Materials

Before the screens in the bathroom were used not so much to protect the walls and floor from moisture, but only for aesthetic reasons. Such screens were made of wood and were supposed to be a decoration of the bathroom, protecting the person who washed himself from prying eyes.

Now the bathroom screens are mostly made of two materials: glass and plastic.

Designer screen made of plastic

Polycarbonate

Polycarbonate is a universal material , which has been used in the past few years everywhere - from the construction of greenhouses and roofs to the manufacture of lenses and CDs.

Polycarbonate has the following useful physical properties:

  • It is heat-resistant and can withstand even large temperature differences;
  • It has a high strength and toughness, so you do not have to fear that you accidentally split the screen and get hurt while taking water procedures;
  • Polycarbonate is resistant to chemicals, making it easy to clean;
  • Polycarbonate - a lightweight material and structures made of it are almost weightless;
  • It is easy to assemble, as the plastic bends, and the probability of it being split or scratched during installation is several times smaller than when installing the glass.

All of the above properties make it an ideal material for use in the bathroom. In addition, plastic screens are usually much cheaper than glass screens.

Glass

  • Glass is resistant to aggressive environment;
  • It is hygienic, does not rot and does not form germs and molds;
  • Glass screens have low thermal conductivity;
  • Their service life is much higher than that of plastic screens;
  • Regarding the choice of colored screens, it should be noted that the staining of glass screens is more stable.

Multi-section screens for the bathroom

Movable screens are installed on the side of the bathroom and attached to the walls near it.

According to the type of construction, these screens are divided into:

  • Frame - have a special plastic or metal frame, which allows the use of thinner glass or plastic. Such structures are considered to be more durable and reliable and will not allow a single drop of moisture to fall onto your floor.
  • Frameless screens. As a rule, thick tempered glass is used for their production. The most common is the model of the screen, covering half the bath, with smooth rounded corners. They are also called angular.
  • Combined or multi-section screens, as the name implies, combines both of the above types of structures.
  • Also the screens can be solid and composite.

Depending on the type of flaps used, screens are:

  • Opening - which one or more flaps opens with a push outward.
  • Sliding - in which either one door on the roller moves to one side, or two doors parted in different directions.
  • Folding - doors, which are folded on the hinges.

The first option with opening flaps is not the most convenient and is suitable only for baths with a large area.

The role in the design of the

The screen is no less important element of the decor of the room than the tile or plumbing, because because of its impressive dimensions, it's impossible not to notice it in the room. What do you need to consider when choosing the design of the screen for your bathroom?

  • For those who do not want the screen in his bathroom to be too noticeable, a screen made of transparent glass or polycarbonate is ideal.
  • If you have several people living in the apartment, and the bathroom is combined, it is better to use a matte screen or a screen with a dense pattern.
  • In addition, both glass and plastic screens can be made in a certain color range. It must be selected in accordance with the color scheme of your bathroom.
  • The bathroom screen can be supplemented with an original design stroke if you place on it some beautiful drawing or create an interesting texture on it.
  • We advise giving nevertheless a preference for semi-transparent screens of light colors. Otherwise, you will have to think more carefully about the lighting directly above the bathroom itself.

Procedure:

  1. Use a tape measure to measure the exact dimensions of the future screen. You should note that there must be a clear space between the top edge of the screen and the ceiling for light and fresh air. Otherwise, too much moist air will accumulate behind the screen and you simply will not have anything to breathe.
  2. Mark the resulting dimensions on the polycarbonate sheet and gently trim the excess with any suitable tool that is available in your stock.
  3. If you plan to make a fixed screen, attach the lower profile to the side of the bathroom with a sealant. Before proceeding with the next steps, allow the sealant to completely solidify.
  4. The side profile will be attached to the wall. First you need to make a markup in the places where you plan to place the mounts. Then make holes in the appropriate places and attach the profile to the wall using self-tapping screws.
  5. Insert the polycarbonate into the grooves of the profile and make sure that it is firmly seated and does not stagger in it.
  6. Attach the remaining profile to the top edge of the leaf and from the second side.
  7. Attach the handle to a comfortable height for you.
  8. Check that the screen is working.
Screen for bathroom

With a great desire, you can make a screen, starting not from the side of the bathroom, but from the floor. However, in this case it makes sense to think about the purchase of a shower cubicle. As you can see, the process of manufacturing a bathroom screen with your own hands is not at all complicated. If you purchase, special rollers and appropriate fasteners, you can independently make even a sliding or folding screen.

The glass screen, in principle, can also be installed independently. The truth in this case you have to go to a special workshop, where you will cut out a piece of glass of the right size and shape. Also, install the glass in the profile and fasten it better not alone, but with some partner. As we have already mentioned, glass is heavier than plastic and the likelihood that it will slip out of your hands and break. During work, use special construction gloves.
