Before we start to glue the wallpaper on the

paint. Below we return to the question of how to glue the wallpaper on the paint, but first you need to determine what type of paintwork was used previously on the walls - water-based or oil-based. To simplify the task, we give here the characteristics of these materials.

  • Water-based paints, as the name implies, have a water base and when dried they densely impregnate the wall surface. Such coatings do not smell, penetrate well into the structure of the wall and repel moisture.
  • Oil paints have a more stable structure, have a smell, well settle on the surface of the wall, moisture resistant. When applied to the wall, a continuous protective layer is formed.

To determine the type of paint that was used, take a spatula and remove part of the coating. If the material has a structure of the cake, that is, it is separated by layers from the wall - this is an oil paint. If the coating is firmly connected to the wall, as it merged with the top layer of concrete - it is a water-based coating.

How to paint wallpapers on water-based paint

Sticking the wallpaper on water-based paint requires preliminary preparation of the walls, otherwise the canvas can very quickly fall behind the surface. First of all it is necessary to neutralize the old layer of paint material. To do this, prepare a mixture of solvent and primer in a ratio of 1: 1 and this composition is applied to the surface to be treated. The solvent, which is part of the mixture, partially corrodes in the old coating, allowing the primer to penetrate the wall structure and provide a new finish with a reliable connection. After - the walls are allowed to dry and a layer of a clean primer is applied from above. This method allows you to get a rough surface, necessary for good adhesion of wallpaper to the wall.

After drying, the wallpaper is applied directly to the paint. To this end, prepare a special composition, in equal parts consisting of PVA and wallpaper glue. It is applied both to the primed wall and to the wallpaper.

Painting wallpaper on oil paint

Oil paints are very tenacious and can keep up with the walls for years. But in our case, all the complexity lies only in the fact that the paint layer has a very smooth surface - this prevents good adhesion of wallpaper to the wall. Therefore, if you need to glue wallpaper on oil paint, you must also do the preparatory work. There are two ways to prepare a wall covered with oil paint, to wallpapering.

  1. To obtain a suitable surface for bonding, it is necessary to treat the wall with a large emery, and apply a mixture of primer and PVA glue to the sanded surface in a ratio of one to one.
  2. Use a spatula every 20 cm to remove the layer of paint horizontal strips( 5 cm wide), then apply the putty on the treated areas to align them with the rest of the surface. These strips are designed to ensure a reliable grip of the panel with the wall. This way to glue wallpaper on oil paint is less effective, but also has the right to exist.

Repeat how to paste wallpaper on the paint, we will not - the sequence of actions here is the same. The only difference is in the composition of the adhesive solution - when gluing on the oil paint wallpaper paste take twice as much as PVA.

After completing the above steps, you will get a reliable result. The wallpaper will hold tight, delighting the hosts with a new interior.
