Decoration of joints by gluing the ceiling skirting

When the wallpaper is pasted and the ceiling is decorated, it becomes necessary to decorate the junction line between them, and the question arises: how to glue the ceiling skirting board?

Decorative ceiling skirting is a strip with an extruded pattern.

It is also called baguette, frieze or fillet.

Actually, the plinth acts as a visual combination of the area of walls and ceiling into a single whole. In old houses, his function was performed by plaster molding.

With its operation, there were many problems - it quickly lost its color, and it was often necessary to whitewash it.

When a piece of stucco was broken, the whole jumper between the wall and the ceiling lost its appearance.

Stucco was difficult to replace with their own hands, since it was required to conduct work that would heavily pollute the interior.

Of course, to restore the stucco tried to apply shpaklevku, but the result was not always successful and required skill.

Not so long ago, an easier-to-work paper version came to replace the plaster moldings. The line of intersection of walls and ceiling was pasted with a panel - a paper strip with a width of 1 to 5 cm.

Although the design that was created by its gluing was doubtful, but there were no other options to visually align the joint.

With strong changes in height, the panel swirled from the bottom to the top and rather emphasized unevenness, instead of hiding it. Even in modern houses with even walls, it is not always possible to glue a panel.

For example, a stretch ceiling in combination with a panel will lose its design. In recent decades, finishing work is done with the help of a modern decorative baguette.

It is applied to any surface of the ceiling, whether it's plasterboard, stretch or ceiling with wallpaper. Consider how you can glue the baguette with your own hands and offer to watch the training video.

Preparatory work

In order to correctly choose a ceiling skirting, we will find out the differences between the two most popular materials for its manufacture - foam and polyurethane.

Foam plastic bags are lighter in weight, which makes the installation convenient. They are much cheaper than polyurethane ones.

However, fillet made of polyurethane can be used in rooms with high humidity, for example, in the bathroom, where the foam plinth quickly lost color.

If the room has a significant difference in the height of the walls, then sticking the foam is also difficult - fragile material can crack.

But the flexibility of polyurethane in this case will have to come in handy.

Therefore, the choice of material for the decorative ceiling is better to perform, based on technical conditions and financial capabilities.

The next step before buying a skirting board is measuring the room.

The standard length of the strip of plinth, regardless of whether it is made of foam or polyurethane - is 2 meters.

Large selection of ceiling skirting boards

We measure the length of each side and divide it by 2, the integer is the number of whole strips, and the remainder of the division is subtracted from 2 and write down the resulting number. This is a strip from which there will be a surplus.

If it's not too small, then we can apply it on another wall. Thus, the first wall will require the resulting integer number of strips plus one more.

When calculating the number of skirting boards for subsequent walls, take into account the available residue.

Such a calculation scheme will help minimize the balances and, accordingly, the financial expense for repairs.

Define the width of the fillet. A required parameter that must be taken into account is the difference in elevation difference. In fact, it needs to be closed with a fillet.

It is necessary to take into account the height of the walls - the bigger it is, the wider the ceiling skirting is permissible. A wide fillet on low ceilings will visually reduce the height of the room.

With a standard height of the walls and a slight difference in height, it would be best to look at a skirting board with a height of 3-5 cm.

If the wallpaper has a bright and large pattern, then it is worth taking a white ceiling skirting board. Solid walls will be decorated with a colored carved baguette.

Adhesive for ceiling skirting really make your own hands of the materials left after repair. We take 1 part of the water, add any finishing filler in the same volume and add ¼ of the PVA glue.

Stir thoroughly, remove the resulting lumps and leave for a short time. Before use, the solution should be stirred again.

This mixture can be used as a glue mass and for grouting joints between the stripes of the ceiling skirting.

When purchasing ready-made glue, pay attention to the instruction. Inexpensive polymeric compositions are absolutely not suitable for ceiling skirting.

They are capable of qualitatively gluing the surface, but the fixing time is too long.

As you have to glue at a height, keeping a 2 m long strip in a tightened state is very difficult.

Acrylic version allows you to glue the plinth in the living rooms, but the fillet in the bathroom will have to be glued with polyurethane composition.

Justified the use of polyurethane, if you want to fix the ceiling skirting to the tension ceiling.

Pasting the skirting board

The gluing technology is presented on video. To glue the ceiling skirting, you need to apply glue on its back side and press it against the corner between the wall and the ceiling.

The complexity is present in two aspects - in applying glue to the plinth and in the design of the corners. Let us dwell on these points in more detail. When applying, it is important to avoid excess glue.

Adhesive mass, which appeared on the wallpaper, can no longer be removed without a trace. Therefore, in order not to damage the wallpaper, it is necessary to apply a layer of glue that would be sufficient to fix the plinth.

If you use glue in tubes, then by pressing the gun, you will easily squeeze out the right amount.

In case you will be glued using a composition made by yourself, take a brush that fits the width of the baguette.

How can you be sure that you have applied a sufficient amount of glue mass, but without excess?

Turn the plinth face up and hold for a few seconds. If the glue does not start to drip, then it is quite enough.

There are two options for choosing when to glue the baguette - before wallpapering or after.

If the walls are perfectly level at the top or you use polyurethane, then it does not matter which sequence of actions you choose.

With uneven walls or the use of polystyrene it is better to first glue the plinth, then paste the wallpaper, which is cut according to the level of the baguette.

By the way, this will not change the ceiling skirting on the next repair.

You can glue the baguette at the same time to the wallpaper on the wall and ceiling. But if you stretched the ceiling, then sticking fillets to be made exclusively on wallpaper.

It is best to glue the fillets from the corners first. Significant complexity is the joining of baguettes in the corners. To do this, you need a chair to direct the angle of the trimming.

Place the skirting board in the device and cut it at an angle of 45 C. It is important first to join the corners, and then align the footage, pruning the opposite side of the baguette.

Check that the angles are strictly maintained at a slope of 45 C. This process can be viewed on the video.

If it is necessary to hide the wiring under the ceiling skirting, then fix it without sagging in the corner between the wall and the ceiling before you paste the first fillet.

Correctly the first fillets to glue from corners. When from all four corners to the left and to the right the ceiling skirting boards leave, it is possible to paste the remaining ones.

Their pruning, if necessary, we will carry out already at a right angle, which will not be difficult.

If a mistake was made when fixing the strip of skirting( for example, on one side it was glued without adhering to the ceiling), then it must be separated as soon as possible, until the glue has stopped.

Especially carefully make sure that the ends of the skirting boards are securely glued. Deficiencies and inaccuracies will be removed at the stage of finishing works.

Finishing work

When it was possible to glue all stripes of skirting boards, and they already dried, you can begin to mask the seams between adjacent fillets. It will consist of puttying and staining.

If the walls and ceiling are ready, then you need to protect them from getting working solutions with a wide strip of paper, which should be fixed, for example, with safety needles.

In the gap between the skirting boards, put the putty solution and remove the excess with a small plastic spatula. Putty and there are possible gaps between the fillets, walls and ceiling.

We allow the solution to dry for a day and proceed to the grout, which we will produce with a fine fry pellet.

As a result of the correctly putted walls, the baguette and ceiling will look like a single structure. Finishing can be done on this.

But if the skirting board is white, then there is a reason to paint it, this will preserve the fresh color.

Painting can be done later, especially if there is almost no plaster for the joints.

A significant layer of filler mortar requires fixation with paint to prevent it from sloughing under the influence of room heat.

The finer details of the finishing work will allow you to select the fillets and glue the baguettes with your own hands under any technical conditions without problems.
