What should be a good paint for brick?

To choose a mixture that will serve for a long time, it is necessary to consider the requirements that are imposed on it. These requirements can be divided into three groups: technological, decorative and operational.

Technological properties:

  • Consumption is the amount of paint that is used to cover one square meter of the surface. It depends on the type of coverage, texture and properties;
  • Painting data. Good paint should be easy to apply and be easy to use;
  • Drying speed. This indicator depends on the temperature at which the work is carried out.

Decorative properties:

  • Reflectivity. This factor affects the ability of the wall to reflect light. Surfaces are glossy, semi-glossy and matte. Glossy create a durable layer that is easy to wash. However, it detects all minor defects, so that the surface must be perfectly even;
  • The possibility of tinting, that is, mixing different colors to obtain the required shade.

Operational properties:

  • Light fastness - the ability not to fade under the influence of sunlight( if the brick wall is painted on the street);
  • Adhesion - the ability of good adhesion to the surface;
  • Resistance to atmospheric influences.

Important! In addition to all this, the paint should be strong and well tolerated mechanical damage.

Which composition is better?

Paint for brick walls is divided into water-soluble and based on organic solvents. Water-soluble are most often used when painting brick walls. Their advantages include vapor tightness, fire safety and absence of unpleasant odor. Often such colors are white and if necessary, they are shaded to the desired shades. From the basis on which they are performed, they can be divided into silicate, with silicone resins and dispersive.

The most common for brick walls are acrylic blends. They are made on the basis of resin. Its layer has poor water absorption and resistance to contamination. Acrylic-silicone paints are considered a better option, since they possess the properties of both acrylic and silicone compounds. These paints are resistant to mechanical impact and do not get dirty. Glue compositions are also used, but they can not be used in rooms with high humidity, since they do not tolerate it.

Tip! Determining what color to paint the brick, be sure to take into account the peculiarities of the room in which the work will take place.

What else should I know?

The color of the brick has its own characteristics. So, the surface can not be primed, but experts still recommend using an acrylic primer to ensure better adhesion. The wall is covered with one coat of primer. For its application, and in the future and painting, you can use a spray gun, as this will give an even coverage over the entire surface. If there is no atomizer, then you can use a brush or roller.

When using a semi-matt mixture, it is necessary to apply two layers to ensure a high-quality coating. Also, remember that the glossy coating visually expands the room, making it more voluminous. Matte coating is used when good resistance to mechanical stress is necessary.

Tip! It is desirable to paint brick walls to choose compositions that freely tolerate high humidity. This will allow you to regularly wash the walls, so that they remain externally attractive.
