The drainage siphon is a necessary and extremely useful thing because it protects our house from unpleasant smells that canpenetrate from the sewer, and also prevents the formation of blockages in the pipes. Usually there are at least three drainage siphons in the house. One of them is installed under the kitchen sink, the second - under the bathroom, and the third - under the sink. Our today's article is devoted to the last kind of siphons. From it you will learn about the device and features of operation of various types of siphons for the sink. We hope that this information will help you make the right choice!

Types

As already mentioned, the drain siphon is installed not only under the sink, but also for other types of sanitary ware, for example, under a bath or bidet. For each piece of sanitary ware there is a certain kind of siphon that has its own characteristics.

The drainage siphon for the bath exists in three versions:

Traditional

The traditional siphon is familiar to everyone, without exception. It allows you to fill the tub with water, just plugging the drain hole with a rubber stopper on the chains. In order to drain the water, it is enough to remove the cork.

Semi-automatic

The semi-automatic siphon makes the task of recruiting and lowering water even easier. It is equipped with a control unit, which is attached from the outside, to the overflow opening.

In order to bring the drain-overflow mechanism into operation, it is necessary to press the button, raise the lever or turn the valve on the control unit, depending on its device. As a result, a special cable will lower or lift the plug closing the drain.

Semi-Automatic Bathtub Siphon

Automatic

Automatic siphon appeared on the plumbing market relatively recently. Its internal arrangement is practically no different from its predecessors, but control takes place in a different way.

The drain hole is closed by an automated plug-valve. When you press it, the plug goes down and tightly clogs the drain, and when you press it again it goes up.

For bidet

The peculiarity of the drainage siphon for the bidet is an unusually large bend of the knee, as large water flows through this siphon. Basically, the design of the siphon for the bidet and the sink is practically the same. More about the types of siphons for shells, we'll talk in the next section.

Types

Pipe

The pipe siphon is a curved metal or plastic pipe. A water gate is formed in the bend of the pipe, but it is not very deep. Therefore, if a siphon is not used for a long time, the water evaporates from it, causing a specific, musty smell. In addition, the pipe siphon is often clogged, resulting in clogging.

Fortunately, the design provides the ability to disassemble the siphon and clean it. However, if you install a pipe siphon not in the bathroom, but in the kitchen, this operation will have to be done quite often. Another drawback of this type of siphon is that it takes up a lot of space, and leaves almost no useful space under the sink.

Bottles

Bottle siphon is called so because its middle part is an elongated flask resembling a bottle in shape. In order to install such a siphon under the sink, you will most likely need the help of professionals. But you can completely disassemble and clean some of its elements yourself.

The advantage of bottle siphons is that they allow you to connect the drain from the dishwasher and washing machine directly, without additional diversion to the sewer. And, finally, the last argument in favor of this kind of siphons: if a small object gets into the drain hole of the shell, you can always get it by simply unscrewing the bottom of the bulb.

Corrugated

The corrugated siphon is a plastic pipe, which, thanks to its folded structure, is able to take any shape. Plasticity is the main advantage of this type of siphon. It can be squeezed into even the smallest space under the sink and attached to the sink in a convenient way for you. In addition, the corrugated siphon consists of only two elements: the actual pipe and the connecting unit.

Its almost monolithic structure reduces the chance of leakage many times. The disadvantages of this siphon are: firstly, it is unstable to high and low temperatures. That is, you can not allow to get into it boiling water or the formation of ice, and secondly - the folds quickly become clogged with fat, which causes clogging, so in order to clean the siphon, it will have to be completely dismantled.

Dry

Dry siphon appeared on the sanitary ware market relatively recently. Due to its special design, which prevents the stagnation of water, it has often been used in dachas where there is no heating.

When the water enters the rubber membrane opens, and the water passes through it, like a pipe. As soon as the water ceases to flow, the membrane contracts again and closes the flow hole.

Classification by material

For the production of siphons, plastic or metal is used.

Metal

If you do not plan to close the siphon cabinet or mount it inside the pedestal, then you should choose the metal product. Siphons made of metal look more aesthetically pleasing, and more expensive models are truly luxurious.

Especially popular metal siphons with chrome plated coating. They perfectly harmonize with other chrome interior details in the bathroom: a heated towel rail, a mixer, a curtain rod, door handles. Choosing a chrome-plated siphon, remember that without proper care, the coating very quickly loses its original shine.

The siphon cover is usually chosen in accordance with the general style of the bathroom. So, in the classical or vintage interior it is worth giving preference to a drain siphon with a copper, bronze or brass coating.

Plastic

A more modern version is plastic siphons. Plastic is a light, durable and durable material, which, moreover, is much cheaper than metal.

The plastic siphon is very easy to install on its own, and, if necessary, disassemble. Among other things, the essential advantage of plastic models is that deposits of lime are not formed on their walls.

However, if you chose the plastic siphon, make sure that it is hidden. It looks very unattractive, so it is more suitable for closed shell models, for example, for a tulip shell.

Selection of

So, the choice of the siphon depends on many different factors:

  • Type of sink to which the siphon is connected. If the shell of such a model, that the space under it is open to the eye, then it is worth buying a metal siphon. The plastic siphon does not look so good, therefore it is better to install it only under closed sink models.
  • Free space in the bathroom. If the bathroom is small and each piece of free space on the account, then buy a corrugated plastic siphon. It occupies very little space and allows, for example, to install under the sink a washing machine.
  • The room in which the siphon will be used. If you choose a siphon in a country house, in which there is no water supply in winter, you will need a dry type drain siphon.
  • Throughput of the siphon .It must be higher the more household appliances are connected to it and the greater the water pressure in the tap.
  • Siphon section width. The capacity of the siphon depends directly on it.
  • Price of the siphon. Metal models tend to be more expensive.

Self-installation

Before starting the installation of the siphon, it is necessary to carry out some preparatory work. The first thing, of course, is to get rid of the old siphon. After it is dismantled, try to at least cleanse a little of the accumulations of mud sewer pipe. In the future, this will help you avoid the formation of blockages.

Dismantling the old siphon

The groove of the siphon housing is sealed with an O-ring gasket and tighten the parts. On the branch pipe, secure the coupling nut and seal with a cone-shaped gasket. Insert the branch pipe into the housing groove and tighten the nut, but not until the stop, otherwise the siphon will not work. To the side branch pipe, attach the tap and fix the connection with a tightening nut, pre-sealing with a flat gasket. Put a protective mesh in the drain hole of the sink, and on the other side a pipe. Do not forget to seal the joint with a rubber gasket! Secure the structure by screwing the clamping screw into the grate.
