How to make railings for stairs

Wooden railings for stairs

Selection of material

Various types of wood are used for making rails: spruce, fir, poplar, walnut, etc. But the most reliable products are from oak, ash or teak. Solid rocks allow you to create thin, but safe parts, and the railing of them have a light, elegant look.

Installation of stair railings

  1. At the end and beginning of the march, stands are installed. To check the chosen height, a cord is stretched between them and a trial lift and descent along the stairs are carried out. Curbstones are attached and checked for stability - their "reeling" is unacceptable.
  2. The bowstring( lower support) is fastened with screws to the ladder march and pedestals.
  3. Calculates the frequency of the balusters, and holes are drilled in the handrail for them.
  4. The end edges of the balusters are cut at an angle equal to the slope of the ladder. When fastening the pillars to the steps, their lower part is left straight.
  5. The balusters are installed using studs which are screwed into their base and inserted into the prepared hole in the ladder. They are tightened with nuts from the bottom of the structure. Another option for fixing is the use of spikes and notches in the string and handrails.
  6. The balusters are fixed and fixed.
  7. Prefabricated fences are cleaned of dust, all visible flaws on the surface are covered and varnished.

Fastening rails with nails is the easiest way to assemble them. But it is also the most unreliable, because after a short time the design becomes unstable. Special pins, spikes or screws, set on the adhesive composition, will ensure a more durable attachment of parts.

Metal railings for stairs

Material

Metal handrails are already available or ordered in the workshop - they are very difficult to manufacture on their own. These designs are made of a different material, which has its pros and cons.

  • Aluminum - has a low weight, affordable cost. The rails of this material are varied in shape and configuration, but not very strong.
  • Stainless steel - beautiful, durable and resistant to moisture. Has one drawback - high cost.

  • Painted pipes are reliable and affordable, but require regular renewal of the coating.
  • Nickel-plated pipes are beautiful and not very expensive, in comparison with "stainless steel", but are prone to corrosion.

Mounting of the

  1. handrail. On the steps of the staircase, where the balusters are installed, markings are made.
  2. In the marked places holes are drilled.
  3. The resulting dust is blown out by an industrial vacuum cleaner.
  4. Two-component adhesive is poured into the hole, and the studs are inserted.
  5. With a screw or welding, studs are attached to the studs. The level is controlled by their vertical position.
  6. A handrail is attached to the supports with bolts. Welding is rarely used because it requires certain skills.
  7. Welded seams are sanded and ground.

Forged handrails for stairs

Forged handrails are mounted by welding. Elements for them are sold in shops or workshops. But the best option is to order a railing from a blacksmith. According to the proposed drawing, the masters will forge a unique product that will be a unique decoration of the house.

Welding works on the installation of handrails do not require special professionalism - it is enough to have some small skills on them. But it is very important to carefully approach the finishing of the finished structure. With properly selected materials for priming and painting the handrails, they will last for many years without changing the appearance.
