What is gypsum?

Construction gypsum is a fine powder of extremely white or light gray color, obtained by grinding and calcining( or, on the contrary, firing and grinding) of a natural gypsum stone. The advantage of this material over others is the very rapid setting and the same hardening.

The beginning of setting begins already after 5 minutes after its application. In some cases, these advantages can turn into disadvantages, therefore, in order to slow down the setting and hardening reactions, lime mortar, water-soluble animal glue, etc. is added to it.

Areas of application of gypsum in construction

In the process of hardening, this material is capable of increasing in volume, which is peculiar only to tensile cement, but, unlike the latter, our object of discussion is rather light material and can be used in interior finishing works.

Its undeniable advantages include environmental cleanliness, incombustibility, and the ability to "breathe".The disadvantage of the building material is its relatively low strength and water resistance, in addition, it is easily scratched.

This material is used for finishing plastering works, making any products, gypsum board, molds, castings, as an additive to other binders, arbolite, for ventilation boxes, etc.

Also by chemical means, or using traditional technology, gypsum is obtained with a high-strength .This is the material of the highest quality, used where all its unique characteristics are needed, and the strength of ordinary, construction gypsum is not enough.

Types of gypsum - why such a variety?

This material is distinguished by a large number of varieties. And each has found its practical application in life. There are the following types of gypsum :

  • Pure material in combination with a mixture of lime and blast furnace slags is called waterproof gypsum .In addition, to enhance the water resistance of products, it can be mixed with surface active organic additives( sulfite-alcohol bard).And the use of an aqueous solution of some resins( carbamyl), in the form of a quenching liquid, is able to provide sufficiently high rates of mechanical strength and water resistance;
  • Lightweight gypsum is produced by using in the processing of conventional raw materials, special technologies. This material is used in the manufacture of high-quality ceiling moldings and wall panels;
  • In the process of heating the feed to approximately 140 ° C, it is converted to a white or grayish powder. This material is very soluble in water, it is used to make high-strength, construction and other gypsum compounds. It can be said that the gypsum semi-finished product is a semi-finished product for further processing of this material;
  • Gypsum sour-milled is used as an additive in the manufacture of cellular concrete, aerated concrete, for soil treatment.
  • Fine-grained gypsum is needed in construction to fill joints, join slabs, trim, etc. This material is also called translucent type of gypsum. It is a part of building alabaster;
  • Architectural gypsum , another name - molding, is intended for the manufacture of stucco, decorative stone, restoration of facades of buildings, production of souvenirs and various forms.

The above examples are far from all varieties of gypsum, but, as can be seen from the written, it has firmly and permanently entered many areas of construction. This is due to its excellent characteristics and ecological purity.
