Materials for foundation warming

The basic properties of the material that the basement of the house is warming are the low coefficient of thermal conductivity and the minimum water absorption. Moreover, the second indicator is more important, since the insulation is laid directly in the ground or on its surface.

Most often, the following materials are used to protect the basement of the house:

  • polystyrene;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • expanded clay;
  • plates from basalt fiber.

The best materials that do not need additional protection from moisture are foam and polyurethane foam. Polyfoam for these works is more profitable, as the insulation of the foundation is easier and cheaper.

In addition to minimal water absorption, the foam has a sufficiently high mechanical strength. Therefore, he is not afraid of the pressure of the soil, which is backfilling the sinuses. Polyfoam - an excellent material for insulation of the outer part of the foundation. It is easily mounted on concrete with glue or plastic dowels-umbrellas. The subsequent finishing of this material is also simple and convenient.

Inexpensive to perform the insulation of the foundation outside it is possible and with the help of expanded clay. This material has high rigidity, is resistant to temperature changes and is easy to use. The only condition for the normal operation of expanded clay is a high-quality waterproofing.

Ceramsite gravel has a porous structure, so it absorbs moisture well from the ground, while losing its energy-saving qualities. Therefore, its laying in the sinuses of the foundation must be carried out by first laying a layer of waterproofing from a synthetic film or roofing material.

Basalt fiber slabs are usually used for thermal insulation of the aboveground part of the grillage. Their installation is similar to the installation of foam.

How to properly perform the foundation insulation from the outside?

Protecting the foundation against heat loss requires a quality insulation of its buried and open parts. These works are best done at the stage of erecting the basement of the building, because then access to its buried part will be closed by a blind. The sheets of foam plastic can be glued directly to the bituminous mastic, which is coated with the walls of the socle.

Dowels for additional fixing of sheets should be used only on the outer part of the plinth, since from below the ground reliably presses the insulation to the foundation.

Carrying out the warming of the foundation walls with expanded clay, it needs to be covered throughout the outer contour of the building in the open sinuses. The thickness of the layer of claydite insulation should be from 40 to 50 cm for the entire depth of the underground part of the grillage up to its sole. Before filling claydite in the trench you need to lay two layers of strong film, leaving a stock of cloth for wrapping the heater from above.

Base insulation from inside

Insulation of the outer part of the foundation significantly reduces heat loss through its walls. However, we still have a large area under the building, which also needs to be protected from the loss of precious energy. In fact, the insulation of the foundation from the inside is the laying of the insulating material on the ground. There can be two options.

If the floor is wooden, on posts and logs, then it is necessary to cover the underground space with roll-up waterproofing and cover it with expanded clay to a height of 20-30 cm.

If the basement space is covered with reinforced concrete slabs, foam should be used. To do this, the sheets of this material are glued to the bitumen waterproofing directly to the underside of the panels. If the building has an exploited cellar, it is better to use a strong extruded polystyrene, laying it under a concrete screed.
