How to properly process wood with copper sulfate?

Copper sulfate is a common remedy in the fight against mold, fungi and rotting of a tree.

Its popularity is caused, first of all, by availability: it can be purchased at any hardware store.

Most often, the solution is used in everyday life, it processes trees, leaves in the garden at the dacha.

The main reason for the rotting of a tree is its origin.

Wood is a natural material, capable of breathing, secreting juices, thereby increasing its moisture content.

Even treating the wood with paint, varnish or any other coating, it will not be possible to avoid the internal rotting process. Therefore, very often resort to the processing of wood with copper sulfate.

Copper sulfate, in addition to its availability, has other positive characteristics. This product is not a combustible, volatile substance. Absorbing, for a person the substance will not do harm, but it is necessary to work with it in gloves.

Another feature of copper sulfate is that it is able to corrode metals.

Therefore, when processing the tree, you need to check that it does not have nails, clamps or any other metal objects.

Also this information should be considered when diluting the solution, respectively, the bucket should not be iron.

So, the preservation of wood occurs with the help of a solution of copper sulfate, and with its help it is possible to treat diseased trees.

How this is done, in what ways - about everything in more detail.

Methods for treating wood with copper sulfate

The simplest way to treat wood with copper sulfate is its surface treatment. This method consists in applying a solution to the surface of the tree. It is really simple, but also not durable.

This treatment is applied from mold, fungus, that is, already damaged wood. Moreover, wooden products should be dried well. Otherwise, the solution will be washed out at a higher rate.

Processing with copper sulfate

The solution can be prepared as follows: 10 g of copper sulfate dissolves in 1 liter of water.

It is better to use warm water, and the antiseptic itself is sieved through a sieve( in dry form), dissolves in a small amount of water, only after that it is poured into a prepared container with the necessary volume of water.

Due to its aqueous component, the antiseptic does not have the ability to penetrate deep into the wood - a maximum of several millimeters.

Over time, the wood dries up, moisture forms, and the solution is washed out, the appearance of rot and fungus is inevitable. But I must say that harm to microorganisms is still applied.

The second way of processing is that the wood is soaked in the solution. To this end, a twenty percent solution of copper sulfate is diluted, and a large container is filled with wood.

This method is not suitable for processing boards intended for construction. It is convenient for soaking pillars, which are planned to dig into the ground. In such cases, the consumption of the solution will be acceptable.

Soaking takes place for two days, after which the poles are dried naturally under the canopy, placing the treated place up. Drying should last at least one month.

Copper sulfate

If you have to process freshly sawed wood, then you can use the third method.

Why fresh wood? Because this method allows copper sulfate in order to get rid of pests to mix with the tree juices.

What it is: a freshly cut tree is put on the ground, sawed in half, but not completely. A wedge is inserted into the formed gap, by means of which it is necessary to enlarge the slit.

In this slot one end is inserted into the lead tube, the other into a solution of copper sulfate. In this case, the antiseptic should be on a hill.

If necessary, the gap can be sealed with resin, so that the solution goes directly to the inside. Thus, the juice is mixed with the solution for 3-5 days. After that, the wood is dried.

How is wood impregnated with vitriol in the industry? The wood is well dried and placed in an airtight container.

Impregnation of wood

Then the material is covered with a hot solution( 40 degrees), after which the container closes. At a pressure of 10 atmospheres, the wood is impregnated with the solution for half an hour and then dried.

To use this method at home is simply unacceptable, but for construction, the material treated in this way will be well protected against pests and mold.

Application of copper sulphate in horticulture

A solution of copper vitriol is actively used by gardeners. This antiseptic can get rid of not only rot, but also of all pests.

This tool also allows you to treat already damaged trees and restore the lack of copper.

Treatment of trees in the garden, most often, is done by spraying.

In general, I must say that in gardening this antiseptic is used not only against pests and fungus, but also as a fertilizer, for whitewashing tree trunks, against scab and lichens, and, of course, for prevention.

There are rules for spraying trees:

  1. If you need to treat a tree or disinfect it, then a strong solution is used, that is, 100 g of vitriol is taken per 1 liter of water;
  2. Other proportions are used for spraying from pests. Processing is carried out twice a year. In the spring, during the period of nucleation, a 1% solution is used. In autumn, when the leaves have already fallen, you can use a five percent solution. Why so? Because, falling chemical substance on the leaves, you can burn them, respectively, to destroy the plant;
  3. Once a summer, it is possible to process trees for pickling pests by adding lime to the mixture and treating the trunks with a ready solution.10 liters of water are diluted with 300 grams of vitriol and 400 grams of lime;
  4. Against various diseases of grapes, bacterial cancer, spotted necrosis, is treated by spraying with a five percent solution twice a year: in spring and in autumn. In order not to burn the leaves, do not make a stronger concentration.

Trees can be conserved in any other way, without the use of copper sulfate. But this method is considered a classic, time-tested.

Copper sulfate as a fertilizer

Iron vitriol, in addition to the properties of antiseptic, is used as a fertilizer for plants.

If the leaves of the plants begin to turn yellow, then the flowers lose their color and attractiveness, the shoots begin to fall off, then it is just necessary to feed the trees.

Iron vitriol has an available "soluble" iron, which saturates the leaves and the entire plant as a whole with useful elements.

Fruit fruit trees especially feel the lack of iron.

Therefore, if the horticulturist finds an old iron object on his site, he does not hurry to throw it away - he puts it next to it or bury it near the tree trunk.

But this method is ineffective, since an iron object for a tree remains difficult to access.

As a fertilizer, you need to prepare the following solution: 5-10 grams of copper sulphate should be diluted in 10 liters of water. The water must be soft at the same time.

This method is used for foliar top dressing of potatoes, cabbage and tomatoes.

Precautions

Because the antiseptic is a strong chemical, after spraying it is necessary to wash your hands, rinse your mouth and wash your face.

It will not do a lot of harm, but it's better to be warned against unnecessary troubles.

If, however, the substance has been harmed, it can be understood by such signs as:

  • nausea, vomiting;
  • heart palpitations;
  • weakness;
  • stomach pain;
  • itching, rashes, redness on the skin.

Based on the foregoing, it can be concluded that copper sulfate causes damage not only to parasites, but also to humans.

But in order to poison this substance, you need to spend a fairly long amount of time, contacting it.

Therefore, for the treatment of wood with copper sulfate, the following protection of the human body will be required:

  1. it is necessary to work in rubber gloves;
  2. with a planned long-term spraying( spraying) it is necessary to use a respirator( gas mask);
  3. must be completely protected from clothing by skin contact with the substance;
  4. if the treatment is done indoors, then it should be well ventilated;if in the street, then sprinkle the trees with the wind. Harm to the respiratory organs of man will not be inflicted.
