm thick and cut out 2 parts: they resemble a familiar rectangle, which in the lower right corner has a protrusion in the form of a triangle. In one such detail, we drill a series of holes that will be needed for attaching the winch permanently. Also in these two parts we drill through hole at one level - into it we will pass the shaft of the gear of Glist;
  • We put two bearings on the shaft of the Glyst gear( two bushings);
  • We put metal plates with a triangular ledge on the shaft of the Glyst gear and fasten them with bolts, spring washers and nuts;
  • We put the gear on the winding shaft. After we put on the metal bushing;
  • Insert the shaft into the long channel;
  • We put a short channel on the brass bushing and we also attach it with spring washers, nuts and bolts.

The winch is ready. We secure it at the place of destination - in the garage, at the construction site.

It is also possible to plant the winch on a pair of metal hoops that can be used as grips around the tree: they open the hoops, wrapped around a tree, fastened quickly with bolts and nuts - the winch is fixed to a tree.

The end of the cable is attached to the towing hook of the car and you can pull it out of the dirt in the field.

Pay attention to the video - it summarizes the whole process of assembling a simple manual winch.

Video:

Manual winch is a fairly simple design, the production of which is based on the calculations of the fastenings of its rotating assemblies.

Before assembling yourself, mark the points of future fastenings with the existing parts applied to the workpiece: you can understand it right away - where to mark where to cut off the excess, it can completely replace the bushing / gear.

Assemble in the specified sequence, and as a result you will get a fully working, simple device, but a very effective mechanism.
