Scope of application

Mastic is a fully prepared material. The basis is petroleum bitumen with technological additives, mineral fillers and solvent. This material is relatively cheap, reliable and does not require special knowledge to work with it, thanks to this, it is widely in demand today. Mastic roofing cold does not require preheating before installing it. It is divided into two types: on water and on a polyester basis. It is used for the following purposes:

  • Roof repair;
  • Insulation of junctions;
  • Sealing of various joints;
  • For protection against the effects of atmospheric precipitation of metal structures;
  • For protection of assembly welds;
  • For the protection against the action of corrosion of junctions of metal structures to brick and concrete structures.

Its priming compositions saturate and degrease the surface, thereby increasing the adhesion of the plaster layers. Bitumen mastic is a bitumen-latex disperse system. It has a dispersed phase( bitumen), which is distributed in a dispersed environment of water. Mastics based on polyesters are divided into two types: bitumen with filler and bitumen-polymer, containing polymer modifier and solvent.

Note! Before applying the mastic, the surface should preferably be cleaned of dust and dirt.

Rules for quality work

In order for the waterproofing layer to be of high quality, the mastic for roofing works should be used in compliance with certain rules. Firstly, mastic must necessarily be produced in industrial conditions, with all the necessary certificates. Determine its quality can be an organoleptic method.

So, bituminous mastics have a weight-to-volume ratio of less than one. This means that bitumen is lighter than water. Hence, in a twenty-liter bucket should contain no more than 19 kilograms of material. If this value is greater, then the composition includes various additives that make it less quality. A good mastic will last for many years and will reliably protect the roof even at frosts more than -50 ºС.

Note! The quality of the composition after full drying to the appearance of matte and a bit velvety.

Secondly, it is necessary to strictly follow the technology of applying mastic. After unpacking, mix the material well before use. Thoroughly it is necessary to prepare a surface for compositions of polymer bitumen and bitumen-butyl rubbers. The place of application must be dry, clean, chemically neutral and defatted. Bitumen-latex and bitumen-emulsion compounds are not so demanding for surface cleanliness.

Recommendations for the effective operation of

It is recommended that the mastic roofing waterproofing be applied at least in two layers( across and along), this will make the protective properties as efficient as possible. The thickness of the layers should not be more than one and a half millimeters, this will give a good polymerization of the material. The first layer should dry for 6-9 hours, and only after that is applied the second and all subsequent.

New layers are applied only after the previous ones have dried. The work should be done at plus temperature, if there is a need for urgent waterproofing at minus temperature, then the accelerator is added to the mastic, it will help the material to polymerize faster. Important! All layers of the composition should be applied within a day from the application of the first layer.

Working with the composition is very simple, but as with any type of waterproofing, some caution is required here. Avoid contact of mastic with mucous membranes. During work, wear protective clothing, gloves and goggles.
