What is Foam Foam?

Due to its versatility and applicability in various construction sites, assembly foam occupies an important place. Indeed, these have become familiar for a long time, these compounds allow to quickly and reliably seal and strengthen the door and window boxes in the joints with the walls of the apertures.

Mounting foams refer to polyurethane foam sealants. In fact, this liquid polymer, leaving the packaging container under the influence of the displacing gas, polymerizes by contacting with natural atmospheric moisture, with an expansion of the mass volume more than three times.

Which, by the way, determines the urgent recommendations of specialists that the construction foam foam should fill the sealed seam no more than a third of its depth.

This recommendation takes into account not only the ability to expand in the polymerization, but also significant solidification of the mass, which in combination can lead to disruption of the geometry and initial installation in the opening of the window or door frame. Therefore, in addition to the recommended filling of joints, it is worthwhile to apply special reinforcement structures and spacers in boxes for the time of solidification of the filling composition.

Species variety of foams and their properties

Given the high demand, manufacturers produce different types of mounting foam. All divisions into different species are rather arbitrary. So, depending on the attached attachments and the possibilities of using the already mentioned pistols, they talk about professional and household compounds.

The household installation foam differs in that it is equipped with a special plastic tube, it costs much less and is designed for small amounts of work. Unlike household, professional allows you to perform the amount of work several times more. The possibility of using pistols extends the field of application to the most inaccessible areas with a much more economical use of foam. And the volume of the container of professional packaging is higher than that of a household one.

Depending on the polymerization temperatures, it is customary to talk about summer, winter and all-seasons foams. For summer, the minimum operating temperature at which qualitative polymerization is still possible is about five degrees Celsius. For winter, this limit is lower and is minus fifteen degrees Celsius.

Obviously, such a mounting foam for outdoor works is more suitable. It should be noted that for both, the upper limit is +35 Celsius .But a wider range of operating temperatures is distinguished by all-weather assembly foam: from minus ten to plus forty degrees Celsius. Data are given for the liquid state. Polymerized foam safely tolerates swings from minus fifty to plus ninety degrees Celsius.

And then, no matter what kind of mounting foam there is, it should be said that all its species do not tolerate the influence of the ultraviolet part of the spectrum( direct sunlight). What causes the need for mandatory isolation and protection of the docking seam in different ways: plastering, painting, plastering, shpatlevaniem or others.

This should be done after complete polymerization, usually it ends within eight hours. And, despite the temperature ranges, it is not recommended to work with foams in cold weather. The low air humidity associated with low temperature does not contribute to the stated polymerization time.

Foam component and rules for working with

The majority of foams meet the basic requirements: adhesiveness, low shrinkage after full polymerization, high ductility, low brittleness( including frost). There is a one-component assembly foam and a two-component foam. The first - polyurethane, in its composition contains a complex composition of the prepolymer component, retarding the burning of additives, plasticizers of propellants.

The free isocyanate contained therein causes a reaction with atmospheric moisture leading to the polymerization of the ballooned formulation. As already mentioned, the final hardening process takes about eight hours. Foam mounting two-component differs by accelerated polymerization. As the manufacturers say, this time can be from four minutes to a quarter of an hour. In most packages, components are mixed by activating a special activation lever and shaking the balloon.

Rapid reaction in some foams leads to avalanche polymerization when, after four minutes, the adhesiveness of the mixture is lost, and after 15 minutes the composition can be cut at the joint. But, as the manufacturers themselves point out, it takes about two hours to completely solidify the composition.

In addition, the stated temperature range of the liquid mixture is from minus thirty to plus eighty degrees Celsius. During the application of cylinders, simple rules should be taken into account. So, more difficult to access and inconvenient for work, it is worth "zapenivat" in the first place, while the pressure in the cylinder is high enough, and the foam goes well. In the sun and in the "dry" time of day, it is better not to conduct work.

Before application of foam, the area to be treated should be moderately humidified. During the work, the application of the composition should be uniform and minimal. It is better to apply an additional layer( after preliminary moistening of the surface of the previous one).

It should be remembered that even a very accurate pruning of the foam at the seam changes the structure of the latter, reducing its strength, and leads to the need for additional protection measures. In any case, without performing such protective measures, work with joints from the mounting foam can not be considered complete.
