General information

The best option for installing a sink - in the worktop niche. The easiest way to do this is in the process of overhauling an apartment or building a house, because then any idea can be "beat" in accordance with the design of the bathroom. One of the options may be the construction of a table top made of moisture-resistant plasterboard and profile. The material should be strong and well withstand a high level of humidity, otherwise the cabinet will last very short. For this purpose, MDF boards are ideally suited, of which furniture for the bathroom and kitchen is made. Glass countertops for the bathroom are also quite popular, but making them at home is very difficult, so do not stop there.

Any construction work, including the construction of a countertop, must begin with a detailed drawing plan and clear measurements.

countertop-in-the-bathroom

There are a number of rules for the construction of countertops for a bathroom sink:

  • to set the countertop is necessary on the frame, reinforced on the adjacent walls;
  • The height of the table top is calculated for reasons of comfort of use( growth of family members), as well as taking into account facing materials, which can also affect the overall dimensions of the structure;
  • if there are shelves under the countertop, the first level should be 25-30 centimeters from the bottom of the countertop;
  • put the door or not - it's purely personal, but if you plan to store detergents, powders and other household chemicals in a cabinet under the sink, it's best that access to them be closed. This will prolong the period of storage of funds and protect you from contact with children or animals.

Preparation of a table top

When all the measurements are taken and a detailed drawing is made, you can start building a multi-function pedestal with a countertop.

Procedure:

  • , mark on the surface of the future tabletop a place for a niche where the washbasin will be built in. To do this, take the sink, turn it upside down, attach it to the table top and draw a contour with a pencil;
  • cut the hole in the layout;
  • cover the edges of the countertop with slats or self-adhesive thermo-tape to protect the edges from swelling from moisture. If you have chosen rails, use only moisture resistant glue, otherwise they will simply fall off;
  • when the glue dries, if necessary, grind the edges of the countertop with sandpaper;
  • cover the edges with a primer mix for wood.

Wall installation and cladding

If you are making a MDF countertop, the walls must be made of the same material.

Procedure:

  • cut the walls for the future stand, guided by the drawing;
  • with dowels, fix the walls to the wall under the corners on which the table top is held;
  • install the doors with the hinged method.

mdf

The lining can be made with any moisture resistant materials, the most common of which is tile. You can use mosaic tiles or ordinary tiles. Consider a variant of a countertop for a bathroom from a mosaic.

Cladding works:

  • table top and all external parts of the cabinet to be covered with moisture-resistant glue;
  • attach and properly press glued mosaic tiles. If the tile has a protective paper layer, it must be moistened and gently removed;
  • disguise the joints between tiles with the help of a moisture-resistant grout and squeegee - a special rubber tool;
  • if you first built a cabinet, and the countertop is not yet installed, attach it to the crate and corners and set the sink in a niche;
  • fix the sink with a sanitary sealant, filling the space between the edges of the washbasin and the niche.

Useful advice: with a modest quadrature of the bathroom, you can visually increase it by hanging a large mirror over the sink.

Stone table top

Not only MDF or plasterboard is suitable for the manufacture of countertops. Stone structures are very popular due to their durability and practicality. Ordering such furniture or buying ready is quite expensive. The cost of the countertop for the bathroom depends on the rock, however, such pleasure "will fly into a pretty penny."But we are not here to monitor furniture prices, but to learn how to do it ourselves. The worktop for the stone bathroom will decorate the interior, give it nobility and good quality.

acrylic

Before you begin to work, it is necessary to decide on the materials.

So, the stone countertop can be made of the following materials:

  • concrete - the most common building material for capital construction can serve as an excellent basis for creating a beautiful worktop. And to give it a nice appearance, you can add special dyes or crumbs to the solution;
  • artificial stone - acrylic artificial stones can be bought in the form of sheets, the thickness of which varies from 3 to 12 mm. The basis of the material is acrylic with the addition of granite or marble chips. The plywood top is covered with such a stone sheet and installed on the curbstone;
  • ceramic tiles - one of the most popular ways in terms of its simplicity and accessibility. Tile a priori looks better in the bathroom than in any other room, but it should be chosen correctly, especially for facing the countertop. As in the case of an artificial stone, a veneer lining is fixed to the plywood base with a moisture-resistant adhesive. If you connect the fantasy and use multi-colored elements, you can make an original beautiful countertop for the bathroom from the tiles.

