One of the main elements of a gas water heater is a heat exchanger along with a burner. And so problems with this detail can worsen the quality of the column or even damage the device.

Purpose

Such an element of a natural gas-powered water heater, as a heat exchanger, is needed to transfer heat from the gas burned in the apparatus of the gas flowing inside the metal pipes.

Materials

The most commonly used for the manufacture of heat exchangers are steel( different types) and copper.

The steel heat exchanger features these features:

  • Costs less than copper.
  • The material is very ductile, so it tolerates heating well, without changing its physical properties.
  • Differs relatively low weight, which has a positive effect on the heat transfer efficiency.
  • Greater corrosion resistance than aluminum and copper.

The copper heat exchanger has such properties:

  • Thanks to its high heat transfer coefficient, it heats water much faster.
  • The less impurities, the more expensive this metal will cost.
  • Due to the presence of impurities in a poor-quality copper heat exchanger, the walls will heat unevenly, which in time will lead to their destruction.
  • Copper is noted for its high resistance to corrosion.
  • To reduce the cost of parts, many manufacturers resort to a smaller wall thickness and a small cross-section of the tubes.
  • The copper heat exchanger weighs about 3-3.5 kg.

What is more profitable - repair or replacement?

If you take into account the cost of a new heat exchanger and work to replace it, and then compare it with the price of a new column, not forgetting the costs of its delivery and installation, it is clearly visible that such repairs are more beneficial than replacing the entire column. On average, a new part costs 3000-5000 rubles, and for installation it is necessary to pay about 3000 rubles. Thus for a new column it is necessary to pay from 8000 rubles and more, and then still to pay its connection.

Soldering the gas column heat exchanger

The life of the heat exchanger installed in the column is largely influenced by the welding of its pipes. To extend the service life of soldering parts, solder MF9( copper-phosphor) is most often used. A more modern welding method used by leading companies is ultrasonic brazing. With it, the connected structures are heated evenly, which eliminates the subsequent destruction of the heat exchanger in places of soldering.

Often a gas burner is used for soldering, this process is shown in the following video.

How to remove?

Before dismantling the heat exchanger, the column must necessarily be disconnected from both the gas supply and the water supply. Further, having removed a cover on the case of the device, disconnect the heat exchanger, having turned off fixing its self-cutters, the gauge of an overheat and nuts connecting a heat exchanger with a hydraulic group. Now it remains to carefully extract the part from the column.

The dismantling process is clearly shown in the following video.

How do I clean it?

As the scale begins to form and collect in the interior of the heat exchanger over time, especially if the water entering the column is stiff and heated to a high temperature, then the cleaning of this scale is included in the list of regular maintenance of such equipment. It is recommended to be conducted about once a year, and if there was a need( the column became worse to heat water), then even more often.

At home, food citric acid is considered the best choice for cleaning, since it is an inexpensive and common product without a pungent odor. Do not forget to protect the body when cleaning the heat exchanger, so prepare gloves and appropriate clothing in advance.

Then proceed as follows:

  • Dissolve the powder from a large package of citric acid( 100 g) in 350-1000 ml of water.
  • Gently pour the solution into the heat exchanger with a funnel, then put the part in the container and leave it for 15-60 minutes.
  • For more efficient cleaning, it is also possible to preheat the capacity on the plate to + 60 + 80 ° C.
  • Next, rinse the part under running cold water, wait until it dries completely and install the heat exchanger back.
