Creating a wicket from the corrugated board with your own hands

Many people are interested in how to make a wicket of corrugated board with their own hands, because this will save a lot on repairs.

Installing and manufacturing a wicket is not so difficult, and if you have minimal experience of repair work, then you will manage it yourself.

The best profile for the manufacture of wickets or gates is the corrugated board: it is durable, resistant to moisture, has a wide color gamut that will make the gate not only strong, but also beautiful.

Another plus - this material is not heavy, so the installation of the wicket will not be difficult.

In the article you will receive a step-by-step instruction on how to assemble swinging gates from corrugated board.

The photos, video and drawing below will help you to cope with this task, so that your construction from the corrugated board is not worse than that made by professionals.

Construction options and material selection

There are several ways to create a wicket from corrugated board, and most likely, each type of construction will look attractive, thanks to the properties of the material.

Swing gates are the most common. The reason is that they are easy to assemble by their own hands, and also they are quite beautiful and durable.

Swing gates, unlike the gate, do not require a large opening space, so they can be built even in small areas, or where the house is close to the gate.

Those who have more experience in repair work, can try to make a gate in the form of an arch. It is not easy to manufacture, but it looks very impressive - you can see on the photo.

However, beautiful can be a simple swinging rectangular wickets, because you can always add to the design elements of decorative forging, which will give the wicket an individual design and attractive appearance.

Beautiful swinging gates with elements of forging can also be made by hand, although this will be somewhat more expensive than the usual design.

However, here you can save on attracting a master: you can order metal decorative elements to decorate the structure and install them yourself - then creating a wicket will not take away a lot of money from you.

The dimensions of the built-in wicket should not be more than one meter, otherwise the design will be too heavy and will not fit into the space reserved for it.

If you want a larger wicket, you will have to pick up more stable and powerful pillars and loops. The height of the built-in wicket is no more than 2 meters.

For higher constructions, the frames are provided with a jumper from above that will allow to unload the supporting column and, thus, compensate for the impressive weight of the wicket.

The frame of the structure in this case is constructed from two support posts.

Before you start working on the wicket, prepare all the necessary tools so as not to be distracted by this in the future.

For work you will need:

  • sheets of corrugated board;
  • rectangular pipe, having a section of 60x4 mm;
  • self-tapping screws equipped with a rubber washer( match them to the color of the corrugated board);
  • loops;
  • lock( the lock can be hinged or mortise, of your choice);
  • level;
  • measuring tape;
  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • grinding machine;
  • scissors for working on metal( can be replaced with a hacksaw);
  • welding machine;
  • shovel;
  • gravel and concrete mortar.

To cope with work, even if you have little experience in construction and repair work, you will be helped by the video and photos below.

Stages of work

A drawing that reflects the size of the wicket is the first thing you will need to do to create a structure.

Since the dimensions of the wickets are standard, you can take a ready-made drawing, and not be engaged in making your own.

Next, you need to pick up the material from which the pillars of the frame structure will be made.

It is selected in accordance with the material of the fence - metal or wooden shields require racks made of a pipe.

For brick and stone fences, use brick or concrete to create poles.

Installation of all types of buildings is done in a concrete foundation, the depth of which should be the same as the depth of freezing of the earth - it is worth knowing this beforehand so as not to be mistaken.

The bottom for the foundation of the construction inside must be laid out with rubble and thoroughly tampered with.

Before pouring concrete, along the walls of the recess, you need to lay ruberoid or a film of polyethylene - this will serve as a waterproofing layer, and the construction will be more reliable.

Next comes the fabrication of the frame part of the structure. It is made of a steel pipe of rectangular size, having a section of 60x40 mm.

Wicket layout

Pre-clean dirt and rust from it with a metal brush, or use a Bulgarian with a special brush-circle - then it will go faster.

After cleaning, you can start making the right parts. With your own hands, this is done as follows: first trim the corners of the vertical ends, as well as the transverse elements from the top and bottom at an angle of 45 degrees.

Work with the elements does not end there - you need to ensure that the ends belonging to the middle cross member are installed perpendicular to the axis of the part.

Finished metal parts of the wicket need to be combined into a single structure with the help of a welding machine.

In order to avoid distortion in the product due to uneven heating of the tool, you need to make joints on all joints 2-3 cm in size.

If the wicket dimensions exceed the standard, then the connections must be made more rigid with the help of special scarves - the parts having the shape of a right triangle.

Their legs need to be welded with adjacent parts. On the finished frame you need to weld the hinges, handles, so that the wicket is convenient to open, as well as the plate on which the lock will be installed.

After the welding work is completed, the structure must be cleaned of scale and coated with a compound against corrosion. The last step is the priming and dyeing of the gate to the color of the gate.

When the fabrication of the frame for the wicket is finished, it is necessary to coat it with profiled sheeting.

If you have not done this before with your own hands, then watch the video as it is done before proceeding to the plating.

To cut the corrugated sheet, use a hacksaw or scissors to work with metal.

It is better not to use the bulgark, tk.it will damage the anti-corrosion coating, and the structure will be susceptible to corrosion. The crests of each of the waves must be equipped with self-tapping screws.

Screw them without pressure, so that the rubber gasket is not fully pressed. If it is too deformed head of the samoreza, it eventually cracked and it will have to be changed.

Installation of the lock

The lock for the wicket is installed at a height of 90 cm from the ground.

You can use an overhead lock - in this case, the design is installed on the inner side of the wicket, while the fastening hole should be similar to the middle cross member of the frame, and the core should be higher or lower.

The holes for the core are drilled on the contour, and then finished with a cutter. To fasten the lock, you need to make a hole for the screw - it is cut out with a drill and a tap.

You can also make a mortise lock with your own hands, it will be somewhat easier.

To do this, a rectangular frame frame is installed, pre-drilled in the tube several holes for fasteners.

Installation of the wicket

Installation of the structure on the hinges - the next stage of work. To do this, you need to weld the hinges on the support post so that there is a clearance of 100 mm between the lower part of the wicket and the ground.

If your posts are concrete or brick, then the loops need to be welded to the embedded plates.

On the second rack you need to install a bump - it is needed that the design swing open only in the right direction.

Here you also need to make a notch for the bolt lock.

To select its location, put on the rack putty or other traces of material, slam the gate and close the lock - where the imprint remains, and you should make a groove.

For him, you can drill a hole on the contour, or make it a bulgarian. If you chose a Bulgarian, then make a vertical and diagonal slices that connect their opposite points.

So you get two triangles that you need to bend and cut.

How to install loops, cut locks and conduct other work, you can see on the video in the article - use it to clarify for yourself the incomprehensible moments of working with the wicket.

And the wicket from the corrugated board, and the swing gate need, from time to time, to clean the dirt. But do not use solvent for these purposes, becauseit destroys the anticorrosive coating of corrugated board.

The usual soap solution is suitable for cleaning. To lubricate the hinges and wicket door lock, engine oil or salt oil will suit.

To prevent the construction from sticking, you need to lubricate the hinges and the lock all the time. The corrugated board does not need coloring - it's enough to choose its color under the swing gates.

To make the structure look organic, buy material for the gate and gate at a time. However, you need to paint metal posts.

If they are made of bricks or concrete, then only the embedded parts are painted. Update the paint should be once a year.
