Cable stocking: device, purpose, standard sizes

What to do when you need to raise the cable in the sewer channel? A special tool must be used. A cable stocking is a device that is made specifically for tightening a conductor into a sewer pipe. On the one hand, this device consists of an eyelet, to which a pulling wire is attached, and on the other, cables that are twisted into a tube (proboscis). This trunk is pushed onto the end of the wire and fixed. Next, we will consider the device, purpose and standard sizes of cable stockings.

The main types of stockings

There are various types of such a tool. Which cable grommet will be used depends on the installation and cable routing conditions.

The following device types exist:

  • Standard or classic single hinge. Used when pulling a cable to grip it from the end side. Their high strength is due to the double twist of the cable (steel).
  • Standard with one pair of hinges. Their purpose is the same as in classic devices, they are used in the usual stretching workflow. This cable stocking is elastic, making it easy to install.
  • Single loop checkers. Such devices are used when it is necessary to stretch the electrical wire in any accessible area while pulling the electrical wire.
  • Pass-through (detachable) with a pair of hinges. They are used in case of impossibility of fixing the device to the end (for example, at sharp turns).
  • Triple. Used to stretch three cords at once. The structure of the mechanism is as follows: three elongated wires are connected by one loop.
  • Side. It is used to temporarily take the electrical wire from the side (from the front side).
  • Transit or portable devices. With their help, individual conductors are connected.
  • Lightweight cable grip. They are used when the dimensions of the electric wire are small. These can be TV wires, indoor wiring, or fiber optic cables.

Instructions for use

The design of the device is simple, but, despite this, it has its own peculiarity and trick: the conductor easily enters the cable stocking, but it is very difficult to push it back out. Below is a diagram of the acting forces that arise during broaching:

The large arrow on the right indicates the pulling force that results from the pull. The wires that are curled around the cable are pulled tight. The small vertical arrows show the compressive force that the wires create when they are straightened. This contraction takes place around the entire circumference of the device.

When the traction loads are very large, such a force in most cases deforms the outer sheath of the electrical wire without damaging it. Therefore, it is simply impossible to rip off such a stocking. After all, the more force is applied, the more the mechanism is compressed. When the pulling force is exceeded, it is usually not the device itself that breaks, but its eyelet or wire. The device remains intact in place.

The fixing tie, which is located on the tail of the device, also has a second meaning. This is provided that the screed is done correctly. There is practically no load on it when it is pulled in. But if it is necessary to pull the cable line back, this tie plays a significant role. The tool is able not only to independently contract when pulling the cable, but also to unclench (unclench) on its own when it is removed. If there is no tie for fixing in the mechanism, or is simply not clamped, then during the return movement it easily slides off the wire.

Underground cable routing requires special skills and tools. Therefore, a tool such as a cable stocking is very necessary and important in the process of work. With its help, you can not only quickly stretch the high-voltage line along the entire length of the route, but also use it as a gripping mechanism. But this is not the only mechanism that is necessary for laying an electrical line, but it is considered one of the main ones in this work.
