What parameters should a window board have?

The manufacture of window boards can be made from different materials: natural and artificial stones, various plastics, laminated chipboard, wood, etc. At the same time, the design of the window sill should be provided with a selection of special gutters, called teardrops and serving just for draining moisture.

Their depth, width and distance from the front side of the board are normalized, respectively, 8, 10 and 20 millimeters. The width of such a board depends on the thickness of the lower( supporting) part of the wall of the window opening. The length should provide overlapping aperture of a window, on the average, not less than on 60 millimeters from each party. The edges of the board are embedded in the side walls of the opening or under the finish of its internal slopes.

As a rule, under the window there are radiators of heating systems, so the installed window sill can and should protrude beyond the edge of the wall, on average, no more than 60 millimeters. This requirement is due to the convection type of heating: the air heated by the radiator rises, creating a kind of heat shield between the cooler windows in the window frame and the warm interior space of the room. For most wood boards, the average thickness is about 45 millimeters.

A number of requirements are imposed on the material used for manufacturing. There are certain rules of this process. A quality wooden board is made of wood only from dry wood, with a humidity of no more than 15%, in which there are no knots or other defects.

The original board must have the thickness indicated above, with allowance for material removal during machining, and provide the required width in accordance with the requirements described above. In the manufacturing process, all sides of the future window sill are carefully processed.

When self-produced, they are planed by a plane, and the faces are machined with a jointer. The outer edge is trimmed with a curly groove to give it a shape, the groove groove is selected from below with the required dimensions.

When you are going to install yourself, you need to know that if there are several windows in one room, then( according to the requirements of SNiP) the installation of window boards in the same room is carried out at the same level.

No special tool is required for the installation work. It is important to observe the horizontal nature of the boards with respect to the floor. To avoid stagnation of moisture on its surface, the angle of inclination of the board inside the room( according to the standards already mentioned) should not be more than two degrees. These requirements are easily ensured by using a building level of the appropriate length.

Step-by-step instruction for the installation of window sills

When preparing the surface for installation on the lower platform of the window opening, a cement or lime base is made, mandatory waterproofing is arranged. The wooden window sill is treated with antiseptics, and it is recommended to cover it with a felt layer with the same impregnation. The edges of the board, which enter the side walls of the opening, are covered with waterproofing.

I must say that the inner edge of the window board should rest on a special sample in the quarter made in the lower horizontal part of the frame, entering under it, and in no case in the side edge of the window frame or binding. For secure attachment, nails up to 15 cm long are used.

Three-four points of the inner side of the window board resting on the fourth sample, and in the corresponding places of this sample, holes of half the diameter of the nails are projected and bored in the frame at half their length. Then the nails are cut off from the nails, and they are half clogged into the base of the window frame.

Before the final installation, a structural foam is applied to the base, the prefabricated window sill is carefully packed on the protruding parts of the nails until it is fully seated in the frame and is pressed with spacers or load to prevent it from being raised by foam expanding during polymerization. In the end, the edges embedded in the side walls are embedded, the space under the installed board is insulated.
