How and with what materials it is possible to insulate a sewer pipe in the ground

Many people are careless about the insulation of sewage pipes, believing that the pipes themselves have a sufficiently high temperature, which will prevent them from freezing. In fact, everything happens quite differently, and the pipes in winter often freeze. In the best case, you simply will stop working sewage, because of the overlapping of pipes by frozen masses, and you will have to use an old toilet on the street, like a summer cottage. Pleasant little. And in the worst case scenario, the sewerage pipe will simply burst, as it is known that the water expands upon freezing, and in this case the problem will be more serious than visiting the summer toilet - the sewerage will have to be repaired and replaced.

So, how is the sewage pipe insulated?

Ways of insulation of the sewerage system

Bury the pipes below the freezing level of the

soil. In this way, everything seemed to be simple - dig a sufficiently deep trench so that the pipes are below the freezing level of the soil - this depth is individual for different climatic regions of our country. At this depth, the temperature is always constant, and the pipes will not freeze. However, in the application of this method problems may arise:

  • does not always manage to dig a trench of such depth;
  • repair of sewage pipes in case of leakage will be much more difficult to implement;
  • in some areas of Russia the depth will be very large.

The advantages of this method are the absence of waste for insulation.

Use of heaters for sewerage

This is the most common method. As the thermal insulation, traditional insulation materials such as glass wool, basalt insulation( basalt fiber), expanded polystyrene, asbestos and other materials are used. The main requirement for a sewage pipe insulation - the material must have sufficient thermal insulation properties to ensure a positive temperature of the pipeline in winter.

The installation of a heater on the sewage pipes is quite simple - if a special insulant for sewerage is used, two halves of the so-called heat-insulating shell are put on the pipe and fixed with a small overlap with tape or clamps.

 The advantage of using a heat-insulating shell is that it can also be easily dismantled if a sewage repair is needed. If you use a conventional insulation, then it is laid with a foil side on the pipe, wrapping it, and also fixed with an adhesive tape. For better thermal insulation, the pipe can be covered with sand.

Heating of sewer with heating cable

This method is used in case of insufficient efficiency of the previous two, for example, in the conditions of the Far North. A heating cable is laid along the pipe, which ensures a positive temperature in the sewage system. Of course, the heating cable is laid under the heater, otherwise it will warm the ground, and not the drain.

Actually, these are all the main ways of warming the sewer pipe in the ground. Also I recommend to watch video on installation of the water drain and its warming:
