Which accessory will help you finish the interior design and designate its main style? Of course, curtains! It is this window decoration that carries not only a protective function from unnecessary looks from the street, but is also one of the key moments in interior design. The last phrase fully describes the accessory called French curtains - it's simply impossible not to notice them, because they always hold your eyes.

For those who do not know what French curtains are, we recommend to recall the interior decoration of the theater hall. Remember these heavy draperies, which decorated the stage and the entrances to the hall? That's it such curtains are called French.

French curtains are separate sections of lush draped folds, falling to the floor. Although there are shortened versions of such curtains that reach the window sill, and the lower part of the wall under the window remains open. Such curtains are ideal for the kitchen.

For sure, you would like to know in what interior the French curtains will be appropriate? This decoration of windows is perfect for a classic style, you can even say that such curtains are an integral part of the classic interior. They will also find a refuge, if the room is decorated in Empire style with its pomposity, chic and luxury, as well as Baroque and Neoclassicism.

French curtains in the interior look noble and solemn, but there is one "but": the room should be spacious, because in a room with modest dimensions such smart curtains will look ridiculous.

In principle, this window decoration is quite self-sufficient, but often French curtains are decorated with fringes, brushes, picks( which adds to the interior of rigor and pomposity) or flounces( they impart some playfulness to the interior).Curtains made of light tulle fabrics, perfectly combined with lambrequins and heavy sliding curtains.

Where to hang these curtains? Surprisingly, they can be hung in almost any room! In the living room they will embody warmth and comfort, in the bedroom - romantic, they will give presentable work to the working class, and the kitchen - nobility. They even hang in the children's room, but this is a matter of everyone's taste.

It is clear that for each room is better to choose the right fabric and a model of French curtains. For example, curtains with an abundance of ruches and flounces of soft drapery fabric of pastel colors can not be better for a bedroom. In the living room you can combine light draperies of white color in combination with heavy curtains of Bordeaux color. But the French curtains for the kitchen can be made of semi-transparent organza and have a minimum of folds.

What are the French curtains

In principle, French curtains can be divided into stationary and lifting. The first hang motionless and they can not be moved in any direction or lifted up. They are made, as a rule, from light translucent fabrics, for example, chiffon, organza, and perform the function of tulle.

But the second - lifting curtains - the most common. In them, the sunlight is adjusted by means of an elevator rotary-chain mechanism - they simply rise to the top of the window and are fixed with a special lock. In this case, when lifting up, more folds are formed and the curtains become more magnificent.

How to make French curtains with your own hands

Now it's easy to buy French curtains in the store, moreover, having ordered their tailoring, you will receive curtains thatas much as possible fit into your interior. But it would be much nicer to make French curtains with your own hands, is not it? This is what we are now going to do.

First you need to decide on the tissues. For the manufacture of French curtains apply elastic fabrics, which are easily draped. These can be:

  • curtain or tulle fabrics;
  • silk;
  • polyester;
  • thin cotton and linen;
  • atlas;
  • organza.

In most cases, the fabric is chosen to be one-color, but the use of matter with a light and unobtrusive pattern is allowed in the tailoring.

Then you need to calculate the consumption of tissue. To do this, make measurements of the window and, on the basis of this, type the fabric: the width of the window is multiplied by one and a half, and the height by two - this will be the approximate amount of tissue that will be needed.

Now we turn to the most important - to the question of how to sew French curtains. The process is as follows:

  • To prevent the fabric from shrinking, it needs to be processed. For those who understand what decontamination is, the meaning of the procedure will be very clear. It is necessary either to soak the cloth in warm water for a quarter of an hour, or iron it with an iron with the steaming function turned on.
  • Then lay the fabric on the floor, on the sides we make bends two times as wide as 1-1.5 cm and sew it.
  • In the lower part of the curtains, make a hem two times with a width of 2 cm and sew it.
  • We attach cords to the sewn seams.
  • Next, we form the drapery. On the width of the canvas, we make the markings every 40-50 cm, and sew a 3cm wide cloth cut vertically, bending the edges inwards - this is how we formed the kulisks. We thread the cords in them and fix them at the top, and from the bottom we leave the ends free.
  • In the upper part of the canvas we sew the tape, with which we fix the curtains on the cornice.

As you can see, in this case the height of the curtains is adjusted with the help of a cord. But ready-made French curtains are more convenient to adjust with the help of sewn rings. If you like this option, then sew the rings on each kuliske every 20cm and fix them at the top.