Worktop made of concrete

Concrete has long ceased to be an ordinary building material. Today, beautiful and durable elements are made from it for benches, fountains, landscape decorations, decor elements, used in modern sculpture, etc. Worktops made of concrete are also gaining popularity, mainly because it is quite simple to make them, and such furniture serves almost forever.

To make concrete for the countertop you will need:

  • cement( grade 400 or more);
  • filler( it is better to take fine-grained - granite flour or river sand);
  • coarse-grained filler( gravel, marble or granite chips);
  • plasticizers.

concrete worktop

Useful advice: to make a design miracle from a "boring" concrete countertop, add burnt cullet to the concrete. It is important that the edges of the panes are not sharp. As a result, you will receive a unique drawing. You can also add dyes or colors. If you pour them during the pouring of concrete in a special shape and distribute unevenly, then you can get an interesting original pattern. If you are familiar with the technique of drawing ebru, you can apply your skills in creating a unique countertop for the bathroom with your own hands.

Method of manufacture:

  • take a solid base with a glossy surface. It can be laminated plywood or chipboard. It is imperative that the surface is moisture resistant. Hover the outline on the model and screw the bars. If you already know where the technical holes will be located, then note that they should not be filled with concrete later. Cutting concrete will be more difficult, but for skilled craftsmen there is nothing impossible - some holes can be made already in the finished countertop;
  • to avoid painful finishing of the edges, make a facet around the perimeter of the base at an angle of 45 degrees. It can be made from ordinary plasticine with a spatula;Fill the resulting frame with concrete. In order to distribute the material evenly over the surface, especially if it contains cullet, shells or other decorative elements, it is better to use a vibrating table. You can also use special vibrators with long nozzles that penetrate into the thickness of the solution. If you have the necessary tools, you can be sure that all air will leave the concrete, and the table top will be as strong as possible. If you decide to strengthen the countertop, then the foundation should be filled in two stages with a periodicity of 24 hours. When the first layer dries, put the reinforcement on it, and then pour out the remains of the concrete mixture;
  • when the concrete is completely dry, carefully remove the frame, turn the countertop over and set it on the bars. Using a grinder with a coarse-grained packing, remove about 1 mm of the top layer;
  • clean the surface with a vacuum cleaner and a damp cloth;
  • wipe the surface with grout to fill all small pores, and leave it to dry again;
  • last stage - grinding of the table top with fine-grained nozzles as they decrease up to zero.

Concrete worktop will last several decades. It is protected from burnout, fading, mechanical damage and chemical damage.

Table top made of artificial stone

Acrylic worktop does not need any processing, but do not think that it will be possible to save considerably on this - the cost of artificial stone slabs is sometimes impressive. So, a marble countertop for a bathroom can cost several times more expensive than a granite countertop. But any money is justified by the beauty and functionality of this material. You just need to choose the color you like, the thickness, the dimensions and cut the countertop.

And if the table of artificial stone can suffer in the kitchen from knife and hot dishes, but in the bathroom it does not threaten anything. All that is required of it is high moisture resistance, and this quality has always been one of the strongest.

Method of manufacturing countertops of artificial stone:

  • assemble the frame-base. The sheet of artificial stone is not thick enough to become a full tabletop, so it must be attached to a solid foundation. For this, the usual plywood is perfect. If you cut it in strips 7 cm wide, you can form a good frame. Make a layout of the table in advance and use it when assembling. If you bought an artificial stone sheet 3 mm thick, use a solid base;
  • fix the artificial stone on the base with a moisture-resistant two-component adhesive that can cope with both acrylic and wood. For this purpose epoxy resin is fine, but it is quite toxic, so do not neglect the safety rules. Spread the adhesive on the surface of the substrate with a spatula. On the underside of the sheet of artificial stone, apply glue only where the sheet will touch the substrate. Press the materials better from the center to the edges;
  • when the glue dries, equalize the ends of the countertop using a milling machine or a bar with a large nazhdachkoy. Cut the strips from the sheet of artificial stone and cover the ends of the countertop, previously cleaned and degreased.

Useful tip: if the shape of your countertops involves bends, then in this case the end strips must be preheated to a temperature of 165 degrees. This can be done with a construction hair dryer. Heat the strip and quickly bend it at the desired angle. The material will harden very quickly and retain a new shape. After that, you can apply glue and fix it on the end.

To mask the glue, add a pigment that is close in tone with the color of the artificial stone.

For the installation of the sink, it is necessary to make a hole with an electric jigsaw, and glue the perimeter of the niche with a construction foil adhesive tape.
