Instructions for priming walls for wallpaper with your own hands

This operation is the last step in the preparation of any surface for wallpapering. It should be understood that, depending on the material to be removed from the wall( or, for example, the ceiling), the appropriate priming composition is also applied. Although there are universal means, they have certain limitations. And this must be taken into account when priming walls for wallpaper, which everyone can do with their own hands.

Primer is needed for:

  • to ensure the "dust-free" of the treated area, giving it dryness and smoothness;
  • to increase the reliability of the adhesion of the adhesive composition to the surface;
  • reduce the consumption of glue;
  • warning of possible cracking of the lower layer;
  • wall protection from moisture absorption;
  • preserving the "porosity" of the surface. After applying the primer, the wall will continue to "breathe", which will create a normal microclimate and protect the surface from damage from fungus or mold, and wallpaper - from premature spoilage.

A big mistake is made by those who, when preparing surfaces for wallpapering, simply ignore such a step as priming. This work is carried out after the wall has undergone primary( rough) processing. With it removed the remains of wallpaper, old plaster, all sticking out nails or screws, all the ledges are dropped and the skirting boards are removed. It is already plastered or treated with putty.

 The essence of the priming is that the whole wall is thoroughly wetted( and impregnated) with a special compound. After all, after rough cleaning on its surface are sometimes imperceptible particles of dust, dirt, which will not allow you to glue the wallpaper qualitatively.

Primer replaces newspapers that used to be glued to walls before wallpapering. After the primer has dried, the entire surface of the wall will become strong, stop getting dirty. Hence, and the stripes of wallpaper will lie flat and will be held securely.

How to work with the

  1. primer In a pre-prepared container( more conveniently in a bucket), a primer is diluted with water. Guided by the manufacturer's instructions( do not forget that the primer is different).
  2. The resulting mixture is thoroughly mixed. If you use an electric drill with a nozzle for this, which can be made from a thick wire( by the principle of a mixer), then the solution will turn out to be more qualitative.
  3. Priming mixture is best applied with a wide brush. The technique is the same as when whitewashing the ceiling. The composition is simply "smeared" on the wall. The layer should be flat, without obvious "puddles" or untreated places.
  4. The first coat of primer should dry thoroughly. This time is indicated in the instruction for the composition.
  5. Whatever the surface of the wall, it should be primed once the first layer has dried. The fact is that depending on the material of the wall and its condition, the primer on different sites may impregnate the treated surface unequally. The second layer will ensure the proper quality of its preparation.

Note

If the wall is level, then you can use a paint roller instead of a brush. They work much more conveniently.
