Why is it needed?

Primer is a white opaque liquid that, after drying, penetrates into the material and forms a film inside and outside. In this way, the surface is strengthened, which prolongs its service life. In addition, it provides good adhesion between the surface and the material applied from above, and also forms the first layer of the multilayer coating, so the requirements for it are high enough. Depending on the conditions of use, different types of this mixture are used.

Water repellent primer, as mentioned above, is used in rooms with high humidity. It is applied to porous surfaces such as stone, brick, plasterboard, concrete, plaster and so on. The purpose of this treatment is to protect these materials from the destructive effects of moisture and wetting inside and outside the room. In addition, the primer enhances the hydrophobizing properties of concrete and cement mixtures.

Important! Use mixtures that can not resist moisture, is inappropriate, since they do not have any useful properties for the surface.

Types of material

Primer for bathroom is divided into two groups:

  • adhesive;
  • strengthening.

The first is necessary in order to improve the adhesion between the layers of finish. It is applied to painted or plastered surfaces. Depending on what material is taken as the basis of the mixture, there are alkyd, acrylic, mineral, phenolic, polystyrene primers. In the premises you can use only the first three types.

Strengthening mixtures are used for starting surface treatment to strengthen and align it before applying the next layer. After applying the primer, the upper layer of the material is glued to a depth of up to three centimeters. When using deep penetration primers, the bonding layer can grow to 10 centimeters. Use this mixture before applying a thick layer of coating - artistic plaster or tile glue.

Important! Before purchasing a mixture with water-repellent properties, be sure to carefully read the information on the composition and application conditions on the package.

Waterproof primer or what should I know about it?

Moisture primer primer should be applied to a pre-prepared surface. For this, the latter is cleaned, degreased and smoked. All large cracks must be removed with plaster. After applying the mixture, its water-repellent properties will appear after 12 hours. If there is a need to add a primer to the building mixes, it should be remembered that its share should not exceed 4% of the total mass of the solution. Before use, mix thoroughly. Apply it by sprayer, roller or brush in several layers at a temperature of at least +5 degrees Celsius.

Primer is a fire and explosive substance, so keep it away from sources of ignition. It is also forbidden to mix it with other types of mixtures, solvents and diluents. Working with it, personal protective equipment for the respiratory system, hands and eyes should be used. Keep the substance in a tightly closed container and at a temperature of at least +5 degrees, although it is able to withstand up to five freeze-thaw cycles, after which it will completely restore its water-repellent properties.

Important! In the case of freezing the mixture, it should be thawed at room temperature during the day.
