How to hang a chandelier on different types of ceiling?

When finishing the ceiling, you need to understand how to hang a chandelier.

Very often in a room are limited to pointwise ceiling lights.

However, not all rooms, especially in a spacious living room or studio apartment, the interior will not look finished without a chandelier.

It, usually located on the ceiling in the center, gives a bright and even illumination of the middle of the room.

To ensure correct lighting in a room with high ceilings, only ceiling light emitting dots are almost impossible.

Here is not a complete number of reasons why you need to hang a chandelier.

In the article we will consider how to properly hang yourself and demonstrate the video.

Planning and preparation of the

If you have not purchased a chandelier, then take some useful advice:

  • Do not buy a cheap Chinese version. They often fail for the most unexpected reasons. For example, fixing a hook can not withstand the weight of the chandelier. Fixing the lamp with your own hands can be very problematic;
  • When purchasing, make sure that the cartridges can be changed by yourself, the quality wires and the visible part of the wiring are enough to dock it with the room wiring;
  • Chandelier, which has plastic parts near the cartridge, it is better not to buy. Overheating from light bulbs, they almost certainly lose shape and float;
  • Take a close look at the power of the lamp. It happens that in the lamp for three lamps the permissible power of each is low, so the lighting will clearly not be enough. Low power of each lamp is quite acceptable, if the chandelier is at 8-10 points - the total power will provide enough bright illumination;
  • Luminaire design. In a small or low room it is better to hang a flat chandelier, stretched along the ceiling. It will visually increase the space. If the room is spacious and the ceilings high, it will look great with a massive chandelier with a lot of light bulbs. If you have a plasterboard or stretch ceiling, and all the work on the preparation of the carcass and ceiling to hang the chandelier, were carried out correctly, then you are not limited in the weight of the chandelier. But in the case where the ceiling is already decorated, the area on which you can mount a chandelier is not, and the anchor is shorter than the ceiling area, you have one choice - to hang on the hook only a very light ceiling chandelier. A heavy chandelier, which in this case can only be attached to the ceiling frame on the hook, will bend it, which will irreparably damage the design.

Before you hang the chandelier, you need to determine where the wiring is located.

If you had to mount a suspended or plasterboard ceiling yourself, then you certainly have an idea of exactly where and how the electricity is supplied.

Fixing fasteners, you will not touch the electrical wiring. If the apartment has a concrete ceiling, or suspended, but incarnated without your participation, then the wiring will have to be looked for.

The easiest way to do this is with the help of the E121 signaling device, called the "Woodpecker" by the electricians, for the characteristic knock that it makes when it detects electricity.

To use it, no special skills are required. This inexpensive device will help you many times when working with electrical wiring.

Take them to the ceiling and, by a characteristic knock, determine where the wires are laid. Calculate where you can drive a hook or fix the bar.

As a result of the preparatory work, you have properly prepared, out-posted electrical wires. Now you can start fixing the chandelier.

Mounting the

fixture A video instruction on how to hang the chandelier is presented below in the section.

The first step is to secure the chassis frame.

If the luminaire is to be fixed to a normal ceiling, the fastening panel, hook, anchor or laths are fixed directly to the ceiling.

The anchor is screwed into the drilled hole, where it "opens the parachute".A hook is attached in a similar way.

The bar or panel fasteners are fixed to three or four screws, or fixed with anchors( depending on the weight of the luminaire).

If the chandelier is light and there are 4-5 holes in the fastening plate, then it is not necessary to use them all. For a light chandelier, it is enough to fix three points.

Most often, chandeliers are equipped with a decorative cap that closes the place of attachment of the hook or anchor.

Before drilling and screwing a hook or anchor, mark how the fastener will fit and try to see if the cap completely covers it.

If all the fixture after the chandelier installation has been installed, it will be hidden, then you can fix the hook, anchor or bar and proceed with the electrical connection yourself.

If two wires are connected to the ceiling fixture mounting point( the most standard situation), then this is zero and the phase that must be attached to the same wires on the chandelier.

You can distinguish zero from the phase using a conventional indicator screwdriver, when aligned with the phase, the screwdriver will give a light signal.

If three wires are output from the overhead wiring, this is zero, phase and ground.

There can be no external differences between these three wires, and we need a multimeter.

A wiring consisting of three wires is rarely used for ceiling light fixtures, but it allows you to hang very powerful chandeliers, which are usually also equipped with three electrical inputs.

If there are only two inputs on your luminaire, you will not be able to connect all three wires of the ceiling wiring, and the grounding wire must be insulated.

In a large room is often installed a double switch, one part of which includes half the bulbs on the chandelier, and the second - the remaining points.

Video:

In this case, not three but four wires will go out of the ceiling wiring - two zeros and two phases that need to be connected to the corresponding inputs on the chandelier.

There will also be four if the chandelier does not provide grounding, and two identical sets of three wires each, if grounding is provided.

Connecting chandelier and ceiling wires can be twisted( old-fashioned) or using modern terminal blocks.

It is not advisable to conduct the soldering of wires.

Firstly, it's inconvenient to do at the top, and secondly, to replace the chandelier by unwinding the twist or dismantling the pads is much easier than cutting the soldering.

To connect the wires to each other, turn off the circuit breakers on the switchboard. Turn on and turn off the light in the room, and only after making sure that there is no electricity in the apartment, proceed to the works.

If you will use twisted wires to connect the wires, you should carefully wrap it with electrical tape.

When power is supplied by three wires, they will all be working, then it is optimal to use terminals. Connecting the same name wiring, you can hang a chandelier.

Now it's time to check the correctness of the electrical work and the reliability of the fasteners on the bar or hook. Turn on the electricity and switch related to the device being tested.

If there is light and there is no sparking, the installation of the wiring with your own hands is carried out correctly. Let's see how firmly we managed to hang the chandelier.

Try to easily shake it from side to side. The lack of backlash means that all fasteners are reliable. Check carefully the heavy chandelier.

We have examined how it is possible to hang a ceiling lamp on a conventional ceiling, now we will dwell on some subtleties of work with decorated ceiling surfaces.

Mounting on a suspended ceiling

To easily hang a lighting fixture on a suspended structure, it is necessary to do preliminary work even during the mounting phase of the frame.

For light and fragile ceiling design options, such as gypsum and suspended ceilings, it is necessary to provide a fastening system in which the weight of the luminaire would not press on the surface of the coating.

There are very light ceiling light fixtures, and, it would seem, a rather massive gypsum plasterboard sheet is able to bear their weight.

However, there may be situations where a load is applied to the chandelier( for example, replacing cartridges or washing bubbles).

The uneven weight can unscrew the bracket and damage the gypsum board.

Fastening on a tension ceiling

Separately we will consider how to hang a chandelier on a stretched ceiling. This kind of ceiling decor is very easy to damage, so special care is required.

It is important to take into account that the stretch ceiling can not be heated - the distance from the chandelier lamps to the ceiling should be 30-40 cm, it is better if the lamps are directed downwards.

Even during the installation of a stretch ceiling, it is necessary to provide for wooden fences, to which the luminaire will be attached in the future.

To bring the wiring outside, in the right place on the suspended ceiling, glue the decorative edge, make a hole in the canvas and take out the wires.

Otherwise - work yourself to hang a lamp on the tension ceiling, the same as the rest of the ceilings.

We examined how to properly install the ceiling lamp with your own hands.

Video:

The technical part of the installation - drill a hole, assemble fasteners, hang a lighting device - any person who owns a drill can do it.

The biggest difficulty lies in the electrical wiring. Appreciate whether you understand everything about working with electricity. If you have any questions, then study them carefully before starting the installation.
